CAF rethinking AFCON Summer Schedule.....

Post by Enugu II »

As most of you may have known already, CAF is thinking of moving the 2021 AFCON back to the January/February schedule instead of the summer. CAF officially cited the rainy season in Cameroon. But that is strange considering that CAF was believed to have completed a study/research which pointed to summer as a better schedule. Although several of us thought that the move was simply to pacify Europe.

Well, that point of pacification may be in the works, again.

As you may know, the FIFA proposed Club World Cup (CWC) is to take place every four years in the summer starting 2021. That means it will affect the AFCON of 2021 and 2025. Guess who is the poor cousin, once again? CAF and its AFCON. Talk about respect or is it disrespect? CAF will now seek to move the AFCON permanently back to January/February or simply move the the AFCON on affected years. Shocking but true. After all, if CAF insists it will keep its summer schedule then the European clubs involved in the CWC will not release key players for the AFCON (Was this not what we were told will be solved by moving the AFCON to the summer?). Amazing developments indeed.

If this does not demonstrate how CAF and Africa is marginalized or how CAF has marginalized itself then what else will demonstrate that very fact? Meanwhile, let's continue the ####licking of Europe.
The difficulties of statistical thinking describes a puzzling limitation of our mind: our excessive confidence in what we believe we know, and our apparent inability to acknowledge the full extent of our ignorance and the uncertainty of the world we live in. I blame Hayatou and the likes of Amodu.

FIFA is overreaching itself with club matters. The expanded CWC is not sustainable in the long term.

European clubs are boycotting the expanded club world cup which is seen as a money grab.

I think CAF should stick with the summer schedule, I also think the way forward may be a Nations League format like UEFA and CONCACAF have.

CAF should not have moved the ANC in the first place, just to pacify European clubs. Now FIFA is proposing timing a tournament in direct competition with what is meant to be CAF's flagship championship. No respect, but I suppose we should respect ourselves first, eh? I would prefer it to be put back to January/February.

Stop complaining about marginalization and work towards building your leagues. When you have a product that pulls in money then you can afford to say to hell with anything else. Until then the big boys will rule.

Unfortunately, you are correct when we have wimps in leadership. CAF has the numbers which provide it with a political bargaining tool but it can only be used when those who have it realize that they do have it. Only then will they complain and reap rewards like their predecessors reaped --- more World Cup places, more money for development, etc. Those were achieved via complaining and not sitting back and wallowing in misery as you appear to advocate.

European clubs are already complaining as mentioned by a post above because they know that making complaints yield results. In the end they will participate in the CWC but only after FIFA has yielded to some of their demands. Yet, you want Africa not to complain but to bow down and yield. Great idea!
