Awaziem in action

Post by Gadfly »

I was not surprised to see Awaziem in the defensive midfield position yesterday versus Real Madrid. Since I started watching him three years ago, I have long had the opinion that he will make a better defensive midfield player than as a central defender. Although he had some wayward passes in the first twenty minutes, as the game went on, he played like a veteran in that position in the second half. If he stays there, he will make a nice compliment to Ndidi, perhaps allowing Nigeria to experiment with Ayo's 3-5-2.

For example:
--------------------------- G ---------------------------------
--------------- Troost ----------Omeruo -----------Semi----
------------------------ Awaziem ---------- Ndidi -----------
------Chuks/Simon -----Iwobi/Aribo -------Kalu/Aribo/Simon---
-----------------------Ahmed/Kalu ---- Osihem-------------------

You do realize his team lost 5-0 right? Awazeim's best position is as a CD. Can he offer something better or different from what Ndidi, Aribo, and Etebo offer? For him to play that position for us, he either has to be able to win more tackles and break up more plays than Ndidi, or be better going forward than Aribo or Etebo.

Omeruo looked completely out of his depth in this game... in fact he was embarrassingly poor

Omeruo. Can he play against worldclass strikers? He seems prone to mistakes in big games.

Real scored after two minutes and scored again soon after and we’re leading 3nil by halftime. The less said about Nigeria’s defensive duo in this game the better.

Omero is too error prone. He does a wonderful job and then he has this loss of concentration and does something stupid! Remember how he was doing "follow me run my race" with Messi at last world cup.

But did he make any specific errors in this game or was it a collective failure?

That second half Real penalty looks like a dive to me.
Omeruo didn't touch him when he went down.

But it can be argued that Omeruo lost his man for the first two goals.
