U-23 Olympic Qualifier: Enyimba called to the Rescue

Enyimba as dream team

HUMPHREY NJOKU - champion sports

FOLLOWING last Saturday’s Nigeria’s U-23 (Dream Team III) lack lustre and floopy start against their Tunisian counterparts in the Athens 2004 Olympics qualifier at the Tafawa Balewa Stadium, Bauchi, opinions are favourably keen towards drafting in Africa’s newest football kings – Enyimba, for a salvage mission.

After the unimpressive 1-1 draw against the north African side, fears have been heightened on the capacity of the coach Musa Abdullahi tutored lads to book Athens 2004 Olympics ticket for the country.

Views held were on the side of ensuring that Nigeria’s presence at the quadrennial sports fiesta were not subjected to gamble. It was felt that the U-23’s Athens 2004 duel against Tunisian young lads did not give much hope that the crop of players in Abdullahi’s enclave could seal Nigeria’s safe berth at the multiple sports event, where Nigeria’s Dream Team I once won the soccer medal at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic games.

It was against this back drop that the eligible Peoples Elephant are been touted to be fully co-opted into the U-23 as a surest way of guaranteeing a ticket for the nation.

This school of thought is not contented with the large presence of Enyimba players in the coach Abdullahi’s fold, like Dele Aiyenugba, Isa Abdullahi, Obinna Nwaneri, Omolade Ajibade, Yusuf Mohammed, Okemiri Ogbonnaya, Onyekachi Okonkwo, Michael Ochei, Chukwudi Nworgu, David Tyavkase, Uche Kalu, etc. They would want a situation whereby the entire team are drafted into the team, if possible, with their technical crew, essentially to strengthen Abdullahi’s bench.

Although, they agreed that the coach may have had some difficulties raising a full strong team against Tunsia youth side, given the football house hammer on four of his players, accused of making outrageous monetary demands before the tournament said of the 8th All Africa Games, Abuja 2003. The players involved are team captain and Germany based Adebowale Ogungbure, Swiss based Alfred Umuejeraye and Germany duo of Emmanuel Izuagha and Felix Ogbuke.

It is still held against the silver winning coach that his team’s collapsed before the Camerounian team at the final of the men’s football event of Abuja 2003 weighed heavily against entrusting the Athens 2004 ship solely on the hands of the present crops of players.

The Aba war lords have proven to be a dependable side. They have been consistent on the home front as well as at the continental level. It is contended that their CAF Champions League successful network and structure are still intact and could be cashed in on to deliver Nigeria against any unsavouring situation in their quest for a place in Athens 2004.

The Dream Team III next Group A match would be against Senegal in Dakar followed by two successive home matches against Senegal and Egypt before they meet Tunisia in March.

The time to act is now so as to avoid a situation whereby we will be groaning at the eleventh hour for qualification. It may be late.
