Tunisia 2004: Adidas Boosts Eagles Victory Carrot

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

German sports wear company Adidas is set to inspire the Super Eagles at this month's Nations Cup finals by dangling a mouth watering winning bonus at the team.

Adidas, which only recently took over from American rival Nike as the official kit suppliers of the Nigerian national football teams, is ready to splash $250,000 on the Eagles should they triumph at the end of the competition on February 14.

THISDAYSports exclusively learnt that as a sign of faith in the Eagles, the German company has agreed to review upward by 25 percent the performance bonus agreed upon for the Nations Cup.

"After concluding the main negotiations with the company we then asked them to consider an upwards review of the performance bonus agreed for the Nations Cup, which they magnanimously agreed to do by 25 percent," explained the source who was part of the contract negotiating team.

According to the official despite the recent spat of negative criticisms trailing the deal, the contract with Adidas was the best possible of those available to the Nigeria Football Association (NFA).

He said although Adidas did not offer any signing on fee, unlike the other company did, the deal with the German firm was still better because in the long run Nigeria would benefit more from Adidas.

"People believe the $100,000 given by Adidas is smaller than the $350,000 offered by Hummel, but the truth is that the money given by Adidas is like a grant to help us kick start our Nations Cup build up. The money is just a sign of the good intentions they have for Nigerian football. They never offered any signing on fee and after listening to their plans we saw reason with them. Anyway why take big money now and small money later?" he rationed.

According to the contract signed with the Adidas, the German firm will use the first two years of the six entered into, to assess the deal and then would be ready to sit down to thrash out a contract for the remaining four years which will be very favourable to both parties.

It is hoped that by then the profile of the Eagles would have increased thereby given them a better platform from which to negotiate from.

Before the FA landed the two interested companies Eagles dwindling profile had kept away many potential firms which felt that it would not pay them to endorse them.

We reliably learnt that the German company agreed to supply kits to the tune of $2 million any year that the national teams would be engaged in many competitions.

"This year we have the Nations Cup and Olympic Games and so Adidas will give us items worth $2 million. Of course in the years that we don't have too many engagements the amount would drop," explained the official, who also wonder why the sudden furore over the contract when all the parties in question went through it with a fine tooth comb.

"In line with the present government's concern for due process all the necessary checks were conducted from the Sports Ministry right up to the Presidency and nothing was found untoward. Like I said earlier it was clearly the best deal available to us," the source insisted.

Meanwhile, Adidas has already begun keeping to its side of the contract by supplying training kits to the Faro camp of the Eagles in Portugal.
Remember the three Rs: Respect for your self; Respect for others; Responsibility for all your actions.

They keep saying that. The only thing they don't say is "how"?
