As Kanu counts days @ Highbury: Where next?
As Kanu counts days @ Highbury: Where next?

WITH the roll in of the new year, one thing occupying the minds of most international players, is the transfer window which has just been flung open.
And of course, at the mention of transfer, one man likely to be uncomfortable is Nigerian international and Arsenal striker Nwankwo Kanu.
The gangling striker whose contract with the Gunners expires May this year, is not in a hurry to leave Highbury even if he gets an eye-popping offer.
"I am comfortable here and not in anyway in a hurry to leave" he had said. Luckily for the former Inter Milan striker, manager Arsene Wenger has hinted that he may be allowed to continue his romance with Arsenal atleast till the end of the first quarter of the season.
"Kanu is playing well at the moment and can still be here next year (this year). His future will be decided in April or May," he said in Arsenal fans’ news recently.
This green card from Wenger however does not translate into regular inclusion in the team as he has often been left on the bench for most of the matches involving Arsenal. This has been described as a source of worry. His two times strike in the Carling Cup recently, was impressive and may have forced Wenger to make a U-turn on impulse, declaring his intension to hold on to the striker.
From all indications, however Arsenal will eventually revisit the possibility of off-loading the former Pepsi Academy wiz kid, if not now certainly in the nearest future.
The big question is what is likely to be the effect of this never say-leave London stand to Kanu’s career?
Most players who get mouth watering transfers, often bag that on current form and not past exploits.
Will Kanu’s bench-warming role, his enjoying his stay in Highbury not withstanding put him in the kind of form that would be considered good enough to attract really reputable clubs?
Wouldn’t it be better for the Abia born striker to leave his doors open and perhaps grab something that will keep him more regularly on the pitch than having a buffet with Wenger with little soccer action.
It is a good thing, that Kanu will be on duty for the Super Eagles in Tunisia. Expectedly, hunters would come from far and wide, and it would be out of place to rule out the possibility of a few offers coming Kanu’s way.
If for the same reason of wanting to remain in London Papillo turns them down, it will mean that he may have like compatriot Celestine Babayaro, resolved to sink or swim with Arsenal, whether on the pitch or the bench.
And if that happens, it may be another way of announcing an early retirement from the game of his love.

Next stop for Kanu: Qatar
