Antonio Rudiger: Chelsea sign Roma defender for a reported initial fee of £29m

Premier League champions Chelsea have signed Roma and Germany defender Antonio Rudiger on a five-year contract for a reported initial fee of £29m.

Rudiger, 24, completed the transfer a week after helping Germany win the Confederations Cup in Russia.

"It's a great feeling because not every player has the opportunity to join a huge club like this," said Rudiger.

Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo said: "He is a player of proven quality."

Rudiger will take over the number two shirt left vacant after Branislav Ivanovic's departure to Zenit St Petersburg in February.

The difficulties of statistical thinking describes a puzzling limitation of our mind: our excessive confidence in what we believe we know, and our apparent inability to acknowledge the full extent of our ignorance and the uncertainty of the world we live in. We are prone to overestimate how much we understand about the world and to underestimate the role of chance in events -- Daniel Kahneman (2011), Winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics

"It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is. If the--if he--if 'is' means is and never has been, that is not--that is one thing. If it means there is none, that was a completely true statement....Now, if someone had asked me on that day, are you having any kind of sexual relations with Ms. Lewinsky, that is, asked me a question in the present tense, I would have said no. And it would have been completely true."

That was Jose's botch job.

Emenalo gets you the players, but it is up to the manager to play or declare them surplus to requirements.

Chelsea still made tons of money on Lukaku, so kudos to Emenalo.

Solid defensive signing. If Duracell joins too, Chelsea will have a very solid base. Marcos Alonso has been cited as a weak link but chipped in with some important goals and was a decent outlet wide left. If rumours are to be believed, Sandro is being courted for the flying wingback role, is such an outlandish outlay necessary in such a position? A centre forward is a must, talk of Morata, for all the talent, surely the bargaining power has to be in the hands of the buyer. A backup dancer far from Mickie Jackson, how the hell Real are charging 70 odd is ridiculous.

I doubt Chelsea will break their wage structure to bring in a WB. Sandro to SB may just be a pipe dream.
