Diouf gets three-game ban

Post by manplus »

Senegal striker El Hadji Diouf has been suspended for three international matches following his side's stormy quarter-final defeat to Tunisia at the Cup of Nations.
The ban is one of several strong sanctions imposed by the Confederation of African football after two of the weekend's quarter-finals turned to violence.

Diouf, who became involved in a verbal battle with officials and opposing players during the match with Tunisia, was accused of violent conduct.

The ban means that the Liverpool forward will miss Senegal's first three qualifying matches for the 2006 World Cup.

BBC Sport has also learnt that three Senegal officials are to receive one-year bans for their part in the skirmishes which took place after Tunisia took a one-goal lead in Saturday's match.

The technical staff, who invaded the pitch to protest the Tunisian goal, were banned from the dug-out for one year for all Caf matches.

The three are Amara Traore, Abdoulaye Sarr and Fallou Cisse.

Caf also fined the Tunisia Football Association $500 after striker Zaid Jaziri was found to have verbally abused the match co-ordinator.

Heavy fines are also expected to be imposed on the Algerian FA after fans rioted in the stands following their quarter-final loss to Morocco.

A large number of fans ripped seats from the stadium and fired flares on to the pitch.

The Caf organising committee has recommended that the Algerian FA be fined $6,000 for the incident and be forced to underwrite the cost of repairing the stadium in Sfax.

A final decision on that punishment is expected to be made on Thursday.
