Rodri is ready to make an instant impact and Sterling, Sane and De Bruyne are sharp enough to start the season - but Angelino has a dreadful evening: THINGS WE LEARNED FROM MANCHESTER CITY 4-1 WEST HAM

City striker Lukas Nmecha put City into the lead before half-time during Wednesday's game
They might be missing a number of South American stars and Riyad Mahrez, but Manchester City always seem to have enough quality at their disposal to score at will.

Pep Guardiola’s side put four past West Ham in the Premier League Asia Trophy via David Silva, youngster Lukas Nmecha and a Raheem Sterling double after Mark Noble’s early penalty.

It marked a perfect start to pre-season, with Guardiola having very few worries going into a second title defence. Here, Jack Gaughan takes a look at some of the hot topics to come out of City's 4-1 win.
MORE LOCAL KIDS

City supporters were heartened to see the inclusion of academy products Tommy Doyle and Taylor Harwood-Bellis in Guardiola’s starting XI and neither disappointed. Both are fans of the club and there is a drive to afford local talented youngsters more opportunities.

Central midfielder Doyle – whose grandfathers Mike Doyle and Glyn Pardoe are City legends – was particularly dangerous from set pieces, with one early corner almost converted by Harwood-Bellis.

Harwood-Bellis, still only 17, was up against Michail Antonio and then Javier Hernandez. The central defender of the old-school variety stood up to the challenge.

Pep Guardiola has opened the door for Leroy Sane, 23, to quit Manchester City - by telling the £100m-rated German winger he can leave if he is unhappy. (Mirror)
But Sane want to stay in London not go back to Bayern. So will he become Arsenal or Spurs player since Chelsea cant sign any player?

Benjamin Mendy is likely to miss at least the first month of next season as new signing Angelino promised he is not just making up the numbers at Manchester City.

Mendy had an arthroscopy in May and is completing rehabilitation with Dr Ramon Cugat in Barcelona, with City not expecting him back training until mid-August.

Pep Guardiola will carefully manage the £52million signing, who has suffered constant knee injuries since his move two years ago. Mendy has started just 14 Premier League games for the club.

You can't afford a £100m rated player with a £40m war chest.

Calm your temperature.

PEP revealed some of Manchester City’s samba stars are returning to training early next week.

Brazilian trio Ederson, Gabriel Jesus and Fernandinho won the Copa America on July 7, while Nicolas Otamendi and Sergio Aguero finished third.

All five were offered a month off but Guardiola has been told a number are planning to start work at the City Football Academy next Monday ahead of the new season.

‘They decide whether to come back after three or four weeks off,’ Guardiola said in Hong Kong. ‘I don't want them to come back if they are not fit, if they are tired and have still not recovered from a tough season.

‘Some of them will come on the 29th or 30th, others come on August 3 or 4. It means a lot, I like it.’

The Catalan has left that decision down to his players, echoing Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp’s view that the football schedule is ‘killing’ footballers.
Riyad Mahrez is set to link back up with the squad later after lifting the Africa Cup of Nations with Algeria last weekend.

‘We cannot forget we are starting the season and Mahrez hasn't finished the previous one,’ Guardiola added.

‘It's a crazy schedule and we'll kill our players sooner or later, we cannot sustain it for a long time.

‘They have to breathe, rest, give more quality in the tournaments. They have to rest, but if the people want to come back a little bit earlier, they are more than welcome.

‘They know they want to come back - the standard has risen every season. And if they want to play they have to be fit.’

If he leaves, big if, it’ll only be to Bayern.

Citi team is large enough to ensure they don't get burned out easily during the season.

True but I don't know why the story coming from that he wants to come to London and I know Chelsea is the team that can pay that crazy price tag in all London club.

Manchester City will be seeking to retain the Community Shield when they face Liverpool at Wembley on Sunday, and Leroy Sane was present as Pep Guardiola's squad travelled to London for the game.

Sane has been heavily linked with a move to Bayern Munich ahead of next week's transfer deadline, but the winger could play some part against Liverpool.

Manchester City transfer analysis:

Rodri will prove to be an important addition and Pep Guardiola has strengthened at full back ... but will they cope without Vincent Kompany?
Best signing
City wasted no time in securing the services of a midfielder capable of being a long-term replacement for veteran Fernandinho.

City signed Rodri from Atletico Madrid in a £63million five-year deal which made the 23-year-old the club's most expensive signing.

Kevin De Bruyne praised Rodri following City's Community Shield victory over Liverpool last weekend, he said: 'I think he's the perfect DM for the way we want to play. Our DM is a really difficult position. You need certain players for it and there's not a lot of people who can do both sides of it.

'I think the way he's performed in pre-season and in training has been phenomenal. To be the new guy and still be on this level is a good sign.'

Fernandinho is a key cog in Guardiola's formidable machine but he suffered from various injuries last season.

Rodri impressed in front of the back four at the Wanda Metropolitano last campaign and looks to be a pivotal signing who will strengthen City's midfield.
Departures
The two notable players City allowed to leave during the summer transfer window were Vincent Kompany and Fabian Delph.

Captain Kompany was an instrumental figure at the heart of the defence during his 11 years at the club.

At 33 Kompany rejoined Anderlecht as player-manager this summer to kick start the next chapter of his career.

The centre back's recent seasons were hindered by injuries but he scored the screamer against Leicester to help City lift the Premier League trophy.

It will be his leadership both on and off the pitch that will be missed.
Prospects for the new season
Finding another option in defensive midfield was a necessity to lessen the strain on 34-year-old Fernandinho.

City have also strengthened in the full back area with the additions of Angelino from PSV Eindhoven and Joao Cancelo from Juventus.

The pair will provide alternative options to the likes of Kyle Walker, Benjamin Mendy and Oleksandr Zinchenko.

City have not signed a new centre half to replace Kompany but as a whole have more strength in depth to compete on all four fronts.
Odd men out
Defender Eliaquim Mangala was told he could leave the club for free this summer but remains on City's books at present.

Mangala, who may still depart as the European transfer window remains open until September 2, will see game-time limited if he stays at the Etihad.

Leroy Sane was heavily linked with a switch to Bayern Munich during this window.

But on transfer deadline day City confirmed the Germany international suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury last weekend and will be out for a long period, which wrecked any possibility of a move going ahead this summer.
Overall
How do you improve a squad that has won back-to-back Premier League titles? Guardiola has managed to do that this summer by bringing in players to add to his already-strong group.

Rodri will prove to be an important addition and City now have plenty of cover at full back.

One area that might become problematic if injuries are sustained is at centre back following the departure of Kompany.

It’s almost got lost in the transfer window mayhem that Joao Cancelo is now the most expensive full back in history at €65m (£60m). He’s being unveiled shortly by City. £194m expenditure from City on full backs now in two years #mcfc

That report is funny. It reported that City paid £60 million for Cancelo but failed to mention how much they got for Danilo.

Not really.

Cash flowed in only one direction- City to Juve; Danilo's fee having being taken out of Cancelo's valuation.

So on right back alone, City have spent over 100mp in last 2yrs+

Manchester City have completed the £60 million signing of Portugal right back, Joao Cancelo, from Juventus.

Cancelo, 25, has signed a six-year contract with the Premier League champions until June 2025.

The move sees the Brazil right back, Danilo, leave in the opposite direction to Juventus in a £34.2m deal. Danilo has signed a five-year deal with the Turin giants. Cancelo’s arrival takes City’s outlay on full-backs to £194m in two years. He becomes the club's third summer signing after Spain midfielder Rodri and left back Angelino and takes their gross spending to over £128m.
