Jose Mourinho: What is going on - and does he want out of Man Utd?
A month ago, when England were looking forward to a World Cup semi-final and as pre-season training for Europe's major clubs was just getting started, Manchester United's final US tour match against Real Madrid had a major question mark over it.

Gareth Bale would be involved. But for whom?

Fast forward four weeks and, though England did not find their utopia, Bale is happy enough, laughing and joking with his Real team-mates in Miami, his short-term future at the Bernabeu assured by new coach Julen Lopetegui.

But as they prepare for Wednesday's game, the question mark over United remains. If anything, it is bigger than before.

Manager Jose Mourinho's comments in the labyrinth of rooms at the Michigan Stadium on Saturday after a 4-1 loss to Liverpool saw to that.

So, it is time to ask the question. What is going on with Mourinho and Manchester United?

In front of the cameras, Mourinho has not been a jovial character for some time.

Something - probably the scars of dealing with the Madrid media during his time as Real boss - happened between his first stint at Chelsea and his second. Whatever it was, it has taken away the public geniality of the self-proclaimed 'Special One'.

Nevertheless, the breadth of the targets he fired at during his tetchy 10-minute post-match news conference after the loss to Liverpool was jaw-dropping.

He lamented the absence of senior players, decried the standard of some of the younger ones who are here, wistfully reflected on a transfer target he will not get, highlighted inactivity on one he still expects to, expressed frustration at injuries, invited senior players to return to training early, and questioned why supporters would pay to watch his team.

In a less well-publicised part of his news conference, he thanked defender Eric Bailly for stepping in to replace another senior player - Chris Smalling - at the weekend, then immediately rejected the Ivorian as a leader. Speaking to United's TV station, he accused new captain Antonio Valencia of returning from his summer break out of shape. In addition, he ridiculed the standard of a referee who gave two penalties against his team.

Wide-ranging is a good description.

The key point is this: does Mourinho harbour a growing sense of genuine unhappiness at all these supposed sources of irritation, is he trying to make points, or is he attempting to deflect attention from a heavy defeat at the hands of a major rival?

If it is the last of those, it is a long-established managerial tactic. The middle one could go either way. But if it is the former, then a stereotypical full-blown third-year explosion - the type Mourinho is always so quick to reject when asked about - is on the way.
Mourinho wants two signings, but only expects one
Is his relationship with the club strained?

There are two reactions to what Mourinho did on Saturday.

One is to raise an eyebrow, say it is typical of him, express sympathy with his situation and move on.

This is exactly what a number of influential people within the club are doing. After all, the Portuguese signed a new contract in January that not only improved his terms, but extended his tenure to 2020.

The relationship between Mourinho and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has repeatedly been described as strong by both men, so, presumably, potential conflict areas within summer transfer dealings would have been covered within the negotiations. It is also probable a vision for the short-term future would have been agreed. Why would that suddenly change because one transfer target was missed - which is only what has happened in the previous two summers?

An alternative view, and there are other long-standing United figures who are leaning towards this, is Mourinho wants out, and this is the start of his exit strategy.

One thing that is certain is that, for the first time in his illustrious managerial career, Mourinho will not have Rui Faria by his side this season.

The pair have been inseparable since Mourinho appointed Faria - a man he describes as "a brother" - assistant at Uniao Leiria in 2001.

However, last season, Faria - feeling he wasn't getting to see enough of his family and exhausted by the pressures of day-to-day involvement at the very top of the game - decided to take a break.

Mourinho has opted not to bring in a direct replacement. In Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna, he has added both a club stalwart who has huge knowledge of the game and an appetite to learn, and someone whose reputation at both United and previous club Tottenham is enormous.

Given United finished last season 19 points behind arch-rivals Manchester City - whose manager Pep Guardiola vies with Mourinho for the title of greatest manager of their generation - and have not done much to suggest the gap can be closed, Saturday's comments are being interpreted by those who have adopted the exit-strategy theory as the start of a long goodbye.
Are United at risk of falling behind their rivals?

United's only significant signing so far this summer has been Brazil midfielder Fred. Another central defender is expected, although who that is remains uncertain.

Nevertheless, both men will be among the top six most expensive players United have ever bought.

Of the other four, only Argentina forward Angel di Maria is no longer at the club. In midfielder Paul Pogba and forward Anthony Martial, two remain who have not come close to performing at their top level on a consistent basis.

Mourinho was not responsible for Martial's arrival from Monaco. His view is the Frenchman goes missing at key times, hence his keenness to sign Croatia's Ivan Perisic, both last summer and this, from Inter Milan.

The 55-year-old was responsible for Bailly, fellow defender Victor Lindelof and forward Alexis Sanchez - for a combined fee of just under £100m. They are yet to make a significant impact at Old Trafford.

At the same time, there is an element of the unknown about all United's major rivals.

Manchester City's only summer signing is Riyad Mahrez, an attacking player the champions arguably do not need. Tottenham have signed no-one yet. Arsenal's most expensive addition of the brief Unai Emery era so far is Uruguay midfielder Lucas Torreira who, at £26m, cost just over half the £47m United have spent on Fred. Chelsea did not even appoint their new manager, Maurizio Sarri, until after pre-season training had started.

Of all the major clubs, Liverpool are the ones who appear to have significant forward momentum. Yet three of their four major signings - midfielders Naby Keita and Fabinho, and goalkeeper Alisson - have never played in the Premier League before.

So, while it is easy to feel United are going backwards, it can be argued that if Mourinho gets more from the players he has already invested so much in, they won't be far away from the major prizes.
What does it mean for United's season?

As with all clubs, results can quickly change perceptions.

The Red Devils open the Premier League as a whole when they entertain Leicester on 10 August.

Mourinho has already highlighted how much easier the build-up to the new campaign has been for Foxes boss Claude Puel, given so few of his players were at the World Cup in Russia.

This is true. But Jamie Vardy and Harry Maguire were away with England until the semi-final stage, and Mahrez has been sold.

Will they cause an upset on the opening day? Perhaps not; it is so long since Leicester won at Old Trafford the match-winner, in 1998, was Tony Cottee.

The Foxes may have won the Premier League more recently than United, yet nothing that has happened since suggests they are close to the level Mourinho's side are capable of reaching on home soil.

After that, United have trips to Brighton and Burnley, who could be going into the game on the back of a sixth successive Thursday night appearance in the Europa League.

Between those two away fixtures is a Monday night date with Tottenham on 27 August. As well as not making a signing so far this summer, Spurs had eight players involved on the last weekend of the World Cup, compared to United's seven.

So of all the big clubs expected to be challenging for major honours, Spurs are arguably in an even worse situation than United when it comes to their preparation for what lies ahead.

As Arsenal have matches against Manchester City and Chelsea over the first two weekends, it leaves Liverpool as the only 'big-six' club who do not meet a rival before the first international break.

So, while Mourinho has legitimate grounds to grumble at the difficult build-up he is having to work around, most of his managerial adversaries are in a similar position.

By the time that Burnley trip is done and the top-flight season halts for its first international break, much more will be known about where United - and everybody else for that matter - actually are.

From there, Mourinho's pronouncements will have much more meaning.

We have been brainwashed by the Premier League that it's the best in the world. Nonsense. It's the best brand

With Ruis gone....our man is feeling naked and exposed. He is so afraid and does not appear to know what to do....may be just invite the board to sack him, collect his severance pay and melt into the skyline to enjoy his bounty. He probably does not need to work again.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Jose Mourinho is heading for the Sunshine State with Manchester United, but it might be time to be prepare for rain and storms when he arrives in Miami ahead of Tuesday's friendly against Real Madrid.

Nothing, it seems, can lighten the United manager's mood right now, and after his team suffered a 4-1 International Champions Cup defeat against Liverpool in Ann Arbor, Florida might want to brace itself for Hurricane Jose later this week.

He has cut an unhappy figure throughout United's two-week trip to the U.S., finding fault with an array of issues since arriving in California earlier this month.

And in Ann Arbor, he complained once again about the strength and depth of his tour squad and the lack of summer signings, the standard of the officials -- "baseball referees," Mourinho claimed -- and even questioned why more than 101,000 fans bothered to pay to watch this game between English football's two biggest clubs.

Mourinho is finding fault with everything but accepting responsibility for none of it, and it is beginning to wear thin.

Having been in charge for two years now, to suggest after this game that he learned nothing from it does not bode well for the young players in his squad who are attempting to persuade Mourinho they can have a future at Old Trafford during this tour.

Andreas Pereira, whose first-half free kick hauled United level following Sadio Mane's penalty opener, was impressive in midfield. Timothy Fosu-Mensah also suggested he could cover for the injured Antonio Valencia and Diogo Dalot at right-back.

Both players spent last season on loan at Valencia and Crystal Palace, respectively, but having said before the game that five of his starting lineup would be loaned out again, Mourinho's post-match comments suggested that neither even had a chance of persuading him that they can be valuable members of his squad this year.

Where Jurgen Klopp, the Liverpool manager, used his post-match news conference to praise the likes of Sheyi Ojo and Ben Woodburn as youngsters with a promising future, Mourinho could find nothing positive to say about United's emerging players.

"This is not our team, not our squad," he said. "We start the game with almost half of the players who aren't going to belong to our squad. This is not our squad. This is not even 30 percent of my squad, so don't look to this that way.

"In relation to today, we have four or five players that are dead because they care for the club, for the team, they try to give everything, even risking themselves because they don't want to let all the kids play by themselves against Milan, Liverpool and Real Madrid.

"So what did this game give me? Nothing at all."

Eric Bailly, according to Mourinho, raised his hand to step in at the last minute to "avoid a kid playing" after Chris Smalling signalled a pre-match injury.

But even the Ivorian centre-half was given faint praise, and a substantial dose of negativity, when Mourinho was asked if he had shown leadership.

"I don't think he's a leader," Mourinho said. "I don't think anything goes to change with that."But I think he's a team boy, a great boy, and an honest man -- honest to put everything for the team, and that is why we still have him and why he is going to stay with us, because football teams need people like him."

United have now played four games in the States and won only one of them -- on penalties against AC Milan. This Liverpool defeat will do little to boost confidence, especially with European champions Real next up in Miami.
The rest is here

I would trust Zidane to get way more from those players Mourinho spends every day criticizing to the press and playing mind games with than I trust Mourinho to get anything from.

My gosh, if they can get Zizou....nah not possible. I don't believe it's anything more than a silly rumour. But maannnn if that happens!!!

Not with the players JM was wasting money on.

Who is the new Man Utd assistant manager? I think Andreas Pereira has enough to be a first team player. Maybe not the marquee player, but he can do a good job for the team 20-30 games a season (like Fletch, Nani, Chicharito, Welbs, O'Shea, Brown used to do).

Zidane will be a dream come true for united fans due to his attacking qualities, just hope the united board are watching things with keen interest, what i dont like about Mourinho is the way he throws all his players under the bus, soon they will get fed up of him, will not be surprised if the likes of Pogba are trying to engineer a move away from united
So angry Nigeria got kicked out of the world cup once again, i nearly told my wife that i caught my girlfriend with another man today!

I figured the job went to Carrick.

MIAMI -- On the last of Manchester United's 17 nights in the United States, there was at last a shred of positivity.

A 2-1 win over European champions Real Madrid in Miami's Hard Rock Stadium added a bit of shine to a tour that has, for the most part, been played out under a cloud.

It started badly and, over the course of more than two weeks, gradually got worse.

First there was Alexis Sanchez, left at home while the rest of the squad flew to Los Angeles because of a visa issue. It was particularly unfortunate the news broke just hours after United's official website had published an article about how the Chile star would be ready to rediscover his best form after a first summer off since 2013 and a full preseason.

That was out of Mourinho's control.

What he could control, though, was the tone he set from the minute he got in front of the cameras.

His first news conference of the summer started with handshakes for the 10 English journalists who had followed the team across the Atlantic. It may seem like a small gesture, but it hasn't always happened and it felt to those in attendance that it might be a sign of the United's manager's improving mood.

Then he started talking.

Tough. Worried. Bad. Really bad -- just some of the words Mourinho used to describe a trip that had not even really begun.
Then it was on to Paul Pogba. The question was whether Mourinho was looking forward to welcoming back a player who should be full of confidence after winning the World Cup. But instead of saying yes and congratulating his man, he suggested the midfielder should think long and hard about what had made him successful in Russia.

He went further in an interview with ESPN FC a few days later, telling Pogba his performances for France had improved because he had been fully focused on football. The message was clear. No nightclubs, no entourage and no distractions equalled better football.

The uncertainty surrounding Anthony Martial's future caused another problem.

The France international has let it be known he wants to leave Old Trafford this summer. Sources have told ESPN FC Mourinho is willing to let him go, insisting he does not want players in his dressing room who do not want to be there.

Ed Woodward, meanwhile, is under no pressure to sell a 22-year-old with two years left on his contract who could go on to become one of the best players in the world.

Sources have told ESPN FC the differing stances has caused friction between the pair, as has their approach to transfers.

Mourinho wants two more players before the deadline -- a centre-back and a right winger -- but Woodward is working in a difficult summer complicated by the World Cup and a shorter window.

As rumours of growing tensions increased, a meeting between Woodward and the Manchester-based journalists on tour, scheduled for Miami the night before the Real Madrid game, was cancelled.

The traditional sit-down summer interview with the United manager also never happened -- only the third time in more than 20 years it has not gone ahead.

Woodward's official reason was his busy schedule. Mourinho claimed his decision was in response to a perceived lack of support from the press.

The official line from the communications department was that everything was fine -- that Mourinho was happy and smiling on the training pitch and around the team hotel. But that felt like a ruse.
Mourinho's unhappiness, at least in public, peaked in Ann Arbor.

After the heavy 4-1 defeat to Liverpool in Michigan, he hit out at newly appointed club captain Antonio Valencia by suggesting the calf injury that forced the Ecuadorian out of the tour had been caused because he had returned from his break out of shape. "Too much holiday," was the way it was worded.

Then, in an interview with in-house television channel MUTV at the Big House, he questioned why Martial had not returned to the U.S. following the birth of his son.

It was unprompted, and caused enough concern among United staff members that they wanted to check what was said before it was given the green light to be aired. In the end, a communication mix-up between the team in Michigan and the one in Manchester meant it went out straight away.

In other postmatch comments he said he did not know why American fans would pay to watch his depleted squad and said Eric Bailly was "not a leader."

The were plenty of other odd moments, too, like letting Chris Smalling stride up to take the decisive penalty in the shootout against AC Milan in Los Angeles before calling him back. Goalkeeper Joel Pereira stepped up instead and missed.

At the same time, Mourinho's injury list was growing by the day. Nemanja Matic was sent home after having surgery in Philadelphia for a hernia problem. Sources have told ESPN FC that the Serbian tried to play through the pain -- he trained once in L.A. -- until the medical staff accepted the problem would not get better on its own.

At Barry University in Florida, a day before the clash with Real Madrid, only five senior players -- Juan Mata, Fred, Luke Shaw, Matteo Darmian and Sanchez -- were able to train.

Darmian, who publicly admitted during a mixed zone interview that he wants to leave, had to start the final three games. Mourinho is willing to let him go, probably back to Italy, but wants reinforcements first and that is controlled by Woodward.

There was an awkward moment after the game against Real Madrid when United's executive vice-chairman was caught on video chasing Mourinho down the tunnel, shouting: "Jose, Jose". The embrace and brief conversation didn't look like two people on the same page, at least from the outside.
Rest is here

So I went to DC to attend Juve-Madrid and after the match, I noticed Allegri doesn't really speak English...but he kind of understands questions in English and apparently has been learning English.
Most of the Italian journos think it's just because he wants to communicate better with players but I think that's naive. I truly think he is positioning himself for a job in the Premier League and I can only see one top job most likely opening soon. United.

Hear me out.

Can't you see (Unless Mourinho wins the league this season) if United end up not winning anything and not going for in the CL or worse.. finishing lower than Liverpool in the league this season and Mourinho doing Mourinho things with the media, referees, opposing managers and his own players.... Mourinho and United parting ways. What top manager will be available?
Now consider...Juventus, Allegri will have his best chance to win the CL now he has Cristiano, a stronger backline, (weaker GK though) but if he fails to win it, how much longer will he keep trying at Juve? He has nothing to really gain in winning another Scudetto with them. No point going back to Milan. All the other top teams in Europe have new managers or managers they are happy with for now ...other than United.

Allegri....one of the managers out there to have coaxed the best out of Pogba....making the move to the Premier League and United.

And as for Juve? The return of Zinedine Zidane to manage the squad. More believable than Zidane going to United.

Am I crazy for thinking this or has anyone else thought this could/should happen?

You are right that JM will be out of job soon! United the likely club to drop out of the TOP 4! United may have to beg Alex to come back.

Not sure that Moyes will not even be a better option now for United :taunt:

Satire of the highest order (skysports.com):
“The players were, once more, brilliant. They could not have done better than what they did, fantastic experience for the boys.

"There was a moment I was looking to the area and there was Axel at centre-back to left, Demetri at left wing-back, Garner in midfield on the left and Chong. At the same time it was Lewandowski on Axel, Robben on Mitchell, (Leon) Goretzka on Garner and (Niklas) Sule on Chong”.

"It was fantastic, absolutely fantastic“.
