Raheem Sterling gets England nod

Roy Hodgson has given a spot to 19-year-old Raheem Sterling in England's starting lineup against Italy.

Raheem Sterling will start for England behind striker Daniel Sturridge, while Wayne Rooney plays wide against Italy on Saturday, according to reports from Manaus.

Rooney is set to play on the right, as Roy Hodgson prefers a Liverpool partnership in the centre.

The 19-year-old Sterling missed England's final warm-up match after being dismissed for a wild tackle against Ecuador. He did not start any of England's warm-up matches for the World Cup.

Hodgson chose Sterling and Danny Welbeck over Adam Lallana, while Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson also start.

The back line of Glen Johnson, Tim Cahill, Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines will protect Joe Hart in goal.

Italy will be without goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, who injured his ankle in training.

I dont like this 4-2-3-1 of hodgson.
My boy Wellbeck is not a winger and rooney should not be playing so deep.
Also gerrard and Henderson need someone to play the coutinho role in front of them. Someone like Wilshere or Barkley not rooney
That being said Italy will hear wen tonight

I hope this is a football match and not a chess match. I say it'll end in a draw.

The Italian back line will be in a lot of trouble today. Not sure why they are going with this formation but their right side only have about 3caps between themselves. Sturridge will have a field day. This game has 1-1 or 2-1 written over it. I'd give the edge to England. Rooney

Watching the build up: Gerrard saying the best thing about the squad is that any of the subs could make the first eleven... :glare:

I wonder how big of a factor the heat will play. The ball hasnt even been kicked yet and the players are already sweating. It's currently 32 degrees celsius there plus humidity

My two most hated teams. For the sake of EPL, I'll root for England but I'm sure this is going to be a goalless borefest.

I have my concerns about this English team springing a surprise against Italy.

We need Balloteli to come through.

Italy always pure class.
