Former Super Eagles captain Nwankwo Kanu’s pet club Papilo FC will take no further part in the domestic second-tier league when it kicks off in March, Scorenigeria.com.ng has scooped.

This is sequel to suggestions the former Arsenal of London forward has washed his hands off the running of the club and has transferred the club’s slot in the Nigeria National League to Calabar Rovers.

“(Nwankwo) Kanu has sold Papilo FC to Calabar Rovers”, an official told Scorenigeria.com.ng without wanting to be named in print.

“It is already a done deal, so when the season, we will not be watching NNL matches here in Owerri”.

Scorenigeria.com.ng efforts to reach the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games U23 Eagles gold medalist failed as calls to his mobile phone were not answered.

Similarly, SMS sent to his mobile phone were not replied.

Chairman of the club, Ikechukwu dropped the call immediately the issue was raised.

He promised to call back later, a promise he has not fulfilled.

It would be recalled that in October, Kanu had complained of frustration caused by biased officiating in favour of government-owned clubs who boast bigger budgets.

He said then that such development is making things difficult for private clubs to thrive.
The difficulties of statistical thinking describes a puzzling limitation of our mind: our excessive confidence in what we believe we know, and our apparent inability to acknowledge the full extent of our ignorance and the uncertainty of the world we live in. We are prone to overestimate how much we understand about the world and to underestimate the role of chance in events -- Daniel Kahneman (2011), Winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics

Good for him. Running a club in Nigeria isn't easy

Good for whoever we like and support, bad for those we don't like. Selling of slots should be illegal. If you can't run a club then don't start one. If a club folds up, there should be a process of replacing them and not bidding war

This is pretty bad for the development of the game in 9ja. Only honesty can make this league world class.

It’s as old as the league itself...
It is effectively the Nigerian version of the NFL/NBA/NHL franchise relocation.

Technically (even if not in practice), it’s the club that’s being sold and not a slot, and the transaction is documented as such. This practice occurs predominantly in the lower-tier NNL (which is technically an amateur league). That’s how a clubs like Akwa United came into the league, buying up the old Vasco Da Gama franchise and assuming its place in the NNL, and Kwara State govt buying Exide of Ibadan, moving them to Ilorin (and I think combining them with Kwara Bombers) to form Kwara United and assume Exide’s place in the NNL. Also, MFM similarly bought and assumed the place of Bolowotan FC in the NNL.

It’s Nigeria if you invest in something you need to know there’s a 75% chance of getting nothing back financially or of any functional recognition as you can’t run a company especially a football club on your own!

Some of you really need to quit “visiting” Nigeria via the Internet...
Football is not a money-spinner in Nigeria, but generally your statement is grossly inaccurate.

Perhaps you will find it where Mardoff or Stanford stashed the cash they took from investors... :D

"Ponzi" was not a Nigerian nor is "Boiler Room" a Nigerian concept...
Wherever you invest, you still have to 'shine your eyes' (aka Due Diligence).
