The Gambia Football Assiciation has sacked coach Sang Ndong
Gambia national team coach Sang Ndong has been sacked.
A terse press release issued by the Gambian Football Association (GFA) said Ndong, who is also the technical director of Gambian football, has been relieved of his duties.
Though the GFA gave no further details the move comes in the wake of massive disenchantment following the Scorpions' departure from the 2006 African Nations and World Cup qualifiers.
Gambia lost 3-0 to Liberia in Monrovia, crashing out of the combined 2006 qualifiers.
That was after the Scorpions had raised fan expectations by beating Liberia 2-0 in the first leg.
The GFA responded to the elimination by setting up a committee to probe into the poor showing of the team.
The GFA is yet to disclose the committee's findings, but reports suggest it recommended the dismissal of the coach and the entire technical staff.
Other reports however suggested that following the elimination of the Scorpions from the qualifiers, Sang Ndong has offered to resign but was urged to stay on until the committee concluded its findings.
Ndong has been technical director since December 2001.
He has also been national team coach on several occasions in the last 10 years.
