Akpeyi is to blame for the goal. At this level, such an elementary mistake is unpardonable .What is the point of arranging the defensive wall and then standing behind the wall? There was another Nigerian player lying on the ground to ensure no grounder would be played. All Akpeyi had to do was to stand in the line of sight of the ball. Instead he voluntarily blocked his view which made too easy for Mehrez to score

...the camera angle made it seem so, he was actually looking at the ball, and was expecting the ball be floated in thru the last man on the wall, note not Etebo who was standing wide right.
Marez being a he is, pro from top club, top league, and have seen many FKs taken by the real experts, spotted a weakness, a gap, again not the gap between Etebo and the last man on the wall, but the gap to Etebo's right. The Algerian chose that since he knew Apkeyi was hoping the ball will float in from the created gap from where he was looking at the ball.
But alas, Marez went further to his left with a hard and fast sweeping curler, that by the time it cleared Etebo, Apkeyi was caught off guard, did not dive, because he was expecting a different trajectory from the last man on wall.
Poor decision on him. Fine kick by the taker.

In 1992 Nations cup, Westerhof stubbornly fielded another bad goalkeeper, Aloy Agu. Nigeria had the best outfielders except a goalkeeper. Nigerians protested fielding Aloy Agu, but Westerhof ignored us and we lost the semi final to Ghana in a match that we dominated and should have won. Uzoho was good at the World Cup. His positioning Influenced the Iceland forward to miss the penalty. He saved a difficult free kick against Argentina. Either Uzoho or Ezenwa should be our goalkeeper going forward. Prior to the mistake, Akpeyi punched a shot he should have saved to an Algerian player. But got away with it. In a friendly match with Argentina, he handled a ball outside the box with his hands . These kinds of mistakes should not be made by a Nigerian goalkeeper.
The defeat will be a blessing in disguise if the coach drops Akpeyi. Akpeyi should not even be on the bench. That is how bad he is.

Akpeyi is better than Uzoho, this is a fact. When was the last time Uzoho played a competitive match for his club?

We should be looking at young talented GK's like the Arsenal kid, not freaking Akpeyi and Ezenwa.

Akpeyi made a horrible mistake by not cheating more to the right. Mahrez would not have attempted to hit the gap to the right of Akpeyi if there wasn’t so much space there. He would have tried to dip it over the wall to Akpeyi’s left - a much more difficult shot.

I guess the disgrace Tammy Abraham gave is not yet enough. Look inwards, first.

For a guy like Mahrez...that was a simple skill. Tbh, I kinda knew Akpeyi had one horrible mistake in him so I wasn't surprised or upset. This was a failure of management rather than the goalie.

Thus, finally Akpeyi killed us, eh? How about the coaching crew who for years continued to invite Akpeyi? Did they not know Akpeyi's capability? It seems every team we played knew Nigeria has no goalkeeper, except the coaches of our team and if so, why blame Akpeyi?

Just one of those things. Karl Ikeme got sick and we never got someone really competent. It would have hurt me more if we played a good game, but as we were more or less outplayed by ALgeria, I wasn't bothered.

Na waoo! So listening to Odegbami's take should be the compelling argument? I need better than that. I have Sked for someone with technical ability to post a whatsapp video here. No takers. In any case, I give up and move to other matters. Believe what you want to believe on who should be at fault. What I was seeking is a deeper examination of the videos in comparison with videos of similar free kick goals scored by likes of Messi, etc. I now understand that we are not ready to go there.
The difficulties of statistical thinking describes a puzzling limitation of our mind: our excessive confidence in what we believe we know, and our apparent inability to acknowledge the full extent of our ignorance and the uncertainty of the world we live in. Within 10 minutes into the game, I became very nervous watching it because the ball was continuously in our part of the field and each time the Algerians had the ball, it seemed they will score.

Thus, you are correct bro, everybody who saw the match knew Algeria was better. I thought come second half, we will switch to our 3-5-2, a formation no team has survived, but I was wrong, we continued playing the same way as in first half which didn't work and never worked

...thank you. For a player like Mahrez, he spotted the gap. Given the positioning of the fk spot, very well placed for a left footer.
It was terrible mistake. Anyway, shiiit will always happen. We swallow the bitter pill and move on.
