Nigeria Football Federation to Decide on New Super Eagles Coach Today

Image

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will decide the new coach for the men’s senior national team, the Super Eagles on Thursday, April 18 in Abuja.

News Central reports that the Super Eagles have been without a substantive coach for almost two months since Jose Peseiro’s departure upon the expiration of his contract in February 2024.

Peseiro led the team to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Since then, there have been delays in the appointment of a new Coach.

The delays in the appointment process has raised concerns, especially as the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic is just six weeks away.

Image

Meanwhile, there is a growing consensus for the NFF to consider hiring a foreign coach with a proven track record to command respect and discipline among the Super Eagles players.

The NFF released the shortlist of those vying for the coaching job, which includes three foreign coaches.

Nigerian player and former Golden Eaglets coach, Emmanuel Amuneke made the shortlist as one of the final candidates.

Others include:

Michael Nsien (Nigerian-American), Danny Bujis (the Netherlands), Domnece Torrent (Spain), and Toni Conceicao (Portugal).

While the majority of the NFF technical committee members lean towards a foreign coach, the final decision rests with the NFF executive committee.

Look at the nobodies they want to coach SE. Truly, Nigerians do not control NFF. I am waiting for the announcement of their foreign coach. Follow the money. More money to be made with the hiring of a foreign coach. I hope they do it so that I can officially stop following SE.

Today in Abuja, the NFF technical committee will sit to finalise on the much-awaited appointment of a new coach for the Super Eagles.

The sub-committee was inaugurated in August 2023.

The committee’s recommendations will be deliberated on by the NFF executive committee headed by president Ibrahim Gusau before the appointment is announced.

SCORENigeria lists the committee members –

Chairman: Sharif Inuwa ‘Ahlan’ – The Kano FA Chairman is also on the executive committee of the NFF. The businessman is widely regarded as the closest ally of NFF president Gusau.

Vice Chairman: Felix Anyansi-Agwu – He is the NFF 1st Vice President and previously headed this same committee. He led Enyimba to their most successful run including two CAF Champions League and nine NPFL championships.

Aminu Kurfi ‘Balele’ – Katsina FA chairman and Federal House of Representatives member: He was previously chairman of NPFL club Katsina United. The businessman and politician is an influential Nigeria football stakeholder.

Victor Ikpeba – CAF African Footballer of the Year in 1997, who enjoyed a decorated playing career that included historic 1996 Olympic Gold and featured at 1994 and 1998 World Cups. One of the longest serving members of this committee. He is now a pundit with SuperSport TV.

Felix Owolabi – Former international who played a big role when Nigeria won a first-ever AFCON on home soil in 1980.

Olayinka Olagbemiro – Abuja academy owner, whose track record has included managerial stints at the famous Stationery Stores as well as TikiTaka Nigeria.

Zanna Mala – Former El Kanemi Warriors chairman and a close ally of the NFF president.

Augustine Eguavoen – He is the committee secretary and the NFF technical director. Former Super Eagles captain, who has gone on to handle the national team several times.

They are not nobodies. Those of us that want more local coaches should refrain from insulting foreign coaches. They only try to fo the job they are hired for. If you must get angry, get angry with the NFF. But we must wish for the success of the team whichever coach is chosen

I would be shocked if they give the job to Amunike. They have already made their mind up about a foreign coach. I must say none of the names on the list inspires me. My money would be on the Dutch coach. He is perfect for what the NFF want.

If I were making the decision. I would have hired Finidi George in February. Would surround him with a strong backroom staff that will handle video analysis, scouting, set piece, and etc.

3 names have been recommended to the board but its top secret. Looks like Amunike is putting up a heck of a fight for the job.

https://scorenigeria.com.ng/exclusive-3 ... er-eagles/

SCORENigeria can exclusively report that the search for a new Super Eagles coach will soon come to an end after the NFF technical committee today recommended three coaches for the consideration of the executive committee.

This followed several hours of deliberation by the eight-man technical committee in Abuja today.
