Buhari has appointed Sunday Dare as the new Sports Minister

Why do people with little or no sports background at least based on their credentials, hold ministerial positions in sport based positions in Nigeria? A Lawyer or any other non-sport profession been involved in sports? seems like a square peg in a round hole situation to me...someone like Odegbami who has lived, played, and practiced the game would have seemed ideal... someone please explain cause it doesn't make sense to me.

We are so backwards in Nigeria that anyone that can do simple things such as ensuring logistics needed for competitions are taken care of, paying coaches and players on time, establishing simple grassroot development programs etc will be way better that previous holders of the office.

...at least this young man is guaranteed a retinue of body guards, police and soldiers with long guns, a line of official cars, for him and wife and countless children he may have living in Nigeria.
The day he visit his village everything go close down, like they say in naija, "fierce looking" mopol men standing around.

On a serious note, if Nigeria is a country where really one's expertise is deemed as important yardstick for appointment, Sunday Dare would have been given either the portfolio of information minister (in charge of government's PR and etal) or the portfolio of communication minister (for media regulation/telecommunication/broadcasting policies).

A few things the new sports minister should look into

1. Special grants to atleast the top 5 athletes of each sport. Grants given in partnership with the private sector
2. Build at least 2 more basketball courts. 18 k seater mega centers.

3. Focus more on non football. Don’t even publicly comment on the NFF. Slash government funding to football.
4. Improve preparations for major championships.

5. Grassroots development, sports science, nutrition and development of sports coaching.
