Presidency holds on to Nations Cup funds

BUDGET delay, a prime factor contributory to the unhealthy relationship between players and officials at the last Nations Cup in Mali, might rare its ugly head once again as the Federal Government continues to delay the release of funds for preparations and participation of the Super Eagles at the 2004 edition of the biennial competition.

Sources confided in The Guardian that the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), had since been waiting on the presidency for a directive to the finance ministry to release money meant for the Nations Cup campaign.

It will be recalled that the soccer authorities had late 2003 forwarded budget proposal on the Nations Cup to the Ministry of Sports, with the Sports Minister, Col. Musa Muhammed (rtd) having to appear before the National Assembly for a defence of the budget.

Secretary-General of the NFA, Taiwo Ogunjobi, it was learnt, had made several attempts at getting the funds released through the office of the sports minister who was expected to facilitate its release.

Ogunjobi was said to have recently visited the Presidential Villa in Abuja, ostensibly to further persuade the authorities on the need to make funds available on time before the tournament.

Only two years ago in Mali, prominent members of the then National Team engaged sports ministry officials in a face-off following an alleged delay in the payment of their camp allowances and match bonuses.

The situation almost got out of hand when the Sunday Oliseh-led squad threatened not to honour the semi-final clash with Senegal, unless their demands were met.

The NFA Task Force Committee on the Nations Cup had said Super Eagles campaign at the event will cost the country $6 million (N900 million), bulk of which is expected to come from the Federal Government.

Because it has been like that from day one and it will remain like that until NFA removes itself from the Govt...
