NTA lands English Premier League rights in Nigeria

'WEism' in action.
The Nigerian Television Authority, the nation’s public broadcaster, has acquired sublicensed rights to one English Premier League fixture per match week.
The deal was brokered by Integral Sponsorship and Experiential Marketing, a Nigerian sports marketing company, after the Infront agency sold the rights on. The deal covers the three-season cycle between 2019-20 and 2021-22.
NTA’s deal also includes the rights to broadcast Premier League-produced magazine programmes which will be aired on a weekly basis.
Jean-François Jeanne, managing director at Infront France, said: “Nigeria is a key market for the English Premier League. Together with Integral we hope to maximise its media exposure in the country and provide an opportunity for passionate Nigerian fans to follow the action on free-to-air TV.”
The deal mimics the agreements signed in South Africa by Infront with free-to-air broadcaster OpenView and with Ghanaian FTA broadcaster Max TV, though the latter only covers the 2019-20 season.
Infront acquired the Premier League’s free-to-air distribution rights in over sub-Saharan African countries for the 2019-2o to 2021-22 cycle, though it is expected that the agency faces a challenge to extract value over the lifespan of the contract due to the demise of Kwesé TV.
Infront is managing the sale of the rights through its newly-created Africa division based in Paris and the Premier League sales mandate follows on from the agency’s distribution of free-to-air rights in the region to the 2016 Olympic Games.
Pan-African pay-television broadcaster SuperSport holds the pay-television rights to the Premier League across Sub-Saharan Africa during the current cycle.

The Director General of the NTA, Alhaji Yakubu Ibn Mohammed stated that, “In terms of excitement, the Premier League is at a pedestal higher than that offered by any other league in the world. NTA is proud to partner with Integral to bring the excitement to the living rooms and viewing centres of Nigerians”

Those 'WE' who cannot afford cable TV can now watch their teams in the comfort of their homes. Meanwhile we (small w.e.) cannot watch our NPFL teams on telly. And people talk about growing our league, ok oo.

The thread is about the NIGERIAN Television Authority .... and the seeming disregard for the NIGERIAN league by NIGERIAN broadcasters (even the publicly-funded one) and NIGERIAN fans.

Look, I've been campaigning for a Nigeria-focused Eagles Nest probably longer than anyone .... but let us not get pedantic.

This came out a few weeks or so ago and to state that I was hugely disappointed is a major understatement. Here is why?

1.The NTA receives public money. In essence, this is a government-owned station neglecting a league that is part of the development of Nigerian youths and instead focusing on covering a foreign league.

2. The NTA, along with several other state-owned television stations in Africa, recently secured the support of the AU to get a major discount to cover the AFCON on the basis that they are the only stations out there serving public interest in their own countries.

It is a most disappointing decision by the NTA. This isn't a private commercial station that can just cover anything that it wants to as long as it serves its commercial interest. Instead, this is a state-owned entity that has responsibility to serve public interest that includes developing youth and sports in Nigeria.

The NTA is also a commercial company that should be ran like a business. It is not a business that throws money away. It is up to the NPFl to make themselves more attractive. The sad reality is the EPL is more popular and will attract more viewership than the local league. Untill that changes, we can't criticize the NTA for making a sound business decision. They are not running a charity whether it is stated owned or not.

After saying that, a deal can be made with the NPFL with private sponsors. But the problem is the NPFL itself is not been ran like a real business. If it was they won't have started the season without TV coverage.

But that is the point, isn't it?

The VIPs in charge of improving Nigeria's healthcare .... get their healthcare in London. The VIPs in charge of improving Nigeria's club football, likewise, get their football needs fulfilled by watching the English League. Oh, and they all get their salaries and eventually their pensions paid in full, even if they leave office with all of the systemic dysfunctions more or less unchanged from what pertained when they took office. They don't even face pressure from the public, most of whom have been demotivated into apathy, but many of whom are dedicated supporters of the VIPs .... protecting them from criticism, and heaping upon them the sort of honorifics that should be reserved for people who actually fix the dysfunctions. If anyone ever actually gets around to fixing the dysfunctions ....

IN MY PROPOSED W. AFRICAN LEAGUE OR REFORMED DOMESTIC LEAGUE...

...professionally televised/broadcast matches will be a big part of the plan although it would be by subscription since the clubs would be fully private.

That would be a great idea but they just won’t listen to sense unless you pay them!

Nothing is free though. Even free television anywhere is not free. They rely on donations. Watching the AFCON and NPFL should never be free else expect those competitions to never develop. They should never be enjoyed for free cos they cost a lot of money to put up. I'd fully expect NTA to be a propaganda arm of whichever govt is paying. Just like they would show the league of whomever picks up the tab.

Yes but should NIGERIA Television Authority neglect the NIGERIAN league and focus only on the ENGLISH league? Is it impossible for them to get a negotiated deal with the LMC to show NPFL matches? EPL matches are available on cable TV in homes and viewing centres all over Nigeria. By showing one EPL game per week, NTA isn't going to add anything to the viewership of EPL in Nigeria and I wonder the commerciality of the deal for NTA. One game per week of the NPFL will however make a significant difference in the awareness, profile and viewership of the NPFL. NTA just has to lead the way in showing the local league.

Isn't that the point, though? If it isn't free, is that not the reason why the government that provides public money to NTA get the NTA to help the government in achieving its stated goals of youth and sports development? If the NTA is not doing so then they are basically getting then people's money for little in return (free money).

NTA should focus on the English league if that is their moneymaker and helps them to provide decent service. It is a development that should motivate the local league as they’re in a more advantageous position. They should look to strike a deal with NTA with their advantage of local advertising and merchandising. NTA will add to the viewership as they are more accessible to Nigerians than cable tv. I don’t think we should criticize NTA for doing what they need to do to keep the cameras on. They are tapping into the existing popularity of a popular item.

The national Canadian tv stations just stopped striking deals with euro leagues and left it to smaller private stations. They prefer to show the brand new Canadian premier league because they know they will get 3 to 5 thousand people out of their homes on match day. A bonanza for marketing, social engineering and advertising. They’re pitching their tent with the biggest companies that are showing up to put up billboards. Those companies are not by accident. The handlers of the CPL have succeeded in convincing some of the richest Canadians of a product that will bring 3 to 5 thousand people to their horse jumping play ground twice a week. Just happened in the last 2 yrs.

The govt money in NTA is for govt outreach and perhaps propaganda. If people want to watch AFCON or NPFL on govt tv, they should bring out their hard earned money and pay for it. It is not a brilliant idea to take other people’s goods and services and give them out for free.

The NTA secured thecrught to Televise EPL games, but ignored our NPL games - like many people already noted? Hmm, na wa-oo !
