I would have benched Okocha, Kanu - Westerhof
CLEMENS Westerhof has stated that Austin Okocha and Kanu Nwankwo should not have been fielded in Nigeria's opening match against Morocco.

Westerhof, in a telephone conversation with Tribunesports from South Africa, said that both players should have been left on the bench, moreso that they were yet to adapt to the weather after coming late to camp from Europe. The former Eagles technical adviser said further that if he were to be in charge of the Eagles team, he would not have used both players in the match.

Assessing some of the players, the self-styled Dutchgerian said that most of them played far below expectation. "Isaac Okoronkwo was too slow in the heart of the defence, he just was not himself," Westerhof noted. "As for Yakubu Aiyegbeni, he was very slow for the role he was given to play by the coaches."

He, however, was of the opinion that if all these lapses were corrected, the Eagles would once again fly high. "But the bottomline is Chukwu needs somebody who will guide him and I do not see anybody of that calibre in the Nigerian setup for now.

"Nigerians believe in prayers in solving immediate problems and I suggest they do just that. Who knows, God might just answer their prayers," Westerhof noted.

Uses out dated [retarded] tactics - Onigbinde

Onigbinde faults Eagles tactics
FORMER Super Eagles coach, Chief Adegboye Onigbinde, has blamed Nigeria's toss to Morocco on bad tactics adopted by the national coach, Mr. Christian Chukwu.

Onigbinde told our correspondent that the Eagles handier did not use modern technique for the match. He said he was surprised that only one person was on each of the wings for the Eagles.

"Babayaro was all alone on the left and those in the attack were not supporting the midfielders.

"I felt bad as a Nigerian because we blew away the match we ought to have won," he said.

Onigbinde said the entire team lacked cohesion and the fighting spirit of an African team was not there.

The former Eagles coach spoke in Sousse shortly before the Egyptians played Algeria at the Stade Olympique.

He said, "The Eagles simply refused to contest keenly for the ball, the fact is that Morocco deserved the victory that day.

"The few chances that came the way of Nigeria were also wasted because there was no team work."

The Shooting Stars' General Manager wondered why Isaac Okoronkwo was fielded in the match despite not playing competitive football for close to one year.

Onigbinde however said the Eagles still had a good chance of bouncing back if they approach the remaining two matches seriously.

In as much as I doubt the veracity of this story, I must admit that I had expected CCC to bench Kanu, especially since he didn't even make it to the training camp.
