Liverpool, European Champions 2005.

We watched this very boring video, 500 times, of Sacchi doing defensive drills, using sticks and without the ball, with Maldini, Baresi and Albertini. We used to think before then that if the other players are better, you have to lose. After that we learned anything is possible – you can beat better teams by using tactics." Jurgen Klopp

I'll say the real problem is Kovacic in the defensive phase.

Not sure of his positioning.
Not understanding where the spaces are or the movements
It was Emerson that should have closed down kevin

KDB's space is the zone behind the LCM and between the LB and LCB.

Clearly Kocavic's responsibility...

I see your point but Emerson should’ve known that Marhez prefers his left foot and show him the sideline. That was a no brainer. Also, Azpilcueta picked ahead of James was a bad decision by Lampard. Against city he needs FBs with ability to attack spaces in the offensive phase especially given they have defensive frailties.

The big problem here is not Aspi who has thus far shut down Sterling. Lampard has opted for one attacking FB and I can understand that.

The issue is the haphazard organization when the ball turns over. And City are now simply laying traps for that...

Not sure why Mount was benched for this game. I expect Batshuayi to be introduced sooner rather than later. James for Emerson.

Chelsea lost this game in the 1st half by wasting too many chances. Btw, I like the upfront high pressing game by City. It has been really effective in keeping Chelsea unsettled!

Tough loss but this CFC team is a work in progress. Given how sloppy the team played against the quality of City, we got what we deserved. Back to the drawing board but there are enough positives to build on from this game in light of the result there last season.

I thought the game was deceptively close, even while recognizing the early successes in attack in the 1hf.

City comfortably waited for Chelsea's errors, esp when Gundo came on....

Chelsea's lack of proper organization in the defensive phase will continue to haunt it.

Plus I wonder the wisdom of playing out from the back against this level of opposition with the likes of Zouma, Tomori and Aspi...
