Gary Neville advises Ole Gunnar Solskjaer against £20m Odion Ighalo transfer
Manchester United legend Gary Neville has advised Ole Gunnar Solskjaer against the purchase of Odion Ighalo this summer as he doubts the Nigerian is worth £20million. The 30-year-old signed for United on deadline day in January in a shock loan move from Shanghai Shenhua and the move drew criticism, particularly as Solskjaer had been keen on Norwegian wonderkid Erling Haaland.
However, Ighalo silenced his doubters with a string of fine performances for his boyhood club and Solskjaer is keen to make the move a permanent one after the Nigerian scored four goals in eight appearances.
But that decision was made before the coronavirus pandemic hit and club finances are set to be hit in a way they never have before this summer.
With purse strings tightening across Europe, Neville doubts United can afford to spend £20m on a back-up forward and he’s told Solskjaer to back out of a move.
Speaking on Instagram Live, Neville answered a question on Ighalo’s future.
‘Is ighalo worth £20m?’ said Neville.
‘Probably not in this market. He may have been if he continued before scoring goals but you probably don’t need now to spend £20m’.
United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward insisted last month that the club are not immune from the financial impact of the virus and said there will be implications at Old Trafford like there will be elsewhere. Solskjaer is keen on signing £120m-rated Dortmund star Jadon Sancho as well as Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish but Woodward says talk of big money transfers are unrealistic.

Gary Neville is trying to prove his wayward analysis right
Re: Gary Neville advises Solskjaer against £20m Ighalo trans
More a financial perspective and perhaps due to Ighalo's age. Not so much on Ighalo's abilities. Ighalo can move to Arsenal but his style might be too similar to Lacazette's. Arsenal's policy about over 30's is a hindrance.

Ighalo should move to other clubs and have an opportunity to prove Neville wrong and regret their decision against him.

Why do you guys think it's the player's decision where he plays?Igugu wrote:Ighalo should move to other clubs and have an opportunity to prove Neville wrong and regret their decision against him.
A club should first want his services

It's a lot to pay for a striker of his age. Shevchenko at a point was one of the best strikers in the world so 30 million for him may have been worth it.

Ballon d'Or winner and one of the top 3 scorers in Champions League history (at the time) Shevchenko is who you are comparing Odion to?Bigpokey24 wrote:Shevchenko cost Chelsea 30 million when he was 30 years old....

you guys are deliberately overlooking his comment "Probably not in this market"?
With the way covid-19 has disrupted and affected all clubs finances he is saying they should probably be able to get him for much less.

Don’t rationalize nonsense; why not rationalize the fact that they uprooted him and coerced him into a pay-cut and subsequent decline of $400k a week offer by his parent club. Mere $20 million is the least they could do for all iggys sacrificed to play for them. He brings much more into a locker room full of kids who have won nothingheavyd wrote:you guys are deliberately overlooking his comment "Probably not in this market"?

"It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is. If the--if he--if 'is' means is and never has been, that is not--that is one thing. If it means there is none, that was a completely true statement....Now, if someone had asked me on that day, are you having any kind of sexual relations with Ms. Lewinsky, that is, asked me a question in the present tense, I would have said no. And it would have been completely true."

Covid-19 and financial uncertainty of immediate future means clubs will be more frugal

A club that paid £80 million for a less than impressive Harry Maguire shouldn’t consider spending a mere €20 million fo Ighalo. That makes a lot of sense
Cheers.
Cheers.
Re: Gary Neville advises Solskjaer against £20m Ighalo trans
Since the club's new M.O. is to sign new young players with a high potential (AWB, Martial, James, Shaw), Ighalo does not fit that mould. Timo Werner (pace to burn) would be a better long term option. If they want to go with another short term option (if Greenwood is THE plan for the future), then Cavani could do a job for 1-2 seasons until Greenwood is ready.
