Coach Imama Amapakabo has fired another broadside at the Rangers management – the players are dejected because they were not respected by the club despite the feat they achieved.

Last year, Rangers made history when they ended a 32-year wait to be crowned Nigeria champions.

However, ‘The Flying Antelopes’ have not been living up to their nickname this season after they crashed out of both the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup and they are currently rock bottom of the NPFL.

Imama himself is unsure of whether he is still coach of the team after he was suspended, sacked and then suspended all in a week.

The young coach has now said he believes that what has been the biggest undoing of Rangers this year is that the heroes of last season have not been accorded their deserved respect.

“The team played with expectations and motivation especially after they won the league after 32 years,” he explained.

“But they were not respected, the management for many weeks did not negotiate with the boys, the general manager was left behind in Enugu while we were in pre-season training camp in Benin City.

“The players felt bad and in the end, they were dejected.

“A player like Chisom (Egbuchulam) wanted to stay, but when this happened he decided to go to Sweden.

“There was talk of houses for the boys on Rangers Avenue and rumours they will be given cars after they won the league.

“These were nobodies, who achieved a whole lot by the end of the season. A team of no stars who became stars at the end of the season.

“It is difficult to deal with the minds of people especially if you had not properly handled that before.”

The Enugu Government eventually rewarded the champions with cash gifts and a plot of land to each player and official.

“As we speak, we don’t have documents (for the land), bureaucracy is holding that back, but I trust no time, it will be done. The Governor is honest and sincere,” assured the coach.

Imama himself has also been critical of the management of the club.

“In football, what you see on the pitch is 30% and 70% is behind the scene,” he said.

“Rangers we were not prepared for this season, there were no funds to clear new players.

“Our programme was also hindered by lack of funds, it was a big challenge. We had to manage with we had on the table.

“We have been running Rangers in the media not in the office. Let’s see how this drama plays out.”
