AFCON and Covid??
To be clear I do not believe in any way or form is the reason Victor Osimhen has been ruled out. Covid quarantine is now 5 days and this competition stretches for a month. So covid is not a reason to drop someone. Yesterday, Ethiopia beat Sudan 3-0 in a test game without 3 players impacted by covid. Those players have not been dropped! The reason the squads were enlarged is specifically for these covid situations.
Nigeria likely will be affected, as will other teams, by covid absences and returns during this competition. Expect it.

Re: AFCON and Covid??
It will continue to be played when it suits Africa. The outrage over the Super League last year means that Europe cannot claim that money is the primary consideration.vancity eagle wrote: ↑Fri Dec 31, 2021 4:31 pm And people will continue to say afcon should be played in January.

In the UK, interventions by Vieira and Ian Wright have meant that Watford has been highly criticised for stopping Dennis from playing for his country over a technicality.
Africa has compromised several.times but the European teams have not moved an inch. The solution is to agree a harmonised calendar with mid season breaks for the AFCON when it needs to be played in January (in some countries the European summer is fine). The European Nations League took place mid season and the clubs did not complain. Why can't they agree a similar break for AFCON? Why must Africa always move?
As for the players, those that want to play will play. Zaha opted not to play qualifiers during FIFA breaks but is available for AFCON. You can see from Haller's response and Aubameyang liking Ian Wright's post that many top players will continue to show up for the AFCON.

But this is an issue of prevailing discussion for each of us. It is an ongoing battle. As a matter of fact, the recent withdrawals on account of "injuries": will be tested in the coming weeks and the discussions will continue even then.

Keep your heads in the sand. This problem will only get worse until afcon is rendered irrelevant. Which UEFA nations league was played during the season ? There are international breaks.
The last june afcon in Egypt, what exactly was the problem ?

That's your problem. You don't read. You just listen to European rubbish from their media outlets and you then dump it on CE. It smells by the way. Please utilize Google which will give you the reason.
Re: AFCON and Covid??
The Nations League final was played in October. Is that not during the season? The Nations League group stages and semis were played during the season as well.vancity eagle wrote: ↑Fri Dec 31, 2021 6:15 pm Keep your heads in the sand. And try to read. I mentioned in my post that a summer Nations Cup is fine in North and Southern Africa. Do we want to exclude countries like Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon from hosting it or force them to host at times where disruption is very unlikely due to weather?
Europe (add or remove a few weeks) has uniform seasons. Africa is much larger and the seasons are not uniform.

You should understand summer in Europe is, summer in Africa.

Guess what, we played games then as well and wasn't a problem.

Re: AFCON and Covid??
Playing one or two games and playing a tournament are different. That is why they play games in Europe in winter but not tournaments. And if FIFA can accommodate the international breaks, we are asking them to accommodate AFCON. If the Europeans stop acting as if Africa has to do all the movement, we can reach an acceptable accommodation. And that is where the public opinion following Vieira's and Wright's intervention is heading in the UK.vancity eagle wrote: ↑Fri Dec 31, 2021 6:49 pmYes during fifa international breaks.aruako1 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 31, 2021 6:25 pmThe Nations League final was played in October. It was particularly instructive to see the reactions to Wright's post with loads of support from black current and ex-playrrs in the UK and Europe. With people like Kluivert also chipping in.
The "we make the money" argument no longer makes sense after the Super League fiasco.
Re: AFCON and Covid??
well stated. It is a long fight but the resistance must continue and questions must continue to be asked. I am really elated by how CAF resisted an insisted on its tournament to go on inspite of the bluff by Europe.. it is particularly a happy moment for me.. I celebrated here. I hope more to come.. Re: AFCON and Covid??
The 5 day COVID quarantine is a CDC directive that only applies to Americans. I’m not sure what the FIFA guidelines are but I believe it is until the player tests negative.Enugu II wrote: ↑Fri Dec 31, 2021 4:26 pm To be clear I do not believe in any way or form is the reason Victor Osimhen has been ruled out.
Expect it.
The most important reason why Osimhen is not going to be at the AFCON is because he is not allowed to get into Italy having tested positive for COVID. He would have had to quarantine until he tests negative (estimated 10 days) then head to Italy to be cleared by Napoli medical staff then head back to Cameroon. A generous estimate is that he won’t be training with teammates until January 12 having just returned from a 2 month layoff. The decision to withdraw from the squad is very reasonable.

Correct. I also wonder what CAF uses. Hopefully, it is similar or even a shorter stay based on studies that they are using. Hopefully, someone with that info can share it. Presently, Ethiopia and Cameroon teams have reported covid illnesses.niyi wrote: ↑Sat Jan 01, 2022 12:35 amThe 5 day COVID quarantine is a CDC directive that only applies to Americans. South Africans will disagree.
On a more serious note. Football is a global sport, and local considerations mean that if you’re having a tournament in some countries, January may be more favourable to the competition than July.
It won’t hurt to formalise the global football calendar to have meaningful breaks in January as well as summer.
