Enyimba Eyes Another Big Win
World Club Tourney
By Tunde Sulaiman
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Following the charge by the Confederation of African Football President Alhaji Issa Hayatou for CAF League champions Enyimba not to let the continent down at the World Club Championship, the Peoples' Elephant is to head for Ivory Coast to shape up for the competition.
This was disclosed by the club's chief mentor Abia State Governor Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, who said the team would be heading to Sol Beni in Abidjan early next month in order to prepare adequately for the FIFA organised event in which the winner stands to smile home with $6 million.
"I've said all a long that football is big business. We will definitely not spend up to the prize money at stake to prepare the team. So if they do well it is good business if at the end of the day we become $6 million richer," he explained.
According to the governor, whose massive support for the club enabled Nigeria end its almost four decade African jinx, said the trip to the sports complex owned by ASEC Mimosas would also afford both the players and management of the club see first hand how professional football is run, added that the month-long training stint would also prepare Enyimba for the Super Cup clash with Cup Winners Cup holders Etoile du Sahel, which comes up in Aba on February 21.
"We usually camp the players before the start of every season but this time around we've decided to take them out of the country because they are not only preparing for the league but bigger challenges in both Africa and beyond. They thus need to be prepared in the best possible way so that they do not let the continent down in the FIFA event."
Dr. Kalu said he was determined that Enyimba would not only retain the local league for the third consecutive time but will also make history by retaining their CAF League title and doing well in the World Club Championship.
The team is scheduled to leave for Abidjan before the 12th of next month and will return second week in February because of this the reception originally planned to take place on the 12 has been postponed to when they return.
According to Mr Victor Onochie, the governor's special assistant on media, the CAF League victory celebration will now come up around the time of the Super Cup.
"The governor is toying with the idea of holding it around the time of the Super Cup because that time all the soccer bigwigs will be in Aba, including CAF President Hayatou so it will be like killing two birds with one stone."
He also confirmed that 23 KIA saloon cars and two jeeps are already parked at the Government House (Umuahia) and would be handed over to the players and officials during the reception

Organising Committee for the FIFA Club World Championship 2005
By Dr Viacheslav Koloskov
Chairman of the Organising Committee for the FIFA Club World Championship
On 7 March 2003 in Zurich, the FIFA Executive Committee reaffirmed its decision of 8 March 2002 to stage the next FIFA Club World Championship in 2005. I was delighted by this decision, because I am convinced that not only FIFA, but the confederations, national associations, clubs, coaches and players all want this competition to happen. A FIFA Club World Championship has its place in a well-organised international football calendar.
What can be more fascinating for clubs than to measure themselves against sides from other Confederations? So far it has only happened once, at the inaugural FIFA Club World Championship in January 2000 in Brazil, and that event was a resounding success. So much so that the 2001 tournament was all-set to take place in Spain, when FIFA was unfortunately forced to cancel the tournament after the bankruptcy of the Federation's long-standing partner ISL.
I believe the future prospects for the FIFA Club World Championship are excellent. Through discussions and surveys, FIFA has established a clear and high demand for a competition of this kind. I am not surprised - the FIFA Club World Championship is the only chance outside the FIFA World Cup to see top African and European, South American and Asian stars compete against each other. The FIFA Club World Championship is a new highlight in an already spectacular game.

WORLD CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
Fifa has unveiled plans to hold the World Club Championship in 2005 in North America, Central America or the Caribbean. The tournament is the brainchild of Fifa president Sepp Blatter who recently called for a reduction in the number of games players were required to play. The championship will be a biennial FIFA event and it is proposed that Asia host the competition in 2007. The proposed competition will be a 16-team format, with a qualification structure to be disclosed in the future.

FIFA Club World Championship ? Organising Committee puts the ball in play
Under the chairmanship of Dr. Viacheslav Koloskov (RUS) and subject to ratification by the FIFA Executive Committee, the Organising Committee for the FIFA Club World Championship today proposed that the next championship be played in one of the associations from the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) on 17-31 July 2005, dates that are protected within the Coordinated International Match Calendar. Furthermore, the committee also confirmed the championship as a biennial FIFA event and proposed that Asia host the competition in 2007.
In terms of the framework for the championship, the committee proposed a 16-team format, with a qualification structure to be disclosed in the future.
The FIFA Executive Committee?s March 2002 decision to organise a world championship for clubs as from 2005 was unanimously confirmed by the FIFA family with the ratification of the revised FIFA Statutes at the Extraordinary Congress in Doha (Qatar) on 19 October 2003. Fulfilling FIFA?s commitment to the football family, the FIFA Club World Championship will provide clubs from all confederations with the opportunity to become Club World Champion.
?It?s a question of solidarity,? said the FIFA President, who also attended the meeting. ?The key is to have worldwide representation within a compelling format that is attractive not just to the clubs and fans, but to the entire football family. I am pleased to say that today?s meeting set us on exactly the right course.?
