This is why we didn't win the cup

Post by Orion »

I saw this list the other day on a Google site covering the 2019 AFCON. The only Nigerian you see on the list is now retired and hardly even featured in the AFCON. We have very average players at best. Too average or too obscure to be featured on this list. The people thinking we should be winning this cup every time we participate are deluded. Rohr used a bunch of average players to create arguably the 2nd best team in the competition (Senegal got an easier route to the final and based on their two games against Algeria, I believe we would have defeated them had we reached the final).

and why didn't Egypt / morocco/Cameroon/Senegal win then; very baseless stupid stance
make peaceful change impossible make violent change inevitable.

"It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is. If the--if he--if 'is' means is and never has been, that is not--that is one thing. If it means there is none, that was a completely true statement....Now, if someone had asked me on that day, are you having any kind of sexual relations with Ms. Lewinsky, that is, asked me a question in the present tense, I would have said no. And it would have been completely true."

We got bronze with what we currently have. Add two or three top-class players and the odds of winning the cup goes up.

Come on now. You know for the Madagascar game we already qualified and the players didn't seem like they were really into that game. It may even be related to the brief protest over money, who knows. But if you want to go down that route, Tunisia beat them 3-0 and we beat Tunisia.

Algeria was a better team than Nigeria. No arguments there and they had some top-class players better than anything we had to offer.

Their top-class player who is a Carpenter at City?

The loss has nothing to do with the pedigree fo the players. It didn't against Argentina neither did it matter against Algeria. Maceo, you do follow American Football... what is it that they say about "Prevent Defense"?

It's got nothing to do with average players but the mentality of the coach. do you think the SE would have beaten Bulgaria 3-0 (1994 WC), Spain 3-2 (1998 WC) or CIV (AFCON 2013), if Rohr was in charge?

Yet that carpenter was the difference maker for them... And yes I agree this isn't about pedigree of players, cause Mahrez aside... I couldn't point out any Algerian player who was any better in "pedigree" that our players... they were simply better coached, but MORE IMPORTANTLY had LEADERSHIP to call upon when they needed it. Mahrez on any given day is still a world class player... whom did we have as a counter balance factor to respond to the Algerians? Rohrs abysmal tactics aside, they(the Algerians) had leadership we didn't, we still needed a difference maker when they were picking us apart(and these would have made no difference if we were the better team or not), all we had were bunch of talented but naive players/rookies aimlessly huddling around with no clue on how to stem the tide(add a clueless coach to that equation and you have a team inevitably headed for a beating). Now a prime Mikel, Victor Moses, Emenike and even Enyeama would have stepped up and at least rallied the boys together... yiu definitely wouldn't have counted on Musa or Ighalo to have provided that type of gutsy leadership, they just aren't ideal fits for such task.

Bros, see how easy it is to sh1t on their top player who does play for the current EPL champions, esp given that we do NOT have a single player of that pedigree (NOT EVEN CLOSE). Last season he played 44 times for City scoring 12 goals and 12 assists (https://www.transfermarkt.com/riyad-mah ... ler/171424). So why try to diminish his pedigree simply to score some points in the argument against Rohr.

We get it, Rohr is not great, but that doesn't mean we would have necessarily won with a different coach as Algeria was the best team in the tournament hands down. The likes of Geudiora and Benecer dominated our so called 'best DM in the EPL thats so splendidly good that nobody wants to buy', so much so that this guy gave up the penultimate FK that sealed our fate.

We need to wake up, our players are NOT that good, yes with a better coach we could build on what we do have which is above average crop of players. However, we do not have a game changer in our team, so in close games we don't have someone like a JJ to turn to and decide it for us. We don't have a single WC player on our team, its not a shock that the two teams that played the final do...

In 2013 we had a WC keeper in our captain Enyeama, and the likes of Vic Mo, Emenike (that you hate so much), that could help decide a game for us and Mikel at the height of his game to steady us in the middle. We exuded class in every part of the field with Enyeama steadying the defense, Mikel holding together the midfield, and Vic Mo, Emenike, Ideye controlling the attack, then add the wild card of an Mba that knew how to play the African game and was unafraid to impose himself when necessary (unlike Iwobi's scurred arse).

This current team has no one willing to step up. Abi na fumbling Musa? Static Ighalo? Indecisive Iwobi and Etebo? Foul machines Etebo and Ndidi? Slow as nails Omeuro and Ekong? Vacationing Akpeyi? Look at the type of fumbling that the so called leaders of our team (3rd captain) like Omeruo can be making in a Semi Final game gifting the Algerian striker a one on one with our GK out of absolutely nothing (talk less of Ekong scoring an own goal). If that was Mahrez the game would have been decided since, we wouldn't even be focusing on one specific FK deciding the game. You can't blame Rohr for such bone-headedness.

That said I do believe he should go and we get a coach that better suits our style of play, but I'm also under no illusions on the type of players that we currently have or try to diminish our opponents to make myself feel better. Fact is we need just a little bit more class to scale to the next rung...

   KPOM, I want Rohr out as much as the next man, but we have to tell ourselves the gaddamn truth? Rohr is only a fraction of the whole, the man could be gone in the next minute and we then we all celebrate, while the bigger problem nags us silently... then a new coach comes in, wins a couple of games, gets all our hopes high... until a bad turn dampens all hopes again... then we start crying for the next world class coach to save our aSSes.

The cycle continues.

Africa as whole has a serious problem with talent. The best talents are playing for other countries ( countries of birth or where they grew up). This nations cup had Sallah , Mane and Mahrez as the main events. We had only 3 truly world class players in the entire tournament. Our best talent are all converted to defensive midfielders. Let's compare to nations cup of the 90's and 2000s. The Nigerian, Cameroun, Senegal , Morrocan, heck most teams possessed at least two players that were worth the admission fee. Hence more people turned up for the games.

The overall quality of competition has gone up hence any African team can beat the other on any given day but the quality of talent on display has been dissipated. Nigeria is no exception

Jette1, your question can be answered in several ways and so, ...
And the BIBLE says: The race is NOT for the swift, neither is the battle for the strong nor ... but time and chance makes them all.
Ecclesiastes 1:18: For in much wisdom is much grief and he that increases knowledge increases sorrow.

Rohr used a bunch of average players to create arguably the 2nd best team in the competition (Senegal got an easier route to the final and based on their two games against Algeria, I believe we would have defeated them had we reached the final).

Ghana has 5 players on that list, and even Kenya has 2....
so using CE logic, we should ask Okorocha to mould a statue for Rohr.

Africa doesn't even have world class football leagues so we are relying on our players to find their way abroad before we accept what ever talent they have,Nigeria for one will lazily cap anyone who plays abroad I.e Blessing Kaku (1 game for Bolton Wanderers) and currently John Ogu of Hapoel Be'er Sheva and Elderson Echijilie managed 59 caps and hasn't officially retired from international football.
Let's be honest if we are to wait for a player to go abroad just so they can be capped despite their inability to improve or consistently prove their quality we are really just clutching at straws.
The NFF receives government funding but doesn't even own its own academy we are not going anywhere with a meaningful plan everything seems to be like shooting and hoping on hitting the target blindfolded!
