Austrian champions RB Salzburg sign Golden Eaglets captain
By Agencies - July 17, 2020, today.ng

Nigerian U17 captain Samson Tijani has joined Austrian champions RB Salzburg on a five-year contract, the club confirmed.

Tijani, who led the Golden Eaglets to the 2019 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations in Tanzania and the Fifa U-17 World Cup in Brazil, joins Die Mozartstadter from Lagos-based outfit Collins Edwin Sports Club.

The 18-year-old’s contract is expected to run until May 31, 2025 and he joins a host of African stars in Jesse Marsch’s team, which include Ghana’s Majeed Ashimeru, Cameroon’s Jerome Onguene, Mali duo Sekou Koita and Mohamed Camara, and Zambia duo Patson Daka and Enock Mwepu.

“I am so grateful to sign for Red Bull Salzburg,” Tijani said.

“I hope the fans will support us and be with us in this journey, which will not be easy.”

Tijani will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Borussia Dortmund talisman Erling Haaland as well Liverpool duo Naby Keita and Sadio Mane who developed their game in Salzburg.

The defensive midfielder helped the Golden Eaglets to a fourth-place finish at the U17 Afcon last April where they bowed to Angola in the third-place playoff.

During Nigeria’s U17 World Cup campaign in Brazil, he played every minute of the country’s games and produced a man-of-the-match performance in their first group outing by scoring a brace in their 4-2 victory against Hungary.

Manu Garba’s side were eliminated from the World Cup in the Round of 16 after a 3-1 defeat to the Netherlands.

Tijani is the latest player from the Golden Eaglets to move to Europe with teammate Peter Olawale set to decide on his future when the ban on international flights in Nigeria is lifted ahead of his 18th birthday on July 26.

Good move. That Red Bull global machine certainly have an eye for talent. If he does well at Salzburg then Leipzig might be the next stop.

Gotti,

The big surprise is that any of these guys made it to Europe??? If you remember, we had guys on this site claiming that none of these boys will ever get to Europe because they were poorly groomed by Nigerian coaches. I wonder where those numerous naysayers are today? The point is that the talent groomed in Nigeria will continue to emerge in the foreseeable future. The revolving belt is far from broken.
The difficulties of statistical thinking describes a puzzling limitation of our mind: our excessive confidence in what we believe we know, and our apparent inability to acknowledge the full extent of our ignorance and the uncertainty of the world we live in. We are prone to overestimate how much we understand about the world and to underestimate the role of chance in events -- Daniel Kahneman (2011), Winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics

To the best of my knowledge only Tijani and Amoo have made it to "lesser" leagues in Europe which may say something about the quality of that team. None of that set have moved to big clubs like previous U17 sets. That being said Tijani and Amoo could move on to bigger clubs in the future.

I think you mean Wisdom (Ubani)...
Divine was brought in from the U15 squad and was mainly a sub.

Wisdom was injured for several months...
Seemed half-fit for the WC and barely made an impression in Brazil.

Saw him play in a league game against Cashpoint SCR Altach (yes that really is the name of a football team!). He impressed as a DM pivot at the base of midfield.

Not afraid to receive the ball, good movement, and plays it simple. The mitigating factors are that he came on as a substitute to play against a demoralised opponent that was already 0–3 down and bottom of the league. He is also physically diminutive and I do not know how he would get on if put up against some of the midfield giant trees produced by the likes of Cameroon.
