Players who should be finished with SE

Post by vancity eagle »

Yes its time to clean house, especially with new incoming arrivals.

Should never be called again

1. Paul Onuachu - just not a fit into this team, and has had ample opportunities to stake a claim and failed miserably. Should just concentrate on club career

2. Ahmed Musa - innactive at club level, game has not improved, out of shape, far too many better and younger options in his position. Thank you for your service

3. Mikel Agu - just not it, would prefer to blood in younger players

4. Daniel Akpeyi - We have found a core of young Keepers, this guy was never it and should be left alone. We have 2 sets of qualifying groups to prosecute without any serious competition. This way the youngsters can be gradually bled into the setup without any baptism of fire.

Temporary banishment

1. Kelechi Iheanacho - until he takes his club career serious and gets into shape, he should be ignored for now as we look to test other options. He has been useless in GWG for quite some time.

Need to watch their backs

1. Chidozie Awaziem - with addition of new CB's and a resurgent Balogun his place is under threat, I dont see him getting calls unless there are injuries.

2. Kenneth Omeruo- see above regarding Awaziem

3. Jamilu Collins - with the resurgence of Ebuehi (can play LB) and Aina who can also play LB, with the discovery of natural LB Zaidu Sanusi, and Kingsley Ebihue about to be added to the fold, Collins who has consistently been the worst SE in almost every match he has played is heading towards irrelevance.

I'm inclined to agree with some of your picks for disengagement from the SE.

1. Regarding Paul Onuachu (and after watching the match a few times), I don't believe he maps well into the SE attack. He is quite a significant drop in skill levels and ability when compared to Osimhen. I saw some comments about him not getting service and not being provided crosses. There were at least 3 occasions where he could have tested the keeper when provided the opportunity and he failed. Truth is: he is just not it. He is a good club player but is not a good fit for the SE.

2. Over the past couple of games or so, Ahmed Musa has become one of the players that seriously needs to evaluate his usefulness to this team. He has been coming off the bench, which is a sign that he may not be the powerhouse he once was. I get the fact that he is captain and all, but perhaps its time for him to call it quits from the SE.

3. Mikel Agu was quite slow both on and off the ball during the Algeria game. I saw more energy from the Tijani kid than both Agu and Onyeka combined. I think I have an inclining into Rohr's fascination with Tijani and I expect to see more of him and less of the Agu and Onyeka going forward. Also, if and when Nwakali decides to step up his game, it would be even tougher for both Agu and Onyeka to make the squad. With Ndidi, Aribo, Etebo, and possibly Nwakali, Ovie Ejaria and Tijani (who Rohr seems to want to groom), I really don't see room for those two.

4. I would hesitate discarding Akpeyi immediately - not because I like him (I really don't), but because of the inherent danger of not having an experienced hand amongst the corps of GKs. With Uzoho, Okoye, Alampasu and likely Lawal as options, it is difficult to see how the likes of Akpeyi, Ezenwa and others fit into the SE corps of GKs as it is, especially in the long term. Will see how this unfolds for the November qualifiers.

5. I would also add Troost Ekong to the list of those to be re-examined. His performance against Algeria, in my opinion, was poor. I can see why he was discarded by Udinese - he seems to struggle with putting in a disciplined performance. Constantly hoofing the ball upfield to no one in particular at the slightest hint of pressure from the opposing attacker. Totally lacking in confidence. Balogun is miles better than him and a much more intelligent defender. With the likes of Akpoguma and possibly Torunariga coming on board, his days may be numbered.

The following are needed (as a matter of urgency).
1. Lookman Ademola - our current wingers (namely Chukwueze, Kalu and Simon) are FAR too predictable. We need intelligent wingers that don't dilly dally on the ball.
2. Ovie Ejaria - it will be nice to have someone else play the AM role and have Iwobi and Lookman play on the wings, feeding Osimhen. That to me might be utopia. Fingers crossed.
3. Jordan Torunariga / Felix Udokhai - Troost Ekong for me, is just not it. He hasn't developed over the past few years and we need to look elsewhere. I love Ajayi's versatility and Balogun has always been a class player. The likes of Awaziem and Omeruo have also been simply overtaken by other stronger players and may have lost their relevance to this team.

Ehibueze. Ejaria should be called up. I still think Iheanacho will come good. Rohr should advise him to change clubs. Need to also keep a close eye on Awoniyi and Sadiq.
Winners do it the right way.

We"re barely half way into a 2 game friendly schedule and people already want throw half the team away. What happens if Lookman and Ejaria don't play well in their first games? Do we throw them away and keep looking for new players? At some point you have to give these players enough time to show what they can do instead of destabilizing the team by constants changing the players.

Let's face it. Its not like those that haven't been called are world class players.

Awaziem is solid and versatile. He can play in Central Defence and at right back. He can even play in the DM position.

He had a stinker against Lesotho, but he has mostly been good for the SE. I think he would have done better in the middle against Algeria than Semi.

Mikel Agu has a lethargy to his game that borders on pride. Has some good touches, but absolutely no urgency.

Agree with all the other points.

Lookman is definitely needed in the team, stick Lookman in the attacking mid position and we're set.

Lookman needs to settle on a position if he's going to reach his massive potential. He seemsmto be a victim of his own abilities. Here's a video by Everton fans who have watched him several times and know him better than anybody here. These guys are die hard Everyon fans who follow the performance of every one of their players.

This - as you stated in above - is why I think you are a 'skillful' person. It seems you think very widely before playing with your Computer's, or Cell phone's keyboard. I read what many people wrote and I couldn't help but shook my head in disbelief.

They want to replace this and that player, then this and that. Wow, ok-ooo!

On the countrary, Lesotho was'nt the only game he had a stinker. He has had quite a few (including against South Africa).
I would implore you to watch the Algeria game again and focus on Semi. I thought he played brilliantly as makeshift DM.
The issue with Awaziem is his growth seems to have stagnated. That's why he has been a journey man for the past 3-4 seasons and cannot even seem to crack into the first team of Boavista.
I believe his days may be numbered with the new Centerbacks coming in to the squad.

Don't know whose advocating for Lookman to be an AM, when he clearly is a winger that can play on across the frontline.
Reading some of the comments, you can glean that his versatility wasn't necessarily the problem he had at Everton.
In a club, you may need to be a specialist at one position, but in a National team, you definitely need to have some versatility.
Lookman is a must have for the SE

Lukman is more likely to make a bigger impact as an AM for SE than as a winger. You don't get better by adding where you're already strong. We have enough wingers that we can get good productivity from the wing positions during a competitive game. What we don't have is an AM that can make the team's offense click better. Lookman as a SE winger is a low risk low reward proposition. At AM he's a low risk high reward proposition.

If Lukman does play AM the question will be whether or not we play 2 DMs behind him or we play 1 DM and a 2 way CM. Lukman will lose the ball in the middle of the park as he attempts to make plays. Do we focus the team on recovering the ball or imposing our our will. I prefer the later. Only Ejaria, Nwakali or Ejaria can do that.

kongi IMO from what I have seen Lookman is already better than every single one of our wingers. So he will not just be "an addition to a crowded field," He is the top of that field.

However seeing his abilities I wondered if he could not be deployed as an AM for a number of reasons.

His vision, passing range, and intelligence is better than pretty much all of our players. Plus he can dribble like crazy too, but I am very impressed with his decision making, and eye for key passes.

For me he is a sure starter, whether at AM or on either wing. SE will be better for it.

Slow down. Lookman has the potential to be better but let’s wait till we see him in the GWG. Remember we all said the same about Chukwueze who now seems to have lost most of his fans.

how is the point of this thread a separate category deserving its own thread heading
make peaceful change impossible make violent change inevitable.

"It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is. If the--if he--if 'is' means is and never has been, that is not--that is one thing. If it means there is none, that was a completely true statement....Now, if someone had asked me on that day, are you having any kind of sexual relations with Ms. Lewinsky, that is, asked me a question in the present tense, I would have said no. And it would have been completely true."

I agree Musa needs to be challenged. He must move back to Europe, playing in Saudi Arabia is not going to help him get better. It's a shame that at 27 years of age and being the team captain, he longer commands a starting spot. His predecessors like Kanu and Yobo were in their 30s when they lost their starter's position.
We need experience in the squad and I would have loved the bulk of the 2018 WC squad to be available for the 2022 WC squad but right now it's looking like only Uzoho, Ebuehi, Ndidi, Balogun, Etebo, Iwobi and Moses Simon ( who missed the WC due to injury) who would realistically make the squad. The jury is out on the likes of Awaziem, Musa, Iheanacho, Moses( if he comes back) and probably Ezenwa.
It's going to be difficult for the likes of Ekong and Omeruo going forward.

I’ll be disappointed to see Musa or Agu ever again in a Nigeria shirt. As for Paul Onuachu that is surely a head scratcher,I know he’s doing well at club level but apart from that goal against Egypt he just doesn’t add much his height doesn’t even help in the air.

I never praised Collins, he has always been poor defensively ever since his debut. He was simply an upgrade on his predecessor Idowu, but he has never had a decent match in my memory and has always been the weakest link.

In fact I was always stunned that Rohr would prefer him over Aina simply because he is naturally left footed.

I can remember how many goals he was directly responsible for us conceeding. The goal against Benin, the goal against Brazil.

Didn't add much in attack or defense. Aina is far superior to him at LB. Even Rohr eventually figured this out at times.

Ekong is a concern.
Like has been identified, he is def under threat.
He might have some extra rope being deputy captain (just like Musa has extra rope being captain) but that can only go so far.
If Adarabioyo and the other German boys come-a-calling, then Ekong's era might be over.
He played some bone-headed clearances vs Algeria last Friday and his body language suggested he knew it.

That makes way for the new Captain Ndidi, possibly with Iwobi as his deputy.

To be fair Troost has not played club football this season yet so it is understandable how rusty he is.

Before the match the other day I was on the verge of writing off Balogun, but we were all reminded of what he was capable of. It seems his move to Rangers was a great thing, as his lack of playing time seems to have effected him. Before the Algeria match I had him behind both Omeruo and Awaziem, but he has leaped past both of them. Only problem with Balogun is he is injury prone. I think in terms of current form for our CB's its as follows.

1. Akpobuma
2. Ajayi
3. Balogun
4. Troost
5. Omeruo
6. Awaziem

We are awaiting Adarabioyo, Torunariga, Udokhai
