If we lose in Freetown on Tuesday Rohr simply has to go
Jo Bonfere was sacked after losing in Freetown and I think it is only fair that Gernot Rohr suffers the same fate if the Eagles lose in Sierra Leone on Tuesday. Yesterday’s game proves that Rohr’s best days are behind him
Ayo Akinfe
(1) Unlike many Eagles fans, I am not actually surprised our boys surrendered a four goal lead yesterday against Sierra Leone. Recent draws against Ukraine, Brazil and Tunisia have shown that this team is incapable of game management
(2) It is standard convention that when you are in the lead and in control of a match, you take the sting out of the game. You reduce the tempo, keep hold of the ball, knock it around and turn the match into a borefest
(3) Gernot Rohr appears not to understand this basic tactic. In none of these matches mentioned above did he solidify his midfield to frustrate the opposition and prevent them getting hold of the ball when his team was defending a lead
(4) If you look at all Rohr’s substitutions yesterday, they were all like-for-like. Not one of them was tactical or game-changing. Sheer ignorance of the modern game of you ask me
(5) When your team is on the back foot and defending a slender lead, when the likes of Osimhen, Chukwueze and Musa come off, they should be replaced by ball-holding midfielders who can keep the ball and stifle the play
(6) My biggest beef with Rohr is his attachment to certain players irrespective of form. This meant that he had to play the likes of Ahmed Musa, Paul Onuachu and Kelechi Iheanacho despite having better alternatives available to him
(7) More criminally, he wasted his substitutions yesterday with decisions that just dumbfound me. If the team is playing Kevin Akpoguma out of position at rightback, when Leon Balogun went off, why not move Kevin into the centre and bring on a natural rightback like Ebuehi or Aina to shore up that flank?
(8) Because Rohr had to inexplicably start the clubless and match-rusty Ahmed Musa, he needlessly wasted a substitution replacing him. Is Rohr really trying to tell us that Musa performed better than Chidera Ejuke in training to merit selection ahead of him?
(9) Other examples of Rohr’s total loss of capacity for the job are his lack of understanding of what midfielders he needs. Players like Kelechi Nwakali and Ramon Azeez who know how to keep the ball were not even in camp. Instead, Rohr invited the below-par Shehu Abdullahi who he knew he would never use. Our last two friendlies against Algeria and Tunisia should have been used to cement the places of Nwakali and Azeez in the team. Just imagine how they would have stifled the midfield yesterday had they come on at half time
(10) We play the return leg in Freetown on Tuesday. If we lose that match as Jo Bonfere did on 2001, I believe the only honourable course of action left for Gernot Rohr is to resign. He actually reminds me of Father Tiko who was a great coach but after his 0-1 loss to Algeria in the 1977 All African Games final, it became clear he was past his sell-by date

Rohr what you jou just stated is not a revelation. It is a fact but Nigeria will not lose in Freetown to that team. We will win that game. Take that t I the bank.

Re: If we lose in Freetown on Tuesday Rohr simply has to go
Just imagine how yesterday's game would have ended if Rohr had brought on the following at halftime:
Yusuf Alhassan
Kelechi Nwakali
Ramon Azeez
Personally, I think he no longer has it in him to make such tactical game-changing switches. He reminds me of Terry Venables and George Graham two of the greatest ever managers in the English game but alas, they got to a stage in their careers when they were past it.
Have you not all noticed that these days, Rohr only makes like-for-like substitutions? Compare it with the way he switched from 4-3-3 to 3-5-2 at Wembley against England when he brought on John Ogu at halftime and totally changed the dynamics of the game.
This was two years ago. However, I fear that Gernot Rohr is gone forever.

Re: If we lose in Freetown on Tuesday Rohr simply has to go
Ramon Azeez hasn't played for his club for several weeks due to injury.
Re: If we lose in Freetown on Tuesday Rohr simply has to go
It's obvious that Rohr needs help. He has done a lot in bringing professionalism into the preparation of the team and getting foreign born players to commit to Nigeria. So we should be careful about throwing away the baby with the bath water. It's obvious by now that he doesn't know how to read a game, his substitutions are always, late, ineffective and like for like. He also doesn't know how to close up a match and grind out a result. This was obvious was the world cup match against Argentina, where Nigeria was under constant pressure and players were getting tired and he didn't do anything until it was too late. This scenario repeated itself in the 2019 AFCON against South Africa, where we were bailed out by a late goal by Ekong and it repeated itself against Algeria where tiring midfielders Etebo and Ndidi were kept on despite the pressure. We saw it again against Ukraine where a 2 goal lead was thrown away within 5 minutes. It happened again yesterday against Sierra Leone. There's an obvious pattern and it will continue until we can get a capable assistant that can read the game for him. I can go on and on but it's important that the NFF get quality help for him
I am happy

I can bet you SE will not win in SL.
You need a mentally strong team to get a result there.
SE teams in the past have struggled.

Re: If we lose in Freetown on Tuesday Rohr simply has to go
The SL team grew in confidence as the game progressed, they saw our weaknesses and exploited it. Our defending of 3 of the 4 goals was shambolic. It was just poor positional play and ball watching. Our m/f has always been a problem, since Mikel hanged his boots we have nobody in this team that can hold the ball, spray passes and dictate the pace of the game. No leader on the pitch or a player who can read the riot act to the players in the dressing room and on the pitch.
If the boys are up for it, we could win it by a slim margin 2-1. That said, I will not be surprised if we salvage a draw. This is African football were reputations mean nothing on the field of play.

Dammy, you keep saying Rohr needs help.
What kind of help does an old dog need?
He is so bereft of ideas it not even funny anymore!!!
What is his plan???

I get the feeling Rohr doesn't even select the team. Perhaps someone wants PMB to be happy watching an out of form musa captaining the SE.
WE ARE ALL TOGETHER!!

Nigeria will win by at least 3 goals margin in Sierra Leone. But that will not change anything about Rohrs coaching ability. The bottomline is, he is not going to improve from what he has shown in the past 4 years. So we as a nation have to decide if his best effort, which he has shown the past 4 years is what we want.
The Lord is my Shepherd. I shall not be in want.
Re: If we lose in Freetown on Tuesday Rohr simply has to go
While I agree with your prediction of a win, as far as Nigerian administrators are concerned Rohr is the greatest thing since Amala (Na me talk am). The fact that he has taken the team to AFCON qualification once is a great example of his quality (LOL).1naija wrote:Nigeria will win by at least 3 goals margin in Sierra Leone. Something tells me they are forcing Rohr to play and include northerners.DIMKA76 wrote:I get the feeling Rohr doesn't even select the team. Perhaps someone wants PMB to be happy watching an out of form musa captaining the SE.
Musa, Shehu, and now Zaidu.
Zaidu is somewhat deserved although I still believe Aina is better than him.
For all Rohrs talk of having a natural left back, why is he also not concerned with having A NATURAL RIGHT BACK.
Something ain't right.

Unfortunately quota system will remain a mainstay of Nigeria's problem... even the innocence of football can't be spared of the filthy practice of forcing crap footballers down our throats cause they meet a certain ethnic or political "requisite"vancity eagle wrote:Something tells me they are forcing Rohr to play and include northerners.DIMKA76 wrote:I get the feeling Rohr doesn't even select the team. Why do you make this outlandish statement? What exactly makes you think those players are less deserving than others? This is absolutely ridiculous.

Re: If we lose in Freetown on Tuesday Rohr simply has to go
people still make these decisions based on one game? No wonder Nigeria is a dump when its citizens act rashly!
Even if we win 30-0, the question that needs to be asked is simple-- in the last 4 years, has **** shown anything which tells us that he is capable of taking the Super Eagles to the position we desire? If the response is "yes" then he stays. If the response is "no" then he cannot remain. Its that simple!

It is not a matter of pretending but it is ridiculous to make such a claim. Okay, why are Akpeyi and Ezenwa still on the team given Rohr's obvious preference for players in Europe? Are those two Northerners as well? These selective claims are frankly ridiculous as if Shehu and Sanusi are not deserving. Even Musa is on the team given his long service same way Mikel, Mutiu Adepoju, and Yobo were treated towards the end of their careers with SE. Were they also Northerners?Tobi17 wrote:You're Nigerian... we can't pretend we don't know these things are happening to our dear sport.Enugu II wrote:VE,vancity eagle wrote:Something tells me they are forcing Rohr to play and include northerners.DIMKA76 wrote:I get the feeling Rohr doesn't even select the team. This idea that Northerners must always be denigrated is really crap, IMHO. Those players deserve their place on the team and they are not there simply because they are Northerners.
