DR Congo Ibenge coach asked to win 2019 AFCON or resign

DR Congo coach Florent Ibenge has been handed a four-month extension and tasked with winning the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt or be axed from the job.
The 57-year-old coach, who also manages local top-flight Vita Club, had been criticised by the country’s football officials and fans for the ‘lack of progress’ of the national team.
However, the qualification to the upcoming AFCON doused the pressure on the coach but that could only be temporary.
“We have decided to give Mr Ibenge and his collaborators a four-month extension with the objective of winning the 2019 AFCON. If the objective is not met, we would unfortunately part ways with the coach and his staff,” Barthelemey Okito, secretary of the ministry of sports said on Tuesday.
Ibenge responded moments later, describing the objective as ‘too high’, considering the quality of the players in his current team.
“With the quality of players we have, how do we work with such objective? It’s not fair to put such high pressure on the players. We will go to Egypt and do our best,” he said.
The draw for the tournament will be held in Cairo on Friday.

How is this any different from the hyperbole that typifies many people commenting here?
African's act as if winning tournaments is all about will power, rather than patience and preparation.

Zambia is an aberation just like Greece. My point is, they should set a realistic goal. CongoDR is not a powerhouse in Africa at the moment. So setting a goal of win or sack is unreasonable.ohenhen1 wrote:If Zambia can win Afcon, Dr Congo can win Afcon.Cito wrote:They should have tasked him with manufacturing players.ohenhen1 wrote:He has been in charge since 2014. 5 years is enough.
A semi will be a more realistic goal.

IMHO, medal stage (semi finals) should be the goal for all power houses in Africa (including Nigeria) with the exception of Egypt which has the home advantage. For Egypt, the goal is definitely win or bust.

Well he will quit then. DRC is good by African standards but most likely not good enough to win the ANC

According to you're logic the same goes for about ten African nations, can all nations where such logic applies win it all at the same time?ohenhen1 wrote:If Zambia can win Afcon, Dr Congo can win Afcon.Cito wrote:They should have tasked him with manufacturing players.ohenhen1 wrote:He has been in charge since 2014. 5 years is enough.

Exactly. If Congo DR was the host, that may make a bit more sense to set such lofty goal too.Enugu II wrote:Cito,Cito wrote:Zambia is an aberation just like Greece. It's kinda strange that DRC have always been perennial dark houses despite the exciting brand of football and talents at their disposal. Maybe they are just one of those teams that have the "Netherland" curse of always coming close to, yet far from finish line... another team like that is Senegal(only clear favorites who are yet to win a gold trophy in modern times)...meanwhile Ghana is now officially the "almost there" team.

WHy is this a problem? An employer does not have the right to tell you what your targets are? Its quite simple. If he cannot meet the target set for him, he should resign.YemiBrazil wrote: Africans drink too much umqombothi

Thats not his job. He was hired to win titles. If he cannot win titles, he should resign.Cito wrote:They should have tasked him with manufacturing players.ohenhen1 wrote:He has been in charge since 2014. 5 years is enough.
I dont understand why people find a problem with Congo stating their target?

LMAO @ lofty goals. Some people show up to win, others show up to participate. DRC has made it clear that they are showing up to win! Doesnt mean they will win, but it means that is their goal. If the coach is too afraid to meet it, he should resign now!
Not everybody is like Nigeria, who will permit its coach to go to a tournament to learn. Nonsense!

That's fine but expect no serious manager to take the job, although winning should be your goal expect everyone else to want the same, they should have told him this before the qualifiers not 2 months before the tournament.danfo driver wrote:Thats not his job.
