UEFA Champions & Europa league watching info for US Cybers

Post by F360 »

Good luck to Arsenal and Chelsea fans in America. Turner have decided to stick it to soccer fans in America...all to recoup the costs they spent buying the rights and also to make people use their streaming service. Ridiculous crap.

Turner Broadcasting announced the pricing options for its new streaming service, which will be the primary avenue to watch the Champions League in the U.S. Unfortunately, the Bleacher Report Live cost is not cheap.

Having acquired the U.S. Champions League and Europa League TV rights from Fox, Turner is looking to bolster Bleacher Report Live, which launched earlier this year, by putting most of the UEFA matches on the streaming service instead of TV. The broadcaster announced the Bleacher Report Live cost for a la carte options and subscriptions on Tuesday.

Turner has branded its UEFA content B/R Football, despite the Champions League (and Europa League) only being available in the U.S. through this platform, giving a giant middle finger to everyone who calls it soccer.

Here are the Bleacher Report Live cost breakdowns for every option:

Single match — $2.99
Month subscription — $9.99
Year subscription — $79.99
So yeah, it’s not gonna be cheap — especially when you consider how many matches will be available on TV and the cost of other similar offerings. ESPN+, which has nearly every MLS and every USL match, is just $4.99 per month. The Bleacher Report Live cost is essentially the same as a Netflix subscription, and Netflix offers far more shows.
Initial reports suggested Turner had planned to put all matches until the semifinals on truTV. Fortunately, the company has opted to put every match that’s on TV on TNT, its flagship cable channel.

Unfortunately, of the more than 340 Champions League and Europa League matches Turner has the rights to, only 47 matches will be broadcast on cable TV. The remaining 300 or so will only be available on Bleacher Report Live.

Here’s how Turner will treat the Champions League broadcasts:

During the group stage, four matches per week will be on TNT at 1 p.m. EST and 3 p.m. EST on Tuesdays and Wednesdays
All group-stage matches will be available on B/R Live
TNT will broadcast two matches per week during the Round of 16, quarterfinals and semifinals (with the other matches on B/R Live)
TNT will broadcast the final on June 1
TNT will also broadcast the UEFA Super Cup between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid on Aug. 15.

The one advantage to this lineup is cable subscribers will be able to watch a match during every time slot while cord-cutters who only subscribe to B/R Live will have access to every single match, even those on TV.

Turner has promised pregame, halftime, midgame and postgame shows throughout the Champions League coverage, on both TNT and B/R Live. Per a Turner news release:

B/R Football Matchday: One-hour pre-match show airing at noon ET on UEFA Champions League match days
B/R Football Halftime: Halftime show during UEFA Champions League matches
B/R Football Extra Time: A bridge show airing on TNT in between UEFA Champions League matches
B/R Football Postmatch: A 30-minute post-match show recapping the day’s UEFA Champions League action
That’s a solid lineup, though it remains to be seen what kind of analysts Turner hires. So far, only Kate Abdo and former basketball player Steve Nash have been confirmed for B/R Football.

The aforementioned press release did say more programming information will be announced leading up to the group stage, so expect more hires to be made public soon.

As for the Europa League, Chelsea and Arsenal fans may be getting the shaft. None of the Europa League matches will be on TV except for the final on May 29, which will be on B/R Live and TNT.

If you want to watch the Europa League all the way through, you’re going to have to pay for at least nine months of B/R Live subscriptions, which means you may as well pay the $80 for a year’s worth.

It’s a shame the Bleacher Report Live cost is so high, but at least TNT will be broadcasting as many matches as Fox and ESPN did in the past (aided by an additional time slot each day through the group stage). Being able to choose matches a la carte is nice, but at $3 a pop, it’s more expensive than we would prefer.

Again, it remains to be seen how Turner treats its coverage. We at The18 hope they go the route of NBC with smart, thoughtful commentary instead of the route of Fox, with basic, trivial commentary.

The UEFA Champions League is moving from Fox Sports to Turner Sports this season, so fans will have to get used to a new viewing channel and new (pay) viewing options.

TNT will air 46 UEFA Champions League games, and more than 340 games will be streamed on Bleacher Report Live -- Turner’s new premium live sports streaming service -- behind a paywall and available on an individual ($2.99), monthly ($9.99) or annual ($79.99) basis.
More group stage windows. The first year of TNT coverage comes as UEFA modifies its schedule for the group stage, kicking off two games each day on the six matchdays at 12:55 p.m. ET and the remaining six at 3 p.m. ET.

U.S. viewers will be available to watch two games on TNT each match day during the group stage. All games during the knockout stage will kick off at 3 p.m. ET, so fans will only have access to one of the two games played each day during the round of 16 and quarterfinals on TNT. They will have to go to B/R Live for the other match.

Fox Sports spread its coverage over FS1, FS2, Fox Deportes and ESPN Deportes, which sub-licensed games from Fox Sports, giving viewers access to as many as four games being played at the same time, depending on the networks they received.

UCL matches on TNT:
Super Cup: 1 match.
Playoffs: 4 matches.
Group Stage: 24 matches.
Round of 16: 8 matches.
Quarterfinals: 4 matches.
Semifinals: 4 matches.
Final: 1 match.

August appetizer. TNT's coverage will kick off on Aug. 15 with the UEFA Super Cup – Real Madrid vs. Atletico Madrid – followed by four matches in the Champions League playoff rounds Aug. 21-22 and Aug. 28-29.

Four studio shows. TNT and B/R Live will also air four studio shows each Champions League matchday:

B/R Football Matchday: A one-hour pre-game show airing at noon ET;
B/R Football Halftime: A halftime show during matches;
B/R Football Extra Time: A bridge show airing on TNT in between matches during the group stage;
B/R Football Postmatch: A 30-minute post-game show recapping the day’s action.

Kate Abdo, a World Cup studio host for Fox Sports during the World Cup, will be the studio host, working alongside former NBA star Steve Nash, who will be the studio analyst.

if they only have rights to the europa league and champions league then it's not worth it. FOXSoccer2go was about $120 but they also streamed FIFA tournaments and the Bundesliga

Same in Canada.

TSN nor Sportsnet nor BEIN sports have rights to CL or Europa league.

CL and Europa league rights in Canada were bought by online stream service DAZN.

It's even dumber when you consider if you only give me online pay stream as an option I can easily find free stream if I so choose.

It's akin to putting all ones eggs in the DVD business model, it's beyond antiquated.

79.99 isn't really bad considering NBCSports Gold package was $49.99 and it was total crap.

Not bad on it's own but all that stuff adds up, just four years ago with a regular cable sports package I could have all the major leagues available to watch on TV today we have to buy 20 different packages.

:taunt: You are helping create billionaires and millionaires.

Seriously, I doubt I want to ever buy any more sports packages, NBCSports opened my eyes last season.

I invited them into my purse and they gladly accepted the invite.
First thing I did when I got their notice of renewal was to disable the auto-renewal feature. Those guys are something else.

I hear Univision also has UEFA CL and EL rights and matches will be on their Univision Deportes network as opposed to behind some streaming service paywall. So if you're alright watching with Spanish commentary(tbh that's way better than some of the commentary we get on some of these American networks) then Univision might be the one to watch

http://worldsoccertalk.com/2017/08/17/u ... s-paywall/
In light of the announcement by Turner Sports where 80% of Champions League and Europa League games won’t be available on television beginning with the 2018/19 season, Univision Deportes is poised to attract English-language soccer fans who will watch games in Spanish to avoid having to pay the subscription fee to access Turner’s paid streaming service.

As the Spanish-language network has shown in its coverage of the World Cup, Liga MX and MLS, they are able to utilize multiple channels and social media platforms to increase the availability and accessibility for matches. Most importantly, Univision has also been able to garner a lot of English-speaking soccer fans who have gravitated to their coverage even when games are available in English.

While Turner Sports hasn’t made any decisions regarding who they will hire as commentators, analysts or presenters, we do know that Univision Deportes has a long history of understanding the passion and culture of soccer fans in the United States, no matter what language they speak.

“Soccer is the lifeblood of our community and we plan to serve our soccer fans in a way that allows for them to bring that passion to life on all platforms,” said a spokeswoman for Univision Deportes. “We have more soccer rights than any other U.S. media company along with the best teams in the world on the best multi platforms – all of which make UCI the undisputed home of soccer.” HomeLeagues: Champions LeagueUnivision Deportes poised to attract Champions League viewers turned off by Turner’s paywall

Considering that none of the Europa League games will be on television via Turner except for the final, if UEFA Europa League games are shown live on Univision Deportes network, this could significantly impact the bottom line for Turner Sports when it attempts to sell its OTT sports platform to soccer fans. This could prove to be a gateway for Univision’s networks, particularly Univision Deportes, to gain new viewers among English-language dominant soccer fans.

Given the emphasis Univision places on the sport of soccer and the types of personalities they have broadcasting the matches, the decision by Turner to place about half the UEFA Champions League matches and all but one of the matches in UEFA Europa League behind a paywall is a massive opportunity for the network.

Univision’s target audience has expanded to including English-language dominant individuals and the millennial bilingual audience. It’s that millennial audience that Turner plans on targeting with its efforts That could prove a boon to Univision who may find that the availability of their products including via streaming services such as fuboTV, DIRECTV NOW and Sling TV may give them a leg up on trying to compete for that audience that might prefer to watch matches in English but does understand Spanish.

The fragmentation of content across different platforms and different TV companies is a serious issue. If you wanted ALL marquee football content in the US, you'd need to get/have:

NBC - EPL
beIN Sports - La Liga, Serie A, French Ligue 1, AFCON, Copa America
ESPN - FA Cup
ESPN3 - League Cup
Turner - Champions League
Fox - Europa League

To get all those networks, you often need to subscribe to a very expensive cable TV package. Plus Fox, NBC, Turner, and beIN have some of their tournaments behind a paywall. Meaning that you may have to pay about $100 just to have cable, then additional amounts to get the packages that have premium sports networks, then additional one off payments of $50 here and there for additional streaming apps and services like Fox Soccer Plus, Fox Soccer 2 Go, Fox soccer Match Pass, beIN Sports Connect, beIN Sports Connect Plus, Bleacher Report etc.

Some options for you guys...

Last ACN, a friend got an online subscription to Bein that allowed him to stream coverage on his tv, phone, laptop, etc. He let me use his account and the quality was superb. I'm not sure how much they charge and what leagues they offer but its worth considering.

IPTV is also available but keep in mind its illegal. Essentially you get a receiver (they're really cheap; about $100) and then get an online subscription that will cost about $10-15 USD per month on average (you pay for either 1 month; 6 months; 12 months, etc). You'll get hundreds or thousands of channels including all the footy ones. Again, its illegal and the channels buffer every so often but its something that more and more people have turned to.
