Semifinals
Uganda 4-2 Congo

Uganda U20 Men’s National Football Team defied odds to storm the final of this year’s African Games after overcoming Congo in the semifinal on Tuesday at Accra Sports Stadium.

In a game of two halves, Congo led 2-0 at halftime but Uganda staged a comeback to win 4-2.

A sloppy start for Uganda Hippos saw them make several mistakes and Congo punished them by scoring.

In the 15th minute, defender Ronald Madoi chose to foul Sarr Samba at the edge of the box rather than containing him.

The resultant free kick was well taken by right back Servyl Akouala whose ferocious strike at the near post beat goalkeeper Shamulan Kamya.

Akouala nearly doubled the lead for Congo two minutes later from another free kick but Kamya parried the ball away.

The goalkeeper fell awkwardly and never returned to his feet. He was eventually rushed to hospital in an ambulance. :scared:

Abdu Magada who missed the last two games due to injury, was on bench and replaced Kamya in goal.

With a goal, Congo gained momentum and forced Uganda into making several mistakes. In the third minute of added time for the first half, they doubled their lead.

Mignon Koto dribbled past defender Madoi and fired the ball beyond onrushing goalkeeper Magada.

Uganda returned a different side in the second half and put Congo to the sword to stage a comeback.

The first goal for Uganda came at the hour mark with Abasi Kyeyune finishing off a team move to ignite hopes of a comeback.

Ten minutes later, striker Buno Bunyaga fired Uganda into the lead with his feeble low drive going beyond goalkeeper at the near post.

In the 73rd minute, Bunyaga scored his second of the day, heading from the far post thanks to Kyeyune’s pin point cross.

Mutebi put the icing on the cake with the four goal in the 81st minute to complete the comeback.

Uganda, like most other African 'minnows' of yester years, are improving. Meanwhile
former kings of football Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria are sitting on their laurels.
I'm enjoying the competition, even when some herein believe past achievements are
enough to continue having them on top.
Congrats to Uganda.

Thanks Joao.
There are a lot things wrong with the Ugandan FUFA but they have done some things right. They consulted other African FAs they could, and built a foundation focused on the basics, coaching, youth, e.t.c. For example, all the top UG league clubs are required to have U17 sides with a seperate league. These boys are mostly a product of that U17 league.

Most impressive part is the coaching crew. The last time this coach Morley Byekwaso Ochama handled the U20 team, was in 2021 AFCON where they were finalists, losing to ….. Ghana. So it’s revenge time! :)

Unfortunately, FIFA cancelled the U20 tournament they had qualified for because of COVID.
We are all wondering what happened to the players of that team. Only a handful made it to the senior Cranes team.

The FC coaches handling the senior team were not the best placed to handle the task of integrating the youngsters into the senior team. These LCs could have done a better job.

So we hope FUFA learned their lesson(s), and this set of players will be ready by the E. African 2027 AFCON

Nigerians have a knack of pulling a rabbit out of the hat when all looks bleak. So I never discount them.
Someday, I will tell the real history of this game in Africa because there are way too many myths.
