Athens 2004 Olympic Qualifier
U-23 players leave for Dakar tomorrow

By Dipo Okubanjo

THE National Under-23 Soccer Team will tomorrow depart Abidjan for Dakar where they are expected to take on their Senegalese counterparts in a fresh round of qualifiers for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

Nigeria and Senegal are joint leaders, with four points apiece from two rounds of matches, in one of the groups of the African qualifying zone.

The coach Musa Abdulahi-tutored Nigerian squad has had to shift their training base to Sol Beni, Abidjan, in the aftermath of their less than convincing performance in the game with Tunisia in Bauchi which ended 1-1.

The encounter with Senegal is scheduled to hold on Sunday, 48 hours after Egypt would have clashed with Tunisia in the groups other fixture.

The Guardian gathered that 24 players are now at the camp in Sol Beni with Abdulahi calling the shots.

Enyimba of Aba's Chief Coach Khadiri Ikhana was said to have arrived the Under-23 camp and his assignment, according to sources, is to accompany the team to Dakar and watch the match in an observer capacity. But he has been mandated by the NFA to assist the technical crew if need be.

It was also revealed that the football house is contemplating raising match winning bonus for the players from the present $500 each, as part of motivational incentives.
