NAIROBI, Jan 5 (Reuters) - Kenya's participation in the African Nations Cup finals in Tunisia later this month is uncertain due to a lack of funds, Kenyan soccer chiefs said on Monday.
The head of the national team's management board Mohammed Nyaoga said he had been forced to cancel plans to have the players train at a camp in Egypt due to lack of finance.
"The team lacks money to purchase air tickets to Tunisia and unless the government steps in they will not travel to Tunisia," he said at a news conference.
"We need about 15 million Kenya shillings ($196,300) to send the team to Tunisia," he said adding that the board, which is overseeing the national team's preparations, has only 1.5 million shillings in its bank account.
The finals, won two years ago by Cameroon, take place from January 24 to February 14. Kenya are in Group B with Burkina Faso, Mali and Senegal.
The team are still scheduled to travel to Libya between January 12 and 19 because the Libyan government has already agreed to pay for the air tickets and meet their entire expenses.
But after Libya, Kenya lacks adequate funds to take care of the team, Nyaoga said.
Nyaoga said the problem had hampered the board's efforts to prepare the team properly and complained that the government had so far failed to step in and help.
"When we met the president on Saturday, we thought he would commit some money to the team to help in preparations but that was not the case," Nyaoga said.
The national team, known as the Harambee Stars, met President Mwai Kibaki on Saturday, who handed them the national flag and wished them well in the tournament.
There was no immediate comment from government officials who said the minister for sports Najib Balala was out of the country.
Many Kenyans say they do not hold much hope for the national team after they performed poorly at a regional soccer championship in Sudan last month.
Prolonged infighting in the national football federation, which has led to two parallel national leagues, has also adversely affected the sport in Kenya but national coach Jacob Mulee said the team would give their best despite the problems.
"We will try hard and concentrate on our preparations but it is demoralising to hear such news," he said.
