The Nigerian Television Authority, the nation’s public broadcaster, has acquired sublicensed rights to one English Premier League fixture per match week.
The deal was brokered by Integral Sponsorship and Experiential Marketing, a Nigerian sports marketing company, after the Infront agency sold the rights on. The deal covers the three-season cycle between 2019-20 and 2021-22.
NTA’s deal also includes the rights to broadcast Premier League-produced magazine programmes which will be aired on a weekly basis.
Jean-François Jeanne, managing director at Infront France, said: “Nigeria is a key market for the English Premier League. Together with Integral we hope to maximise its media exposure in the country and provide an opportunity for passionate Nigerian fans to follow the action on free-to-air TV.”
The deal mimics the agreements signed in South Africa by Infront with free-to-air broadcaster OpenView and with Ghanaian FTA broadcaster Max TV, though the latter only covers the 2019-20 season.
Infront acquired the Premier League’s free-to-air distribution rights in over sub-Saharan African countries for the 2019-2o to 2021-22 cycle, though it is expected that the agency faces a challenge to extract value over the lifespan of the contract due to the demise of Kwesé TV.
Infront is managing the sale of the rights through its newly-created Africa division based in Paris and the Premier League sales mandate follows on from the agency’s distribution of free-to-air rights in the region to the 2016 Olympic Games.
Pan-African pay-television broadcaster SuperSport holds the pay-television rights to the Premier League across Sub-Saharan Africa during the current cycle.

The Director General of the NTA, Alhaji Yakubu Ibn Mohammed stated that, “In terms of excitement, the Premier League is at a pedestal higher than that offered by any other league in the world. NTA is proud to partner with Integral to bring the excitement to the living rooms and viewing centres of Nigerians”

Those 'WE' who cannot afford cable TV can now watch their teams in the comfort of their homes. Meanwhile we (small w.e.) cannot watch our NPFL teams on telly. And people talk about growing our league, ok oo.

Yes but should NIGERIA Television Authority neglect the NIGERIAN league and focus only on the ENGLISH league? Is it impossible for them to get a negotiated deal with the LMC to show NPFL matches? EPL matches are available on cable TV in homes and viewing centres all over Nigeria. By showing one EPL game per week, NTA isn't going to add anything to the viewership of EPL in Nigeria and I wonder the commerciality of the deal for NTA. One game per week of the NPFL will however make a significant difference in the awareness, profile and viewership of the NPFL. NTA just has to lead the way in showing the local league.

Isn't that the point, though? If it isn't free, is that not the reason why the government that provides public money to NTA get the NTA to help the government in achieving its stated goals of youth and sports development? If the NTA is not doing so then they are basically getting then people's money for little in return (free money).
