England's football authorities will delay the start of the 2020-21 season until the last ball has been kicked in the 2019-20 campaign, with sources telling ESPN that this year's Premier League and EFL seasons will "absolutely finish before the next one begins."

So who will play in the CL and EL? These people are putting money and football before the lives of players and fans.

Why cannot they just play the remaining games in the summer behind closed doors with no fans? Or use the summer months to play the remaining games (since there will be no Euros).

You play the games and they win the league, fans are going to come out and celebrate. Canceling the season is the best option at this point.

They should just give Liverpool FC the title and end the season.

They haven't won it yet, also how do you allocate league positions which determine Champions League placements and relegation.

There are contracts and loans that end June 30th, how do you reconcile with that?

The contracts and loan will expire on june 30th and has no effects on finishing epl. if clubs want to continue with players services they can extend that player contract for a few months or allow the player to return back to his parent club. For example, Ighalo signed a contract until June 2020 and there are talks of United extending his loans or signing him permanently. either way, a player contract has no effect on EPL. There are lots of TV deals, millions of $ involved for the season not to be over.

Seems like FIFA are determined for leagues to finish their seasons.

remember that I told you that for big leagues like EPL, this season must finished before next can resume even if it ends at September. Fifa is already proposing loan extensions like I alluded earlier in the thread

Not sure why the club reversed its position, even with all the outrage. This is first and foremost a business. Its a business that contributes to the tax dollars from which the govt funds its activities, including payment of furloughed workers...

Here in the US, there are Fortune 500 companies receiving govt stimulus funds...

But that's the key - this isn't the US. A very rich club piggybacking on a govt scheme to furlough workers isn't a good look when govt money can be used elsewhere at a time of crisis was never going to be a winning move. The reverse was inevitable.

The money is so businesses do not have no make the choice to layoff employees, why are they different?

Govt would have forked out 80% of the wage bill for the furloughed staff. Liverpool can afford to take the financial hit.

I think this overlooks the fact that the clubs are not making any money, which is what the govt money is designed for, to keep the economy going until a return to a semblance of normalcy. Pretty sure there are Fortune 500 companies in England using this facility.
