Obasanjo sticks to indigenous coach for Eagles
From Mathias Okwe, Abuja
TO douse the agitation of a section of Nigerian sports community for the engagement of a foreign technical adviser for the Super Eagles, President Olusegun Obasanjo has directed the Minister of Sports, Col, Musa Mohammed (rtd), to allow local coaches to handle the team.

He gave the directive at a reception in honour of the Super Eagles contingent to the just-concluded 24th Edition of the African Nations Cup hosted by Tunisia.

Apparently satisfied with the Christian Chukwu-led technical crew of the team, which guided the Super Eagles to defeat the Indomitable Lions of Cameroun at their quarter final match of the tournament, President Obasanjo expressed confidence in our local coaches, saying that they possessed the skills and charisma to lead our national teams to any level of soccer competition.

His words: "Those of you who are looking for a foreign coach, na your toro. We don't need them. All we need to do is to expose these local ones. Mr. Minister of Sports please, take note," Obasanjo directed.

Mohammed and the Chairman of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima, had earlier said that the technical crew and the Super Eagles team to the Nations Cup would not be disbanded, but that they would be kept together because they were a team "of the future".

The president at the reception also explained that although the Eagles did not lift the trophy, the defeat of Cameroun by Nigeria was worth celebrating.

He said: "We are celebrating success, we are celebrating the fact that we were beaten but not defeated. I have listened to some comments before and during the tournament that our Super Eagles are no longer 'super'. But I believe that is their opinion and perception which they are entitled to. Because I believe and rightly too that our Eagles are still super," Obasanjo insisted.

Earlier, leader of the delegation to the tournament Col. Mohammed, who reeled the many feats recorded by the team, individually and as a team, described the performance at Tunisia 2004 as highly commendable, especially by finishing third with a depleted team occasioned by the suspension of three key members of the team and others who were injured
