NFF set for showdown with minister over move to ‘overhaul’ federation

Image

• ‘We’ve not received kobo from FG in six matches’
• Dare not at war with anybody, says aide

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) may be getting ready for a showdown with Sports Minister, Sunday Dare, following his declaration that he would overhaul the Super Eagles and also restructure the administrative architecture of the football body.

Since the Super Eagles squandered a 4-0 lead to draw 4-4 with the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone in Benin City, and later drew 0-0 in Freetown in their 2021 AFCON qualifying series, the minister has not hidden his disappointment with the team’s technical crew led by Gernot Rohr.

Dare lamented that the results of the games against Sierra Leone showed that Rohr cannot meet Nigerians’ aspirations, adding that he will look at the technical adviser and also the entire people involved in football administration in the country.

However, a top official of the NFF countered Dare’s claim yesterday, saying that the sports minister does not have the power to overhaul the football body.
“Does the sports minister have the power to overhaul the NFF? He doesn’t,” the NFF official declared in an interview with The Guardian yesterday. “If Sunday Dare wants to behave like his predecessor, Solomon Dalung, I wish him well. The position he is taking currently against the NFF and the Super Eagles is capable of denying Nigeria the ticket to the 2022 World Cup.”

The angry NFF official continues: “I know very well that the Presidency does not support Dare’s position against the NFF and the Super Eagles. The Presidency has always insisted that the ministers should not wage war against parastatals under them. Why will Dare see the NFF as an enemy, instead of looking for a way to support us to move Nigeria’s football forward?

“As we speak, the NFF has not received a kobo from the sports ministry for the six matches the Super Eagles played against Lesotho, Benin Republic, two friendly matches against Algeria and Tunisia in Austria, and the recent home and away fixtures against Sierra Leone. Dare is not interested in how the NFF gets money to execute matches. Is that the best way to administer sports? Nigeria is the only country in Africa that has not received a dime from its government in the 2021 AFCON qualifiers.”

Asked how the NFF got the funds to execute six games without support from the government, the official said: “FIFA has been very helpful to us in that regard. We also got some money from our sponsors. But we still need huge amount of money to settle some pending debts. Nigerians should tell the sports minister to refrain from his present stance against the NFF and the Super Eagles. He wants Rohr sacked for playing two draws against Sierra Leone. This is the same coach that led the Super Eagles to beat Argentina, Cameroun, drew with Brazil, and also won several matches. It will be wickedness on our part to sack him now.”

Contacted yesterday, the Special Adviser on Media to the Sports Minster, John Joshua-Akanji said Dare was not at war with anybody. He explained: “The NFF is a parastatal under the sports ministry, and it is too small for the minister to wage war against. Every Nigerian has interest in football, and when the team is not doing well, it is the duty of the sports minister to intervene. It is the sports minister who goes to the Presidency for funds, and it is normal for him to show concern.”

On alleged refusal by the ministry to provide money for the NFF in six matches, Joshua-Akanji said: “I don’t know anything concerning money. I think the Permanent Secretary is in the best position to speak on it.”

iworo,

I am happy that the NFF plans to fight back on this power grad. Dalung attempted it and failed. Dare is now attempting it, again. In my earlier reading, it appeared Amaju was bending over backwards to satisfy this Minister but that can lead to Minister feeling emboldened as he has so far.

Today, Minister got the NFF to agree to enforce the use of homebred players in the SE. In my view, while I support consideration of HB players in the SE, I feel it is not the Minister's place to force an edict on this. Amaju should resist such an edict.

Dare had attempted to face a non-renewal of Amaju's contract earlier because he (Dare) had some inside track in hiring some English coach in place of Rohr. The NFF, working with a sponsor, quickly moved to renew Rohr's contract which torpedoed the Minister's plan. The recent disappointment in the S/Leone games has now given Dare another opportunity to try to force his way. The big question is Buhari will never agree to meet the payoff on Rohr's contract nor will he support the FGH paying for a coach where the private sector previously handled this. It appears, the Minister is trying to flex powers to get the NFF to hire someone he designates and get the NFF to find a sponsor to pay for the new hire. This should be resisted.

If all this is true, the Minister seems to be plying the same or similar route as all those who are arguing to sack Rohr, sack Pinnick, ensure a 'quota' of home-base players in every squad and basically take us back to square one.

They say be careful what you wish for and for them maybe this should throw the whole debate into sharp perspective. I don't think any true lover of the SE can read this and be at all happy.

Dare should just stop the release of funds to NFF. That should solve the problem.

Let NFF also arrange for security for their events :)

So Dalung was not the fault after all.

It´s a good thing the NFF didn´t listen to some people on this thread.

Quote:
NFF meets minister, promises to fortify Super Eagles

• Dare charges federation to hold Rohr to higher standards
• ‘Rohr must scout for players in NPFL’

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has promised to fortify Super Eagles’ technical department to make it more effective. This, the federation, says it will do by engaging experts in different areas to help the coaches in building a formidable team.

The NFF and Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, have been under scrutiny since the senior national team threw away a 4-0 lead to draw 4-4 with Sierra Leone in an African Cup of Nations qualifier in Benin City.

Last week, Sports Minister, Sunday Dare, threatened to overhaul the Super Eagles’ technical department and the country’s football administrative structure to meet the aspirations of Nigerians.

This, perhaps, led to a meeting with the NFF, yesterday, where the minister charged the federation to hold Super Eagles manager, Gernot Rohr, to higher standards.

Speaking at a meeting, which reviewed the technical report of the Nigeria/Sierra Leone AFCON qualifiers and other matters, NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, assured the minister that the federation would not shirk in its responsibilities, promising that changes and adjustments as discussed and suggested by the ministry would be put into motion.

He listed some of the changes to include a Super Eagles’ administrative structure that will include a physical trainer, nutritionist, a psychologist and two match readers or more, injection of three to four home-based players into the Super Eagles picked from the professional league, as well as compelling the technical adviser to watch weekly Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) games to scout for players and also evolve a scientific template to benchmark the performance of the technical adviser and the team.

Earlier, Dare had told the NFF that it must hold Rohr to the higher standards contained his contract, saying, “the recent dismal performance of the Super Eagles in their qualifiers against Sierra Leone has raised a few concerns and brought to fore the need to do a quick critique.”

He added that “the government, while concerned about the dismal performance and non discernible pattern of play and team harmony in the Super Eagles, is looking beyond the outcome of the Nigeria versus Sierra Leone matches and AFCON. We are looking at the present and future administration of football that speaks to the development of the front room and backroom.

“The NFF must tightly hold the technical adviser to the KPIs in his contract. Thus, we cannot wait for those conditions to come to life, before we tighten the screws or demand a higher or better performance, better technical depth, better player mix and team harmony and a functional national team, else Nigeria and football lovers in Nigeria will be the greatest losers.

“In this area, NFF must take necessary steps and actions beyond Rohr to protect our football fortunes.”

He promised that the sports ministry would work to support the NFF, while also demanding for answers and changes too on behalf of Nigerians.

Nigeria must be the most backwards country on earth.

What country mandates home-based players ?

The same NPFL that cannot even qualify Nigeria for CHAN.

National teams are for the best players PERIOD, not some quota system. These fools have not learned from the recent past.

Even France, that has the 5th best league in the world does not do such a thing.

Nigeria will self sabotage to try to prove a point. Bloody idiots.

If these fools were smart and honest they will mandate that Rohr chooses at least 6 midfield players in each squad, not home-based players.

Kpom! This is what happens when you take random mugus and put them in administrative positions. Dare was a sports journalist, I guess he thinks it gives him knowledge of how SE should play ahead of the nff or the coach.instead of worrying about getting sports back to schools and universities he's concerned about SE tactics. Brainless angel* will get us banned too.

Another intellectually bereft sports minister trying to superimpose his retarded ideas on the NFF.
When are we going to be rid of these types of people, for goodness sake?

He was okay with his photo op - training with the SE, not only sucking up valuable training time the team could have had, but bringing an air of unprofessionalism to a serious AFCON qualifying game.
Yet when the results weren't what 'he' wanted, he had the audacity to open his mouth and chastise the team. Of course, he wasn't intelligent enough to realize he was a major root cause of the poor result!

It's high time the NFF was a stand alone organization. That way, it can source for funds (as is the current case) and not be beholden to clowns disguised as 'Sports Ministers'. The question I have is what are the credentials of this imbecile anyway and what qualifies him to be in charge of sports in Nigeria? What happened to the NSC - Nigeria Sports Commission?
Enough Already!!
