Arsenal will lose out if they end up facing Barcelona in a transfer battle for Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey, claims Nigel Winterburn.

The Ghana international has been a long-standing target for those at Emirates Stadium.

He told Bookmakers.co.uk: “I’m always a little bit worried when the likes of Barcelona are also interested in your target – even when they’re in disarray – because they’re a huge club and you don’t want to be fighting them for a player, because most clubs would lose out in that situation.

“Arsenal need to look at those areas and Thomas Partey has been linked with a host of clubs, including Arsenal. If Barcelona’s interest is genuine, then I think it’s going to be very difficult for Arsenal to sign him.”

Atletico Madrid enforcer linked to Liverpool

Digging down into Atletico Madrid enforcer’s link to Liverpool

Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey is interesting Liverpool, according to reports.

Spanish outlet Cadena Sar published a report over the weekend claiming the powerful midfielder was a summer target for Premier League clubs.

They claim Partey is available for £43m this summer – due to his release clause which Atletico have been desperate to remove. The source claim the LaLiga club have been looking to get Partey to sign a new contract, so they can significantly raise his buy-out.

Partey though remains under terms of the deal he signed in March 2018, which expires in June 2023.

It’s worth noting that the article claims two Premier League teams are leading the chase, but the piece claims: “Our source has not yet authorized us to say that two clubs are.”

The Liverpool Echo though report “both the Reds and Manchester United are both interested in activating his release clause” and cite reports in Spain.

The 26-year-old certainly impressed against Liverpool in the Champions League last month, and his versatility could make him a desirable option for Jurgen Klopp.

The Ghana international can play as a deeper holding midfielder, a central defender or at right-back, but whether Klopp’s interest is real is debatable.

'Pay the money!' - Arsenal fans make Partey transfer demand
Arsenal fans have sent a clear message to the Gunners' board over Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey after his performance against Liverpool in the Champions League.

The Ghanaian international put in an impressive display at Anfield, making numerous challenges, blocks and interceptions as he helped his team-mates frustrate the Premier League leaders on Merseyside.

Arsenal are reportedly willing to pay Thomas Partey’s release clause of €50 million.

The Ghanian international has done well for Atletico Madrid this season, amassing three goals and an assist in 33 appearances across all competitions.

According to Madrid newspaper Libertad Digital, Arsenal are willing to pay Partey’s release clause of €50 million. This report also states that the 26-year-old and his representatives are in negotiations with Atleti regarding a new deal.

Partey has been a key player for Los Rojiblancos for a while now, making 172 appearances for them across all competitions with 15 goals and 12 assists to his name.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta would be looking to strengthen his squad in the summer and the Ghanian midfielder could be a suitable addition to their squad and there’s a good chance he could be a regular for them. However, Atleti may not be too willing to let go of him given how he has been doing for them in the past couple of seasons.

ManU make contact with Thomas Partey

Manchester United are reportedly taking steps already for their summer transfer targets as they take aim at Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Partey.

The talented midfielder has been linked with a transfer to Old Trafford in the past and rumours have now heated up once more.

With Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic’s futures uncertain, United may have to target replacements rather than adding to their existing quality.

The sensational Frenchman is believed to be eyeing a move away in his search for silverware while the experienced Serbian is just hoping for a team who will play him week in, week out.

Partey would be the perfect addition to the Red Devils midfield, adding steel to an otherwise rather soft centre.

Scott McTominay and Fred have proven to be good ball-winners but the latter has recently admitted a preference for being more box to box.

Partey would add expertise in the defensive midfield position that is otherwise a little lacking, particularly against top teams.

His release clause is arguably lower than his actual value and so United should take advantage of it and trigger it as soon as possible.

There’s always the chance Partey is using the Red Devils in a bid to renew his contract but the hope is that the move is actually on.

'Pay the money!' - Arsenal fans make Thomas Partey transfer demand after Liverpool masterclass

Atletico came into the game with a 1-0 advantage from the first leg in Spain, but Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum levelled the tie on aggregate with a header in the first half.

But Atletico impressed again defensively, withstanding considerable pressure from the hosts as the tie went to extra time at Anfield.

Why Man Utd Shouldn't Hesitate to Sign Thomas Partey This Summer

If your club needed any more reason to pursue Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey in the summer, have a brief skim over the Ghanaian's showing at Anfield on Wednesday night. Treat yourself.

In short, it was a special performance.

During one of Liverpool's finest displays of the season - in which they sustained attacks superbly to suffocate a resolute Atleti backline - Thomas remained as cool as ever against a midfield that looked a little more dynamic than usual.

Playing as part of a central midfield two in Diego Simeone's 4-4-2, which looked more like a 5-5-0 by the end of the night, Thomas shone defensively throughout. So often he was there to collect the all-important second ball in the first half - registering 12 recoveries in total - before coolly distributing to an Atleti defender. His impressive ability in one-on-one situations was also on full display - finishing the game with a joint-high five tackles.

His knack for anticipating his opponent's actions on the pitch proved pivotal as well as he ended the 120-minute contest with the second-most interceptions (four). While the Reds were able to sustain relentless pressure on Los Rojiblancos for much of the game, the 26-year-old's ability to sniff out danger on occasions provided his side with much needed physical and mental breaks. He screened the back four expertly.

The Atleti man is no old school defensive midfielder, mind; he defines the modern-day iteration of the position.

The game situation ensured that Thomas could only show glimpses of his talent in possession - Joao Felix's 79.2% pass completion led all Atleti starters, highlighting what Simeone and co. were trying to achieve. Nevertheless, in those flashes, we saw what a talented footballer this man is; using his long legs and frame to resist a fierce Liverpool press while occasionally penetrating the Reds' backline with cute one-touch passes in behind for the likes of Felix and Angel Correa.

Messi wants Atletico Madrid’s star player

Lionel Messi and the Barcelona board consider signing Atletico Madrid’s star player after his incredible performance against Liverpool.

Thomas Partey was exceptional as he secured a 7.9 rating and recovered the ball numerous times for Atletico and barely ever lost the ball. The African international was the brain and the workhorse for his team against Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Ever since Rodri left Madrid to join Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, Thomas Partey has become a crucial figure under Diego Pablo Simeone. Atletico Madrid plans to improve the Ghana international’s contract and raise his 50 million euros release clause to a better figure as many teams have shown interest in signing the player.

Don Balon claims that Barcelona is the favorites to sign the player as they have advanced their negotiations with Thomas and his agent. The Blaugrana hope to fill in the gap of Arturo Vidal who may leave next season by bringing in Partey and to reduce the cost, they will offer Ivan Rakitic as well.

Should Barca sign Thomas Partey and let Ivan Rakitic go in the exchange?
