When Nigeria was killing it in soccer nobody was worried about the commentary. Nigeria was praised all over the world for being skillful, pace, and intelligent. I agree. They have no respect for the fans of African teams that might be watching. I actually watch it on mute.deanotito wrote:Never thought I’d say this, but I find British commentators a lot more respectful than these American commentators. Any opportunity to get a dig in, they take.
Yes, it sure didn’t help that our girls couldn’t string 4 passes together, but I’ve been watching games a long time and listening to commentary. There is a code of conduct when talking about teams. Yes, they may not be as good as the opponents, but you’re supposed to be gracious and respectful.

Fox's "coverage" is absolutely abysmal. For every game involving Nigeria, they only ever used three words to describe the attributes of the Nigerian players: "speed", "power", and "pace". The stupidity of the commentary did not even dawn on them when 5'3 Ordega was Nigeria's most threatening player. She is not exactly a body builder is she?!
There is actually a Twitter thread here about an extraordinarily racist bit of commentary on FS1:

FOR THE AFRICAN MEN...
...their favorite words are "naïve" and "physical" (meaning rough and dirty).
As for the Dennerby comment, I was floored when I heard it, seeing as the culmination of a terrible practice Nigeria had adopted for decades. That is the practice of bringing in barely qualified foreign coaches and retaining even with superior working environment compared to indigenous coaches. The debate over foreign or indigenous raged on in this site for decades and, I'm sure in other places where Nigerians gather.
Among other reasons, those opposed to mindless employment of these foreign coaches warned that Nigeria cannot gain national or race respect if it continued to treat foreign coaches like royalty. Currently, there are threads in this forum calling the unconditional retention of Rohr, AFCON performance be damned. There was a similar call to retain Swedish (what's it with Nigerians and Swedes?) after the worst WC performance in Nigerian history under the thinly-disguised argument of continuity. Yet, better performing Nigerians are routinely treated with contempt. This Dennerby episode is a regrettable proof of what we've been preaching against.

Nothing will happen. There will be no preparation for the future and we will keep bringing teams that lump the ball forward, surrender possession and hope for the best. My grandma who casually watches football keep asking me “why are we giving the other team the ball?” Says it all for me.kzz5joa wrote:As sad and unfortunate as I find these stereotypes, I can't help but wonder why it does not trigger our Football administrators. Somehow, it always seems that those in charge of our football assume that our athleticism is enough to overwhelm the opposition.
I would love for these commentators to be respectful, but more than that, I wish for African Football administrators to wake up and give it all it takes. I mean, it's football, not rocket science.

Funny thing about Nigerian football is they come with the same attitude and mentality every 4 years and expect a different outcome, some in here have the same tired ready made excuse for failure, watch after the ladies world cup, the big nations start preparation for the next, straight back to the drawing board, meanwhile, our African brethren will open up the camp 2 months before the big competition starts and hope for the best with their white coaches!Mr. Piffington wrote:Nothing will happen. but then again, i always say, we cannot separate African football from the way the countries are run! the football is a reflection of society at large, all the negatives we complain about everyday about the way the government do things, watch the football, you will see everything!

That pretty much sums it up,"if you fail to prepare, prepare to fail" but they don't want to hear that so they do nothing and pray when they realise nothing comes without hard work!marko wrote:Funny thing about Nigerian football is they come with the same attitude and mentality every 4 years and expect a different outcome, some in here have the same tired ready made excuse for failure, watch after the ladies world cup, the big nations start preparation for the next, straight back to the drawing board, meanwhile, our African brethren will open up the camp 2 months before the big competition starts and hope for the best with their white coaches!Mr. Piffington wrote:Nothing will happen.
