More for WE that didn’t know who did the coaching at “their” club.

On trying to stop Messi:
Carlos Queiroz, Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant when Manchester United won the Champions League in 2008, was so obsessed with doing just that he used sit-up mats on the training pitch to prepare for the semi-final against Barcelona and show the players exactly where they had to go. "We'd never seen such attention to detail," Gary Neville recalls. "We rehearsed time and again, sometimes walking through the tactics slowly with the ball in our hands."

It went against everything Ferguson wanted in his teams – "defended really deep, put myself through torture, put the fans through hell," he writes in his latest autobiography – but United did not concede a goal over 180 minutes and went through thanks to a Paul Scholes special. Ferguson, sans Queiroz, then abandoned those tactics against Barcelona in the 2009 and 2011 finals. "I wanted a more positive outlook and we were beaten partly because of the change in emphasis. If we had retreated to our box and kept the defending tight, we might have achieved the results we craved."

We Man U fans should not go the way or Arsenal (Read CE) fans who do not have the heart for pressure. Moyes is in his first year and the pressure is coming more from Media and opposition fans who all of a sudden have an opinion about the state of play at Man U. The comments are comical at best...

The season is still 32 games away
:bump:
The season is now 4 games away and Moi-Moyes has finally got it right - got the boot right up the arse!

He should have kept Fergie's coaches for 1-2 seasons to guide him and help him settle in at the club. Getting rid of championship winning coaches and replacing them with Steve Round, Jimmy Lumsden, and England's reserve GK from the 1980s just was not prudent.

Do WE still think Fergie was a coach?
Unlike Sir Alex Ferguson, Louis Van Gaal often takes training himself and is hands-on with coaching.

More on Fergie's "coaching" for WE.
United’s players didn’t see Ferguson every day. He didn’t lead training sessions, and spent most of his week in his office. Van Gaal, by contrast, is omnipresent. The training ground forever resounds with his instructions and praise.

This tactic of famous big name manager with experience + Class of 92 member as assistant manager, is what Man Utd should have done last summer when Ferguson retired.

According to this, Moyes was not the first choice to replace Ferguson. I am starting to wonder if Moyes was the THIRD choice given that Ferguson also famously met with Guardiola in New York?...I wonder if the subject of Ferguson's retirement and replacement came up in that conversation.

Alex Ferguson ‘asked Carlo Ancelotti to be Manchester United manager’
• Real Madrid president says Italian was first choice
• Approach made in summer 2013, claims Florentino Pérez

The Guardian, Wednesday 28 May 2014 13.54 EDT

Carlo Ancelotti turned down the manager's job at Manchester United, according to the president of Real Madrid.

Sir Alex Ferguson wanted Carlo Ancelotti to succeed him as Manchester United manager last summer, according to the Real Madrid president, Florentino Pérez.

Ferguson has claimed he hand-picked David Moyes to follow him into United after 26 years in charge. However, Pérez says Ferguson approached Ancelotti when he was leaving PSG last year to offer him the chance to take over at Old Trafford, and the Italian opted for Real Madrid instead.

“I’m absolutely sure [they did],” Pérez told the Spanish radio station Cope when asked if United wanted Ancelotti as their manager. “Not this year, but last year. Ferguson asked him to succeed him.”

Ancelotti, a former Chelsea manager, led Madrid to their 10th European Cup and the Copa del Rey in his first season in charge at the Bernabéu.

Moyes was sacked just 10 months into his six-year contract after failing to secure Champions League qualification.

 This thread reminds me of the thread in which I had to educate Ayo Akinfe on the difference b/w “growth” and “development”. The title of this thread should be renamed: The difference b/w managing and coaching.

Wow 8 pages of dance arguing the obvious. Everyone and their papa, including and ferries and leprechauns know this. SAF strength was management. He even managed the refs. I personally (subjective) believe he chose not to coach and hence didn't develop that part of his skill to full potential. Rather he hired others to do the coaching.

His legacy shows the importance of management in relation to winning. For example, his greatest rival, Wenger good coach but much poorer manager won considerably less while his teams could arguably played better football. Mourinho on the other hand is both a good coach and manager which made him great in terms of success.

SAF : great manager, poorer coach so hired coaches= lots of success
Wenger, Rickard: great coaches, poorer managers didn't hire managers (limited periods of success)
Mourinho: Great manager, good coach = extremely successful. (If he learns to manage his boards like SAF did he would most likely exceed SAF)

And Rijkaard was a horrendous coach. one of the worst there ever was. Relegated Sparta and got the barca job because of his Godfather. Ronaldinho carried him, and we all saw what happened when Ronaldinho lost interest in football. After that, Rijkaard has failed everywhere he has gone and no top club will touch him. The guy coached Barca and no top club wanted him, you dont ask yourself why??/ Open secret in football that he is very very bad. He is lucky his Godfather, Cruyff, helped him.

This possibly sums up the difference b/w a coach and a manager.

Each coach has his own personality. My leadership is based on human values, on sharing and being friendly. If you only know about football, you are lost.
