Newcastle chairman criticises "management and players''

Post by 27 »

Newcastle captain Alan Shearer has backed club chairman Freddie Shepherd following his scathing attack on the players and manager.
Shepherd blamed everyone "from the manager downwards" after Newcastle won just once in December.

"He can say what he wants, can't he? He's the gaffer of the place and he's as frustrated as we are," said Shearer.

"Particularly, the last two performances haven't been acceptable."

Newcastle followed up draws against Charlton and Leicester with a home defeat to Blackburn on Sunday.

"We'd done well to get ourselves back into contention after a dreadful start, but the last two have been poor and we're as frustrated as (Shepherd) is," added Shearer.

Newcastle manager Sir Bobby Robson agreed with his captain.

"He's the chairman of the football club and has the right to say what he feels," Robson said of Shepherd.

"I'm not cribbing about it, but we're all frustrated as well and nobody is more frustrated than the players and myself."

A furious Shepherd laid into the players on Tuesday.

"The management and players of this football club are given Rolls-Royce treatment, but we are not getting Rolls-Royce performances from them in return," he said.

"The board has given the club some of the best players in the country and those players top wages, a fantastic stadium and a training complex that is second to none in Europe.

"It is about time the board got something back in return and they started performing on the pitch."

Shearer has admitted he needs help to steer his side back on course for the Champions League.

The Magpies are four points adrift of fourth-placed Charlton after Sunday's 1-0 home defeat to Blackburn.

Injuries to Craig Bellamy and Shola Ameobi have left manager Sir Bobby Robson looking to recruit a possible new strike partner for Shearer.

"Over the last two or three games, we have not been as creative as we can be," Shearer added. "But performances in our last two games have been unacceptable.

"We have had a poor time of it over Christmas and two points from nine is just not good enough.

"Our last two results - at Leicester and against Blackburn - have not been good enough."

I wonder what Tottenham's owners would say.
