Norwich fans chanted racial abuse, say Everton
Paul MacInnes at Goodison Park
Monday January 5, 2004
The Guardian
Claims that Norwich City supporters racially abused the Everton defender Joseph Yobo left a shadow over this fixture which may yet result in FA action.
A small number of travelling fans were brought to the attention of Everton's safety officer Norman Whibley when chants of "You black *kindperson*" were reported by home supporters after a challenge by Yobo on Gary Holt for which the Nigerian was booked.
"These supporters bring nothing but disgrace and discredit upon themselves and their club," said Whibley. "This is something we do not accept at Goodison Park. We have done a lot here to eradicate this and I will be reporting the matter back to Norwich City's safety officer."
No official complaint is possible before reports from the safety officer and referee are submitted to the FA tomorrow. Unless it is shown that the chants were made by a large number of fans the FA is un likely to take action against the First Division leaders. But City's chairman Roger Munby was quick to respond to the claims.
"It is a problem we don't have and I'm absolutely astounded if that is the allegation," he said. "I'll be the first to look at any reports that come through and will examine them with all seriousness. It is totally unbecoming of our fans and our true supporters."
It would be a shame if the issue obscured any memory of a vibrant Cup tie to which a travelling support of 5,800 contributed in no small part despite another unfortunate chant, "We shoot burglars".

Yobo is cleverer enough to ignore the chants. If I understand him well (admittedly from the little press etc. i don't know him personally) as a character, racist chants probably make him play better....
Anyway, unfortunately this thing will probably never cease. To many ignorant people in the world.

The easiest way of defeating racism is by showing that you are immune to it. These fools soon get fed up of their insults when they don't have any effect. In fact, somewhat contrary to common belief, I think that people almost give it too much importance. In a way, the same way people argue for the legalisation of soft drugs.
I don't want to be misunderstood here, but the "cheap thrill" of calling someone a black *kindperson* is I think directly proportional to racism being a modern societal "taboo". Whether it should be forcefully meted out or perhaps left to die a natural death is something which no one can clearly determine but most times I tend to favour the latter as the easier and quicker way of eradicating racist chants at stadiums.

Paveman,
I beg to differ. If a guy can call a person a Black *kindperson* at football he can say the same thing to a Black guy at school or in a pub or at work. Not all Black people have the ability to deal with such degrading talk. Footballers should not accept it!!!

Don't get me wrong. Sometimes, one has no option but to walk away. You certainly want to take the high road in most of these instances, or nip it in the bud if you can see it coming. However, unlike Larry's claim that it is water off a duck's back in Yobo's case, it is in fact very disturbing to be subject to racial abuse. In other words, no one is immune to racism; you might no necessarily always express your feelings about it, but it does shake to the core.
