Chukwu’s team Players’ list emerges on January 14

Simon Ekpe and Obafemi Obadare

The final list of the 22 players who will represent Nigeria in the 24th Nations Cup finals starting on Jan 24 in Tunisia will be released on January 14, the Nigerian coach, Mr. Christian Chukwu, said on Wednesday in Faro, Portugal.

But the Nigerian contingent is expected to arrive Tunisia a day after naming the team and nine clear days before the commencement date of the competition.

Speaking in Lagos on Wednesday, the Nigeria Football Association boss, Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima, said the Miinister of Sports, Alhaji Musa Mohammed, would lead the team to Tunisia.

According to the chairman who is expected to be in Faro on January 12, the minister will join the camp on January 14.

Chukwu said the list would be released on Jan 14 to accommodate the Confederation of African Football deadline of 10 days to the commencement date of the championship.

Chukwu told reporters after the team's morning training session on Wednesday at their Ria Garden Hotel football pitch that all was well with the team.

"The players here have achieved a great level of fitness," said Chukwu, who was also part of Nigeria's technical crew when the Eagles won the Cup 10 years ago in Tunisia.

"What we are trying to achieve is to make sure that blending will be easy because of the players who are not yet here. But we know that they are playing regularly so fitness will not be their problem."

There was anxiety in the camp on Tuesday night when a wire report claimed that Chukwu had named his team.

The NFA scribe, Chief Taiwo Ogunjobi, even called from Nigeria after the news but he was assured by Assistant Secretary, Mr. Bola Oyeyode, that there was nothing of the sort.

It was learnt from the camp here that there was a force working against the success of Nigeria in Tunisia.

An official who did not want to be mentioned told reporters that the problem arose over the kitting contract Adidas won from Nigeria.

He said the companies that lost out were doing everything to create discord in Nigeria's camp.

Chukwu was not bothered by the distraction as he cracked jokes after the report was mentioned to him.
