Ramy Bensebaini's Borussia Monchenglach stuttered again in their bid for a first German Bundeliga title since 1977, and they head into the Christmas break in second place on the ladder, two points behind unlikely leaders RB Leipzig.
Bensebaini, an Africa Cup of Nations winner with Algeria in July, has been one of the division's standout defenders this term, and he rounded off the year with a clean sheet in an otherwise disappointing 0-0 draw at midtable Hertha Berlin.
Christopher Nkunku, meanwhile, has been a driving force for Leipzig during their fine first half to the season, the Franco-Congolese midfielder adapting seamlessly to life in Germany after signing from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.
He contributed a 79th-minute assist for Patrik Schick as Julian Nagelsmann's side closed 2019 with a 3-1 victory over Augsburg at the Red Bull Arena, and created a game-high six goalscoring chances.
Bayern Munich had wonderkid Joshua Zirkzee to thank for breaking the deadlock in the 85th minute at home against Wolfsburg, with the 18-year-old doubling down on the his impact off the bench against Freiburg on Wednesday.
Netherlands-born Zirkzee, who is of Nigerian origin, replaced Philippe Coutinho and required just four minutes to bag his second Bundesliga goal after being picked out, in the centre of the box, by Thomas Muller.
"I just told him to get into dangerous areas, which is his strength," Bayern coach Hansi Flick told the club's official website after the match. "He certainly has the coolness, but it's about developing him, just like it is with the other players."
Bundesliga action resumes on Jan. 17, with Gladbach facing another stern test away at Schalke 04.
