King Louis' 3-5-2 already at the pillory. Tomatoes filling up the barrels. Change is after all that most deplorable of acts.

@coach

A certain sense at Chelsea and Mourinho of a lack of real evolution and of going back to the future.

The same template circa 2004-06, power, control, counterattack, with a little less pace outwide vs Robben/Duff.

We watched this very boring video, 500 times, of Sacchi doing defensive drills, using sticks and without the ball, with Maldini, Baresi and Albertini. We used to think before then that if the other players are better, you have to lose. After that we learned anything is possible – you can beat better teams by using tactics." Jurgen Klopp

Certainly. It was very much the class of 2004. Horse power at the expense of innovation. They'll go far in the league, brute force is after all one of the most fruitious of approaches.

Expect to see the most efficient bus parking in the Champions League since Chelsea's last triumph. It will be interesting to see how Liverpool take to the contest. There is something pulsating about their Diamond, raw, ravishing, almost as alluring as those plucked from the bloodied soils of Sierra Leone. Shor' sleef or lon' sleef...Short of course, was there ever any doubt.

Another diabolical display from United. Square pegs, rounds holes. Van Gaal should be thinking more about getting the best out of what he has at present, than forcing the misfit into an unsuitable mould.

Struggling to see what the big picture, big vision that makes it all add together is.

Rojo comes in; left center-back, left back or left wingback.

Yet there is Shaw, LB, LWB...

Now there is Di Maria to come.
Yet there is Januzaj, if not Ashley Young, or Mata...or Kagawa if u want to stretch the argument....

I think he changes the system eventually...

Di Maria is their Mata moment. It doesnt make much sense, but he's a fabulous prospect. Where does he play, tactically? The 3-5-2 is abandoned to accommodate him surely. A 4-3-1-2 or 4-2-2-2 perhaps. Perhaps he persists with the 3-5-2 and sentences Mata to purgatory. Its a fabulous acquisition, the stuff of fantasy and precious little thought. A 3-4-3 could potentially work, but they haven't the midfield for it and again, Mata becomes surplus to requirement. The biggest problem for United is the closure of PSG's purse. If Van Gaal had his way, surely Mata would be out.

Very interesting by Luis Enrique...

But I think he needs to put serious pressure on Busquets; he is constraining both the speed and quality of circulation. Although his work in the non possession phase remains top notch...

3-2-3-2, or 4-3-3 with an advancing centreback/stopper? There are many outlets who refuse to see Barcelona in anything but that synonymous with their very name. Perhaps too harsh, maybe its both, a transitional species that exists as one and the other, a tactical archeoptryx. Great to see such ingenuity in the game. Herein lies the majesty of La Liga. This is where it leads, in the realms of thought and implementation. As much as one relishes the Premier League punch up, there can only be respect for some of the great thinkers spewing out of Spain's bosom.

Football can be a funny game; a game of contrasts.

31mins into the game @ WHL, Balotelli shoots wide with GK Hugo Lloris stranded outside the box. Cameras catch Balotelli on his knees in anguish; Spurs fans doubled over in derisive laughter, & Brendan Rogers applauding with a huge smile.

Being a student of the game, I wondered why the wild contrast? Who is the joke really on?

LFC base formation is a diamond, Spurs is a 4-2-3-1, with Bentaleb and Capoue as double pivot, and Erikson in the hole.

2. Early exchange and tactical battle is on establishing ability to play out of the back against the reality of pressing; from LFC perspective, EXPECTED high press from Spurs given Pocahunta's antecedents...

So what did Rogers do, and what the heck has that got to do with Balotelli and the derisive laughter?

- Two fullbacks push up; both with athleticism and space to recover if necessary; Dier and Rose are thus engaged.
- 2 strikers occupy the CDs, (Vertonghen and Khaboul, both of no known ability to recover when beaten for speed). But that's not all she wrote!
- Said strikers begin to play hookey! Movement off the ball across the entire last 3rd; dropping deep into midfield AFTER initially positioning in the inside channel astride the CDs...Result? uncertainty!
- What to do then is the question b/4 the CDs... Follow the striker upfield; or let the CMs pick them up?

Remember the primary tactical battle is still about playing out of the back!

- One CM picks him up; what about Sterling at the tip of the diamond? Threatening to push up from the hole?

But that's not all, cus Rogers is a wicked man!

- Gerard drops into CD as 3rd centerback; Sterling then drops back. VOILA!!!

Hence cometh the outlet thru which the ball is played, technically out of the back without loss of possession!

- The result was LFC morphing into a hybrid shape, confronting Spurs' 4-2-3-1 with a 3-4-1-2.

You can't press what your eyes can't see!!!

So what about that 31st minute incident, u still ask? Really?

Well, with the seed of confusion firmly sown, and cooperation between CDs and CMs as smooth as rush hour traffic at Obalende, Balotelli suddenly drops back as outlet for the back three.

- Kaboul bites on that delicious hooked worm, dangling appetizingly at the tip of the bait, and follows him. The Italian, in his full element, shows his power in shielding the ball and turning his man.

- And the space vacated by Kaboul?

- Sterling!

He pushes up into that space as Balo releases a chipped ball behind the Spurs backline. Lloris rushes out and clears at his feet...

And the stray ball runs directly at Mario Balotelli!

You still laughing :???: :???:
:source:

CE is a funny place. Lacking intellectual rigor, all sorts of claims are made unchallenged.

According to one of them, Spurs had a bad day at the office, period!

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha....

The 4-1-2-1-2/3-4-1-2 is a joyous metamorphosis further empowered by Liverpool's Arsenal of speed and guile. T'is interesting to see how impossible reversing into a back four and advanced stopper has proven at Old Trafford. If four can become three, surely three can become four.

One has wondered how Liverpool would cope with Tottenham's aggressive press, the answer, with ease.

Interesting to see how man-marking Steven Gerrard has rendered him relatively obsolete whilst revealing every wrinkle on his forehead. If this is to become a ploy used by the opposition to reduce the diamond to cubic zirconia, then perhaps, t'is time for Rodgers to rethink his approach a tad, perhaps a magic square, slightly tilted, a quadrilateral for those ardent geometrists, would be more appropriate. Lucas is not the ideal person to flank Gerrard, his trail of thought is slower than his pedestrian movement. The energetic Emre Can should prove a worthy addition, but could this be another Sahin?

In the absence of Sturridge, depending on the opposition, Sterling or Lmabert should partner Balotelli, though the former would perhaps be the better given the latter's reserved application of his pace. Lallana should slot into midfield with Henderson perhaps a little deeper, thus opening up an opportunity for Markovic or Coutinho. Alternatively, neither starts, Sterling remains at the principal corner of the four and perhaps Borini or Lambert start. Either way, Liverpool cannot play with one up top, it is somewhat devolutionary.

Gerrard's problems are the equivalent of what you call a coverage sack in American football. Without the movement of Sturridge, u cannot stretch the filed enough for his space to emerge...

Why is Rodgers forcing the 4-3-3 issue? A couple nice touches aside, Markovic looked rather Assaidi, Lallana came to prominence centrally, the formation picks itself. Will be interesting to see how Brendan approaches the derby.

@BeniTx, in regards to Liverlesspool, pathetic...now, where were we? Yet another abject, rudderless, empty right upper quadrant display from a side, frankly speaking, in freefall, arms wide spread, patiently waiting for the deathly embrace of the concrete blanket. Pathetic is not too harsh an assessment, if anything, too lax. Basel opened up the midfield and defence like presents on the 25th, this in spite of the triumvirate of Allen, Henderson and Lucas, also known as absolute hogwash. Not only was it pathetic, it was poor in every which way possible. What was the purpose of any of it? Where was the attacking emphasis or thrust in a must win game. Ricky Lambert resembled Jimmy Nail in stilettos, the strategy couldn't have been more contrary to his attributes. Far from top drawer, second or third even, but with precious little movement about him, d#$% was flaccid and limp.

What is Rodgers trying to do at present, besides motion towards the exit door and spend more time with his, fame chasing bit of slap and tickle?

Injuries have been injurious to Liverpool's cause, but none has been more parasitic than the warped tinkerings of Brendan, who seems to be coming down with acute Ranieritis.

Pathetic is jane fondaesque!

The performance has made me question everything I know or thought I knew about football.. It has sent me right back to school!

And so the significance of Suarez be known. If Gerrard is the heartbeat, Luis is or rather was, the left ventricle. In addition to bringing in a host of playground Top Trumps, Rodgers has papered over the absence with the weirdest of sciences since Mazi Ranieri stood before the petri dish. What does any of it mean, Gerrard, no legs and all, in the number ten role, a reflex reaction to Downing marshaling him for a full ninety, all the while Pirlo remains mercurial deep-lying at the tender age. Where was Moreno, what has Jose Enrique ever done at Anfield to justify being used as any more than an auxiliary left-sided centre-half in the Carling Cup vs weaker opposition? Where was the creativity to come from? The movement and dynamism? Yes the SAS is down or departed, but should that render the infantry so futile and thoughtless? The shape was pathetic and has been in almost every game this season, perhaps a geometry set would be the perfect present for Brendan this Xmas. Nonsense, absolute nonsense.
