That is one of the problems with Nigeria. We focus on one thing and ignore other opportunities. The government want to improve revenue coming from tourism. It will also create jobs.

The government is also fixing roads.
I didn't make this comment in ignorance. I understand that Lagos already has other stadiums it can use. The NS is a monster of a project in a state that needs far more infrastructural development than it has capacity for. So why would a state like Lagos focus on the NS? What is the economic engine the NS will possibly bring over and above the other stadiums??

In a perfect world, it's a good idea. Certainly in a developed economy, I'd vote for it. For third world states, this project is a waste of resources.

Gotti, whatever you see on CNN and other similar outlets arent true. There's no other country that can offer you what US syatem will give you @ the snap of a finger.....SPECIALIST in every field!! None! What you will get from the smallest US city snapping your finger, you'll have to wait 3-6 months in all those countries you mentioned........ The Illegals and the uninsured get EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING...Its not true....we even send them home with breathing machines...Its so untrue.....Anyways, walk into any hospital and find out the info i just told you...
Dude, again I do not want to belabor this discourse not least because it's not the proper forum for it and also because I am loathe to being accused again of "exaggerating my experiences". Nonetheless, no bit of knowledge or education (which is not synonymous with educational certification) is wasted, and this might just be one of those teachable moments.

For starters, I was born in the US, and apart from high school in Nigeria, spent most of my life in the US - including grade school, university, law school and business school, and has spent the greater majority of my professional career in the US (which, as I previously noted, includes significant professional contact with the healthcare industry). So, I do not base my worldview or opinions on CNN nor any other media outlet.

Nonetheless, the one glaring thing that you fail to grasp is that by the time those so-called "illegals and uninsured" (as well as many "legals" and working-class citizens, who actually pay taxes) show up at your hospital, they are often already in an EMERGENCY situation which could have very well been averted if they had healthcare coverage and regularly consulted with practitioners. Accordingly, yet again, it is largely irrelevant to (eg) a cancer patient is already well into an advanced stage (3 or 4) that there is Specialist in every hamlet in the US, when if he had adequate universal coverage a simple routine check would have detected the cancer early and almost certainly (depending on the cancer) lead to a favorable resolution of same.

Lagos State government has expressed its willingness to renovate the National Stadium Surulere, Lagos. Governor Akinwunmi Ambode made the state’s intent known when he paid a condolence and courtesy visit to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, at his residence in Abuja at the weekend.

“I will like to bring the National Stadium to life. The last time a game was played there was in 2005. There is also the employment aspect of football and hosting of matches at the stadium. That includes the jerseys, branding, mama put, the sign writers, the supporters, merchandising, and so on. We want to bring back the football culture of Lagos State to the National Stadium after its renovation,” Ambode said.

Dalung thanked the governor for his visit and praised Lagos for its successful hosting of the second Lagos City Marathon. He called on the state government to add more entertainment and culture to the event in subsequent editions to get more youths involved and to ensure that Nigerians benefit more from the whooping prize money.

On the renovation of the National Stadium, the minister said he would go through their proposal and work on it. “It is only fair that we hand over the stadium to Lagos State for renovation since we’ve given to Enugu, Bauchi and Kaduna states.

Bros I beg to disagree on these highlighted ones, I worked in healthcare for a while. I know from experience that they are absolutely not true.
The illegals and uninsured you were talking about can only get these in emergency situations. What about preventive care? I know of a veteran who is bedridden and his wife has all kinds of insurance but still, goes through the hoop to get the basic necessities thanks to Medicare and its bureaucracy.
I have so many personal experiences that invalidate your assertion but this thread is about football and maintenance /management of facilities so lets stay on point.

To perfectly stay on point, I'm a physician and its what I do everyday. That's the truth. We not only give illegals open heart surgery, start and maintain them on dialysis, we sign contracts with Nursing homes to care for them for 3-6 months......Trust me, friend , they get everything....... Too bad I can't reveal private med info here...trust me.
Someone needs to be bold, set up a company and manage the national stadium

You still do not get it - penny wise, pound foolish...
If you have universal coverage and access to preventive care, open heart surgery might be unnecessary.

Meanwhile, if no private entity or person is not "bold" enough (I do not see you rushing down here to take advantage of such an apparently 'lucrative opportunity') to renovate/manage the stadium, the government(s) should not allow it to continue to blight Lagos - even if it is simply to demolish it and put the land to better use. We already have more than enough abandoned federal properties in Lagos. Anyway, it is all hypothetical at this point because the federal government has not yet even bothered to respond to the Lagos State proposal.

Chief Gotti, its not that simple. Preventive or primary healthcare will do nothing to make US system better. Nothing. The truth about the system is Americans want CHOICES.......patients without insurance can fire specialists (Surgeons) and ask for alternatives, can get a PET scan in the smallest American city....Look, there's more resources for the have nots in this system, I swear.....community clinics, residencies, all Big hospitals run free clinics, special programs.....There's so much outlets for so called indigent....My county even established insurance for them.....Look, any system that'd spoil you with so much choices will be expensive, period! No country can match what US has to over, I experienced NHS, England for 1 year. This country seeks perfection in everything. Trust me. Its imperfection will be the stopping point for most countries.
As for the National Stadium, I wish I were in a position to take the risk, I would.......maybe with your help

Do YOU personally take advantage of preventive healthcare?
If you do, why would you brlieve that indigents make a voluntary “choice” not to.

Yet again, what is the substantive benefit of a PET scanning machine on every street corner if people do not have affordable access to them? Healthcare is ultimately about how many people we can keep alive and/or productive, so while getting an MRI scan for every routine checkup might give the practitioner a boner, it does not make the system “better” if folks avoid routine checkups because they cannot afford the cost of an MRI scan, when significantly cheaper lower tech methods like a simple x-ray or even a mere physical exams would suffice. You position is akin to arguing that Nigeria has one of the ‘best’ primary and secondary school educational system, because the relatively few folks who can afford the very top (and expensive) private schools can get pretty much a similar quality of education as in the UK or US. Bros, the “best” healthcare (or any other) system is the one that provides the greatest good to everyone (or at least the greatest number of people) regardless of status.

You just confirmed what I wrote. Open heart surgery and dialysis are not everyday preventive care. They are emergency in most cases.
Anyways like I said my personal experiences with family and work experience said nope you are dead wrong.
And there are reasons hospitals and clinics or health facilities hire case workers, medical billing and transcriptionists.

One more thing: if you do not have money, you do NOT have choices...

While I am forever proud of the US as my country of birth and the country that I have proudly spent by far the majority of my life thus far in, thankfully the qualitative education that I received mostly in the US has endowed me with enough independent thought not to drink the so-called “choices” Kool-Aid being peddled by paid lobbyists (and the politicians benefiting from their legalized corruption). If these “choices” were so beneficial, Congress would opt-out of its “socialist” single-payer system and allow each Congressperson to make his/her own individual choice! I do not want to stray too far (we have strayed far enough from the topic already), this past Sunday, we had the worst mass shooting, perpetuated with a fully automatic weapon, in a country that on the average has more than 1 mass shooting (defined as more than 4 persons shot - excluding the shooter) per day - 383 mass shootings in 2016, with 33,000 gun-related deaths. But instead of enacting reasonable gun control legislation like every other advanced democracy (because paid lobbyists have couched it as a matter of “freedom”), let’s instead concentrate on the “best” equipment (akin to your PET scan argument) deployed by the Police after the occurrence of something that might well have been prevented (or at least chances thereof significantly diminished).

Again, it is NOT a priority of the state government....

The Governor had only proposed taking over the NS, and the federal government has not even bothered to respond yet. Nonetheless, it is a conversation that NEEDS to be had. Personally (as I had canvassed many times on this forum), I would vote to demolish the stadium and put the land to better use, but whatever the decision ultimately is it should be made, preceded by this conversation propelled by the LASG’s proposal among others. We have way too many abandoned public assets in Nigeria (which btw many public agencies and civil “servants” are actually being currently paid to run/manage/maintain these assets). Furthermore, whether I personally disagree with the Governor’s proposal (or otherwise), the reality is that the stadium is IN Lagos and primarily impacts upon Lagos and its citizens (and I fully understand how those who only ‘live’ on the Nigeria that exists on the Internet does not fully appreciate this). Accordingly, the same rationale that the LASG has felt compelled to assume the federal government’s responsibility for the Badagry Expressway and the Airport Road, among several other neglected or completely abandoned and dilapidated federal assets substantively underpins this proposal. And (again whatever my personal views against this proposal may be) many folks apparently do not appreciate that a stadium is key infrastructure for an INDUSTRY (not a hobby or social welfare) that has the potential to significantly contribute to development if properly harnessed.

PS: While I would loathe to keep dragging this discourse of the narrow confines of a football stadium, because you raised it, I feel compelled to point out that Lagos has the best roads in Nigeria (and probably in the subregion), with the arguable exception of Abuja. It has the greatest number of properly constructed and maintained sub-trunk roads in Nigeria, with proper road building standards codified into law (that, among other things, mandates covered sidewalks, drainage systems, street lighting, etc). It has the best public transportation system in Nigeria (including the much-studied BRT system, with its air conditioned buses that have provided succour and options to the underclass and have taken many cars off the roads for the middle class). It has by far the best public education system in Nigeria (employing technology to great effect) and the best public healthcare system in Nigeria (including free maternal care). Lagos actually has the only truly functional waste management system in Nigeria (and that should get better with the new system that has just taken off). Rather than continue to wait on the largely inept federal electric power system (much like the National Stadium), it has taken the proactive step of pursuing its own PPP-IPP projects and today most public infrastructure in Lagos (the streetlights, the courts, government offices, public schools and hospitals, waterworks, the state university and polytechnic, etc) enjoy uninterrupted power supply, and many rural public schools run on solar power through another PPP initiative.

Also, not too dissimilar to this National Stadium proposal (again, regardless of whether one disagrees or otherwise) LASG has taken over large portions of the federal government's responsibility to provide equipment and welfare for the federal police (including raising death benefits and providing full scholarships for dependents). The Light Rail project that you referred to was stymied because the former federal administration effectively failed to grant the LASG the required permission to build the rail bridge over the Marina (and under Nigeria’s peculiar federal system, the FG controls the inland waterways) for the Blue Line, as well as the right of way for the proposed Red Line. Along the same lines, it took the federal government’s NNPC all of THREE YEARS to relocate its pipelines along the Badagry Expressway and up until this year the Military Cantonment in Ojo has bulked on the demolition of part of its fence which abuts the right of way. Obviously Lagos has a ton of work to do (it’s population alone is greater than that of many countries), but it is relatively far ahead of any government in Nigeria, including the federal government (thankfully Lagos does not benchmark itself relative to other Nigerian states but to international standards) and is frankly Nigeria’s BEST hope and developmental example.

Isn’t it true that those who played and learnt the game abroad
Have the better football sense than those who played the game
At home? Ighalo would have needed a second touch to score that
Goal.

The real deal wrote:Chief Gotti, its not that simple.

Not true....Many states do not offer free health care for illegals......name the states that provide free health care with exception of democratic states - Minnesota, Maryland and Massachusetts.

As a physician, do you have problems with society caring for the poor? Most western country with homogeneous ( same race) population care for their poor.

The real deal wrote: To perfectly stay on point, I'm a physician and its what I do everyday.
