The senior national team of Nigeria will take on South America giants Argentina in their first pre World Cup 2018 friendly game, Owngoalnigeria.com can exclusively report.

Nigeria have been searching for friendly games to help the team prepare adequately for the World Cup in Russia next year after sealing qualification with a game to spare courtesy of their 1-0 win over Zambia.

Their last group game , which is away to Algeria will take place on the 10th of November, and shortly after the game the team will play their first pre World Cup friendly game.

The Nigeria Football Federation ( NFF) have agreed a friendly game with Argentina which will take place in Spain on the 14th of November ‎, four days after their dead rubber World Cup 2018 Qualifiers tie against Algeria.

Just like Nigeria, Argentina are also through to next year World Cup and the game will help them prepare adequately for the tournament, after qualifying for the tournament in dramatic circumstances on the final day of the South America qualifiers with a 3-1 win away to Ecuador.

It will be the second time both countries will be meeting in a friendly game, with Argentina winning the first friendly game played in Malaysia ‎,while they’ve beaten Nigeria three times at three previous edition of the World Cup.

This will be amazing if true!!!

Would be a good game. I think it will be the third friendly though after we scattered them in Abuja.

Will FIFA allow Nigeria to play 2 matches in different continents within a week?

The Seleção will schedule two matches in Russia for next month: on Saturday 11, before the premises, in the Luzhnikí stadium in Moscow. Three days later, against Nigeria.

With Russia 2018 on the horizon in Argentina, the national team will go on the field to continue working towards the decisive stage, before the start of the World Cup.
In the case of both parties, it was sought that the two friendly matches in the same country to avoid that the delegation of the Selection makes long journeys. And in terms of the quality of the rivals, both Russia and Nigeria are qualified to play in the final phase of the World Cup, so the requirement for the team headed by Jorge Sampaoli will be of the highest level.

It will be the second time with full strength, third time overall.

The first time they fielded a very weakened side. We trounced them, their FA got so angry and fielded a full strength side then whooped us.
Buhari, whose two terms thankfully ground to a constitutional halt in May. (One thing both democracies have going for them is that their leaders, however bad, have only two terms to swing the wrecking ball.) Under Buhari, growth per head also plunged to 0. An economic agenda drawn from the dusty pages of a 1970s protectionist handbook failed to do the trick. Despite Buhari’s promise to tame terrorism and criminality, violence flourished. Despite his reputation for probity, corruption swirled. FT

Ghana players in Uganda then a few days later flew to Saudi Arabia for a friendly. Fifa did not say anything.

I was just about to post the same thing. We've played two friendlies (and one intercontinental match). We beat them in Nigeria 4-0 or 4-1 can't remember. Then we played in Malaysia I believe which they won. The match in Riyadh ended goal less.

And they've been us four times in four previous World Cups. 1994 (2-1), 2002 (1-0), 2010 (1-0), and 2014 (3-2).

Very sloppy journalism.

The second game was also a travesty: Nigeria was weakened, the match was played in Nepal I believe at altitude with the players landing for the game some 12 hours earlier after playing a qualifier in Mozambique and a 10 hour flight. Mikel, for example, was barely standing on his legs by half time.

---

As per the two games on two continents. Algeria is so close to Europe it really shouldn't matter. The distance from London or Madrid to Krasnodar is bigger than from Algiers.

Match to be played in Russia

https://www.aclsports.com/messis-argent ... ext-month/

Russia 2018 Friendly: Messi’s Argentina to face Nigeria next month

1986 World Cup winners, Argentina are planning to face African giants Nigeria in a friendly in Russia next month.

Both countries have qualified for next year’s FIFA World Cup in the European nation and have a rich history of meeting, having faced each other four times at the FIFA World Cup, the South Americans winning on each occasion.

Reports in Buenos Aires scooped by http://www.aclsports.com reveal that the Argentine Football Association (AFA) are close to sealing an agreement with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) for a November 14 date in Krasnodar.
.
With the South American World Cup qualifiers over, the Albiceleste will schedule two matches in Russia for next month, first on Saturday November 11 against World Cup hosts Russia at the Luzhnikí stadium in Moscow and three days later against Nigeria.

The November 14 date favours the Nigerians who will wrap up their qualifying schedule on Friday, November 10 away to Algeria. The last time Nigeria faced Argentina in a friendly match was in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2011, a game the Argentines won 3-1.

The Argentines are said to favour a match-up with the Super Eagles because both Nigeria and Russia have already qualified for the World Cup and so meets the requirement set by Argentine coach Jorge Sampaoli for the upcoming international window.

The group stage draws for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia will hold on December 1 in Moscow with bookmakers already predicting another Argentina vs Nigeria match-up.

I wouldn't bet my money on Argentina beating Nigeria in our current form if I were you... even when we were pretty garbage they somehow struggled against and barely beat us... It's always been a close one whenever we meet them

We were beating them 4-0 after 90 minutes. The ref added about 5  more minutes of injury time in addition to the 5 minute injury time signaled, at the end of which Argentina were gifted a dodgy penalty. They scored to make it 4-1. It was later discovered that the ref had been paid off by Asian gambling syndicates to guarantee an Argentina penalty goal at the end of the game.

the 2 games on 2 continent thing is dependent on the amount of days between the 2 matches.

I'm not sure but I think it needs to be either 3 or 4 days between matches on 2 different continents, either way there are 4 days between matches so we should be ok.

I like this friendly it will show us where and what we need to work on.

I hope this match however is not just a brand new 11 who have never played together, this will be a meaningless excercise.

There should also be some continuity from the Algeria match.

I wonder if Mikel will now want to be invited. His wife is Russian and I am sure he will relish playing the ARgentines.

Rohr needs to get his squad right here as these will be 2 high profile matches where we need to start to weed out useless players and integrate new players who can add to the final 23.

We need a good mix of regular starters and new prospects.

4 games against Argentina at the WC, 4 losses.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. We can't go toe-to-toe with them offensively, not yet.

I would like to see us experiment with a strictly counter attacking approach against Argentina this time. They have defensive issues and they will be wanting to experiment with their defense.

Match is subject to FIFA approval

World Cup-bound Nigeria will face Argentina in a friendly on November 14 in Krasnoder, Russia, after they rejected offers to play against Morocco, Iran and Saudi Arabia, officials said.

NFF general secretary Mohammed Sanusi disclosed that nearly all arrangements have been concluded with regards to the big match, subject to approval by world football–ruling body, FIFA and agreeable flight arrangements.

“We have had long and fruitful talks, and we can say that we have an agreement. We await the approval by FIFA and also, we have to agree on the flight arrangements that would be comfortable for the players and crew,” Sanusi said.

“The match will come up on 14th November, four days after the Super Eagles’ final 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying match away to Algeria.

“We had offers from teams like Iran, Saudi Arabia and Morocco but we have opted for the Argentines.”

The Eagles take on Algeria on Friday, November 10, while Argentina will take on World Cup hosts Russia same day in another friendly.

Nigeria and Argentina played two high –profile friendly matches in 2011, the first in Abuja in June ending 4-1 in favour of the Super Eagles.

The Albiceleste won the second encounter 3-1 in Dhaka, Bangladesh three months later.

NFF’s FIFA Match Agent Jairo Pachon of Eurodata Sport, who also organized the friendly matches with the Argentines in 2011 and has been working hard for various Nigerian National Teams in the areas of training camps and friendly games since 2009, said: “We are very pleased to be able to deliver such a high –profile game to celebrate the Super Eagles’ 2018 World Cup qualification.

“It was a lot of work over the past week but we are happy this has become reality. We will, in due course, reveal the Nigerian sponsor of the match who will have the match rights in Nigeria.”

While Argentina qualified for Russia on the final day of the South American qualification campaign, the Super Eagles have reached Russia with a match to spare.

Nigeria have had to confront Argentina in four of their previous five FIFA World Cup appearances, starting with a 2-1 defeat in Boston, USA in the African team’s debut in 1994. Argentina won another group phase clash 1-0 in Ibaraki, Japan in 2002, won a similar encounter by the same margin in Johannesburg, South Africa eight years later and then edged the Eagles 3-2 in Porto Alegre, Brazil in 2014.

Other famous encounters between both nations include two final matches of the Olympic Men’s Football Tournament – Nigeria edging it in 1996 in America and the Argies winning by the odd goal in China 12 years later.
