Nigeria: Dare Writes NFF On Welfare Package for Ex - Super Eagles Players

Calabar — The Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has written to the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to come up with a welfare package that would take care of ex internationals who are either sick or injured.

In a letter dated May 11 and written by the Permanent Secretary, Gabriel Aduda to the NFF President Amaju Pinnick was directed to furnish the ministry with plans for welfare assistance to players.

"We acknowledge and appreciate the kind gesture of extending support to the families of our fallen heroes in following the lead of the ministry to pledge the monthly payment of N30, 000.

"I wish to further request you to provide information on the welfare package put in place by your management to enhance productivity and motivate staff and athletes of your federation, as well as welfare scheme for families of ex-internationals, the sick and injured athletes," Aduda stated in the letter.

The letter was written to ensure that the federation seek out modalities to ensure that players who had retired from the game are well taken care off following outcry over the poor welfare of most former players and their families.

It would be recalled that the minister had offered financial and material support to the mothers of late Rashidi Yekini, Samuel Okwaraji as well as Sunday Bada.

The minister also promised to pay them monthly allowance as well as offset their hospital bill any time they have health challenge.

And few days ago, the sports minister extended financial help to ailing former Super Eagles defender, Sunday Eboigbe.

These gestures have not gone unnoticed as a former Green Eagles goalkeeper, Eta Egbe recently commended the minister for showing unprecedented concern for the welfare of former internationals.

He said"We pray that he leaves a legacy that he will be long remembered for. We have never had it so good and we hope for the better.

"The spirit of giving is not easy to come by. When your father buys you bathroom slippers, there will be hope and assurances that tomorrow he will get you a sandal", Egbe said.

Good idea but the Honorable Minister should know that it should be a cooperative effort between the Ministry and the sports agencies.

This story should not be allowed to die.
Any player that has represented the nation at senior level should automatically be a beneficiary of this scheme.
It might be peanuts to the players whilst in their prime, but its not today we have seen ex football stars fall from glory into penury.

It happens all over the world.

Wrong move, if you ask me.

What the federal ministry should do is to make players contribute to a pension fund and not using public fund.

Why can't players BUY insurance? They can use some of their allowances/bonuses to buy such.

They should should join a pension scheme. Everyone should prepare for life after work.

@Akure4Life: I totally agree with you. It's a bad move.

My idea would be that the players, when called for national duties, should be covered as per insurance, just in case anything happens when on national duties. Beyond that, the players are and should be responsible for their life care after football, meaning they should have saved for either the raining or sunshine day. They should also be encouraged to take courses in financial management and not spending all their earnings on bling bling or women etc. and to AVOID bad friends and bad financial experts..
