AFCON dream ends in tears for South Africa after Sudan loss
Bafana Bafana have sensationally failed to qualify for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be held in Cameroon early next year.
All Molefi Ntseki’s men needed to do was avoid defeat against Sudan in their final AFCON match in order to qualify, but lost 2-0 to the North African nation in Khartoum on Sunday, 28 March.
Sudan, who are ranked a lowly 127th in the FIFA rankings and 34th in Africa, opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a header from Saifeldin Bakhit.
By contrast, South Africa are the 71st-ranked team in the world and 13th in Africa.
Bafana Bafana were then caught on a counter-attack in the 32nd minute as Mohamed Abdel Raman went on a run from the wing, burst his way inside the box and fired a strike past goalkeper Ronwen Williams at the near post.
In Group C’s other match on Sunday, Ghana beat Sao Tome 3-1.
The final standings saw Ghana top the group with 13 points with Sudan in second on 12 with both countries rewarded with a place in the delayed tournament now scheduled for early 2022.
South Africa finished with 10 points after three wins, a draw and two defeats. They scored eight goals and conceded seven in their ultimately failed campaign.
AFCON 1996 will remain South Africa’s lone success in the continent’s biggest tournament for another year.

South Africa is just a useless team.
How they have one of the best domestic leagues in Africa, top infrastructure, and continue to be so useless amazes me.

There are no more minnows in football across the world. The FIFA ranking system is not everything!

If Sudan were more composed in front of goal it could have been 5-0 easy.

you are right. Not taking anything away from Sudan.iworo wrote:There are no more minnows in football across the world. The FIFA ranking system is not everything!
But South Africa are still useless.
they've always been a side of weak character that flatters to decieve. They should be a much better team.

Uncle Bret Fart, did you watch the game at all? If SA were able to convert all the clear chances they had in the first half, they would have won 3 - 2 or even 4 - 2.bret- hart wrote:If Sudan were more composed in front of goal it could have been 5-0 easy.

That’s true.
Re: AFCON dream ends in tears for South Africa after Sudan l
Anyone saying there are no more minnows in football is not watching this Tanzania vs Lybia game. How can 2 players miss 2 open net chances like Tanzania did and you say they are not minnows?

There are South Africa is just one of them now.iworo wrote:There are no more minnows in football across the world. The FIFA ranking system is not everything!
20 years is a long time but once South Africa was arguably one of the better teams on the continent and now they aren't really much better than say Cape Verde or Comoros. From being the only team to make the semis or medal in 1996, 1998 and 2000 to today.

Are we aware that Sudan knocked South Africa out?
(1) South Africa will not be at Cameroon 2021
(2) They lost 0-2 to Sudan yesterday
(3) This means Ghana and Sudan qualify from the group
(4) South Africa needed two points from their last two games but alas could not manage it
(5) They drew 1-1 with Ghana in their penultimate game
(6) With yesterday’s loss, they had one point from two games
(7) No doubt, heads will roll after this development
(8) How have Bafana Bafana fallen so low?
(9) They should be beating Sudan with ease
(10) There is no way a Nigerian team can do this and all hell will not break loose

Sudan AND South Africa knocked out NIGERIA before, along with fake Congo. They all played their part.
Re: Are we aware that Sudan knocked South Africa out?
The funny part is that the South African situation was us not too long go... People here have conveniently forgotten about we used to badly struggle NOT TOO LONG AGO in a group with the likes of Sudan, Malawi, Congo Brazzaville, Kenya and other minnows ...We've forgotten how we were used to pulling out our calculators at the end of every qualifying round to determine our fate... selective amnesia dey really worry our people when it suits our agendas and arrogant delusionsvancity eagle wrote:Sudan AND South Africa knocked out NIGERIA before, along with fake Congo. Re: Are we aware that Sudan knocked South Africa out?
They have made it out the group stage only twice since 2004 and have only qualified twice since 2008 (minus the time they hosted). Plus they have not qualified for the World Cup since 2002 (except as hosts). Our situations are not comparable.Tobi17 wrote:The funny part is that the South African situation was us not too long go... Re: Are we aware that Sudan knocked South Africa out?
Context is key, in 2012 and 2015 that we missed out there were only 16 participants as opposed to 24 now. We would have qualified if it was today. There’s nothing necessarily special about qualifying now.Tobi17 wrote:The funny part is that the South African situation was us not too long go... Many are still calling for the SE coach to be fired for beating Benin by one goal.
They are still fuming from their ugly mouths why certain players (of which one of them rescued the one goal win) were even invited/in camp.
From experiences, these are types that are so bloated and have never played this sport competitively even at elementary level. They just comment because they have the ugly mouth.

Re: AFCON dream ends in tears for South Africa after Sudan l
of the 24 teams there are 9 new teams from the 2019 edition
If Sierra Leone beats out Benin, it will be 10 new teams.
I think the new 24 team format is great, there isn't much difference in quality between a whole bunch of teams at the bottom end, we will have a lot of turnover like this from tournament to tournament, and overall AFrica will become more competative.

Re: AFCON dream ends in tears for South Africa after Sudan l
Bafana Bafana missing out of AFCON is what happens when players on a team lack 'team discipline'.
SA, like most sub-Sahara national teams have great individual players, but selfish to the core.
I've said this before. The first sub-Saharan African team that implements team discipline will shock
the football world, and win the World Cup.
