Guinea reject a June Nations Cup to accommodate Qatar 2022
http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/31684625

Hosts Guinea have ruled out switching the dates of the 2023 African Nations Cup finals to June to accommodate the Qatar World Cup, their sports minister said.

Domani Dore contradicted a statement by Fifa general secretary Jerome Valcke, who said last week that the 2023 Nations Cup would be pushed back six months to June from its usual January date.

The 2022 World Cup is set for November and December, following the task-force's recommendation.

Valcke said that hosting the Nations Cup just one month later would not be feasible, and he added that it had been agreed with the Confederation of African Football (Caf) to move the 16-team tournament to later in the year.

Guinea, however, say they will refuse the new dates.

"We cannot accommodate the Nations Cup in June, it is the rainy season," Dore told Guinea television.

"Caf needs to take care to seek the advice of Guinea that we as a state decide which dates the tournament will be played. We understand the problem around the World Cup and a clash with the Nations Cup.

"But Caf needs to take care to ask our opinion. In June, we cannot accommodate a Nations Cup tournament. It's not possible," Dore added.

The Confederation of African Football reiterated their stance regarding the 2023 Nations Cup in Guinea, telling BBC Sport that "a decision about Afcon 2023 will be taken by Caf's Executive ‎Committee, and nobody else, in due time."

The same people that made the change, will themselves change it back to January/February. Really silly eurocentric move by CAF. Asia also host their nations cup in January. What is wrong with CAF?

Heavy rains cause longest kick-off delay of 2012 AFCON

The African Cup of Nations Group A second-round match between Zambia and Libya had to be delayed by 75 minutes after heavy rains hit the Estadio de Bata pitch in the Equatorial Guinea port city of Bata.

A visibly disappointed Zambia coach, Herve Renard was seen walking onto the pitch and shaking his head in a manner to suggest that he was not going to allow his players to play in the presenting conditions.

After the rains subsided, the pitch was left waterlogged and it took a committed effort by the stadium’s management to ensure that it was drained to acceptable levels.

All useable tools, including brushes, card-boards and a tractor-mounted grass slitter were used to ensure that the game was got underway.

folem,

Yes it does because those games when rained out can always be postponed. Not the same with a tournament where games are tightly scheduled. In fact, games are regularly postponed in the league not just for rains but also for religious holidays and when clubs are involved in the continent. Thus, the league schedule cannot be compared to a tournament schedule, bros. There is a difference.

Furthermore, the reason why June/July is a big issue is that it is the period where the rain forest belt experiences heavy rain. In PH, for instance, it has been raining for two days. You are unlikely to have that in Dec-March. Rains may fall in other months but those are rare. Again, there is a difference.

Ohenhen1,

It may be difficult to do it then. What you will find is a divided Africa where some will say lets have the AFCON in the South and North where the rains may not be an issue in June. For the rain forest belt, it will be almost impossible to go through a June/July schedule without disruptions to an AFCON schedule.

Great point. Such disruptions simply multiply in a June/July schedule. That is the ISSUE right there.

Heavy rain failed to dampen the spirits at Johannesburg’s National Stadium on Saturday as the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) kicked off in colourful, rhythmical African style.

In Southern Africa, the rainy season typically lasts from October to April and reaches maximum strength between November and March. Most locations receive more than 75% of their annual precipitation during this 7month period, with some parts in the northwest receiving more than 90% of their total annual rainfall. The year-to-year variability in rainfall over southern Africa shows a strong relationship to the ENSO cycle (Ropelewski and Halpert 1987, 1989), with below-normal rainfall generally observed during Pacific warm episodes (e.g., the 1994/95 rainy season) and above-normal rainfall generally observed during Pacific cold episodes (e.g., the 1995/96 rainy season).

folem,

So CAF will enjoy playing under heavy downpour? Do I assume that you accept it and will enjoy it likewise even if it requires games postponed?

If so, kudos to you.

I certainly do not want games and schedules disrupted by rains as would be the case more often in June. In fact, with the move to June, I will prefer that the AFCON is held in the North or South so that we can watch games without weather disruptions. Never mind the political fallouts and TV make-ups that CAF would have to deal with when a game is putoff.

I do hope you understand the difference in peak rainfall in the rain forest belt compared to peak rainfall in other belts. There is a reason it is called the rain forest. You appear to make comparisons that are questionable. Maybe you will compare the hottest months in PH to the hottest months in Maidugri or the desert as well. Please see the map below before making such comparisons.

E II,

When discussing issues of weather pattern across Africa one size don't fit all, whether it's January or June contingencies will be provided. Better drainage systems and general improved infrastructure is a must.

Rain @ CAN 2015 match.

AP Monday 26 Jan 2015

Cape Verde and Zambia were both eliminated from the African Cup of Nations on Monday after playing to a 0-0 draw on a rain-soaked field.

The game was played through heavy rain at Ebebiyin Stadium, particularly early in the second half. Puddles developed quickly and the field was flooded, stopping the flow of the ball. But as the rain slowed, the ground drained remarkably well, allowing for play to continue.

folem,

I agree that drainage is a must. However, the issue is which months will be best to have the AFCON. While in some regions their heaviest rains are in January/Feb, it is not comparable to the massive inches of rains that occur elsewhere in June/July. Thus, the issue is which months would be best considering variations in weather. June/July is probably the worst of those months because it is the time where the region that has more rains will in fact have its heaviest rain falls. Compare this to North Africa where rainfall is quite low comparatively no matter the month.

The goal should not only be drainage but also to play in months when rainfall will be less likely to be disruptive. Take this month in Nigeria, for instance, how many people will leave their homes to go watch a match under the condition?

CAF has settled for June/July, IMHO it would be best to move the 2019 AFCON from Cameroon where the rainfall in the south can be quite heavy at this time of the year. Your examples of links to the AFCON in Equatorial Guinea are great examples. Remember that was in January/Feb when there is less rainfall in Equatorial Guinea. Imagine what would have happened if that been held in June/July. Thus, it is necessary to move the AFCON to Morocco where there is less chance of rain being a disruption. That may save CAF from a PR disaster waiting to happen.

I don't believe any PR disaster will happen. There will be a few disruptions but it won't be major. In the penultimate Euros, there was a massive rain delay for Ukraine vs France.

Egypt therefore secured a third clean sheet from three Group D fixtures, but may yet regret doing so. Much has been made of the poor condition of the pitch in Port-Gentil, where the group winners were scheduled to remain for their final-eight fixture.

Heavy rain has worsened the pitch's condition in recent days -- runners-up Egypt, however, will next play in Oyem

To me, it matters not what people says, AFCON in June is NOT a good idea. It will not work-out well, unless the plan is to "black-out" the West African nations from hosting the tournament

Even if you have good drainage system. The heavy downpour of rains will wreck the tournament. We experience 7 straight days of rain in Lagos. It rains so fast and heavy even a good drainage can't handle it. It will flood. There will be delays for the drainage system to work to clear the field.

Chief, you are my paddy, but I am going to disagree with you on this. I think no amount of drainage system will solve our raining season issues. Many of our Cities are not well planned or designed with such in mind and the amount of rain fall is too much for your idea to work.

A blockage of a drainage-line or outlet will quickly lead to issues no one can handle within a day. In the meantime, the game schedule(s) is/are screwed and catastrophe results. Thus, the AFCON raining season plan will not work; however, let's wait and see.

African players making a living in Europe who are the Stars of the tourney are being protected. Alternatively let them come back home?
