Tobi17 wrote:Owngoal just confirmed Rohr is looking to make Awoniyi an alternative to Osimhen, so far none of the other strikers have shown they can step to that alternative #9 role behind Osimhen... Onuachu is definitely not it and Nacho isn't a natural #9 (play him behind the striker). I actually see Nacho and Awoniyi actually striking a solid partnership like they did in their U17 years, simply rest Osimhen for the less important games then play Awoniyi upfront with Nacho playing the role Firmino plays at Liverpool. Then add the attacking force of Lookman/Iwobi on the wings, then Ejaria as the CAM, Chukwueze/Samuel Kalu/Ejuke on the other side, Ndidi sitting back to do what he does best - protecting the back 4 like the boss that he is... then Aribo or Etebo playing the box-2-box mid role.

Defence- I'll fancy Adarabioyo or Akpoguma and Balogun as the CB's, Sanusi and Aina will have to slug it out at the LB position cause both have been in good form at their clubs. Ebuehi will always start for me in that RB position with Awaziem as a solid option.

GK- nothing much to see here, right now Maduka is the Numero Uno already.
Aina plays as RB for Fulham

They have summarily dismissed Onuachu because they don't like his style of the league he plays in. The fact that he has 3 times as many goals as the anyone else doesn't matter. He's a basketball player to them.
So they now call for Awoniyi.
I watched the U23 and they failed to qualify in Asaba for the 2020 Olympics because Awoniyi could not score goals; he missed the chances created for him to score goals..

Even the team B will pretty much compete brilliantly against some of the top to decent teams in Europe if well coached... I like Rohr, but it's clear he doesn't even know how to use the richness of depth he has right now.

How many goals has the basketballer scored in the Champions league or in the European cup or against strong opposition? because we all know league form in certain leagues is very defective e.g Joseph Akpala, Henry Onyekuru ,Uchebo , Brown Ideye & Nwofor, all considered none scoring Strikers in the GWG. How many goals has the basketballer scored in GWG to suggest he deserves his place having played in a Nations cup and several friendlies and nation cup qualifiers. At what point do we say enough is enough he is simply not good enough????

None of those goals scored by Ugbo were scored from outside the box. That is alarming.

A bit of a history lesson...

Between 2003 - 2005, a young man named Tosin Dosunmu scored 16 goals for KVC Westerlo and scored 18 goals for Germinal Beershot in the same Jupilar league, which Onuachu currently plays in.

Tosin Dosunmu won the Jupilar League top scorer award with Beershot and was third on the Jupilar scoring chart while at KVC Westerlo. On June 5th, 2004, he was invited for and won his first cap during Nigeria's WCQ match against Rwanda. He underwhelmed in that game and never got a follow on invite - in spite of being the highest Nigerian striker in Europe at the time. He played only ONCE for the SE - never given another chance to redeem himself.

Yet, in spite of the fact that Onuachu scored in his first game for Nigeria, he has subsequently under whelmed in his 9 follow on appearances since his debut. We continue to hear all manner of excuses for this young lad by his teaming fans, who conveniently discountenance the fact that the guy CANNOT hack it at the SE level and has demonstrated this repeatedly.

Onuachu is obviously important to KRC Genk, with the goals he has scored. He is NOT important to the SE - he was 4th in line in the SE strike force, behind Osimhen, Iheanacho and Musa. Yet, all the times he was fortunate enough to have come in as a sub, he has sucked. Ditto that for when he started. Going back to the Egypt game in which he scored in the first minute with the long range shot, he pretty much sucked for the remaining 87 mins in which he played before being subbed by Ighalo.

Let's be real here. His style of play does not map into what the SE need right now. This is not the first time that a decent club performer would struggle at the National team level. I mentioned Tosin Dosunmu earlier. Jonathan Akpoborie of VfB Stuttgart was another example. So also was Jonathan Obiku of Feyernood.

We wish Onuachu all the very best at KRC Genk, but Nigeria needs to move on without him

False equivalence! Oliseh,Amokachi,Keshi, Ndidi, Samuel Kalu, Simon Moses, Osihmen and many more of our best players started in Belgium. Most of them were good then but were not world beaters while in Belgium. The fact that SE does not have the players to play a style that would best utilize Onuachu's skills does not equate to him being a poor striker.

All the other players you listed successfully adapted their game to the needs of the SE, thereby elevating their importance to the team.
As alluded in my comments (see highlighted), as a striker, Onuachu obviously has been important for KRC Genk, but the hard truth is that he has been a huge bust for the SE.

All of those players have moved on to better leagues and done the business there. Those players have also all done well in GWG.

Belgium should not be a disqyalifier nor should it be a qualifier to get somebody into SE.

Onyekuru tore up the same league yet can't hack it in France, and has to continue to go back to Turkey. He also underwhelmed in SE.

If people cannot step up a level or replicate their Jupiler league form for SE, then they are surplus to requirements whether they score 100 goals in Belgium or not.

Im getting sick and tired of hearing about Onuachu.

Dessers, Sadiq Umar, Josh Maja, Terre Moffi, Awoniyi, all have not been given a fair chance and the basketball player continues to stink up the joint.

Otitokoro,

The problem here, though, is you seem to think the player is the problem. Have you considered the possibility that the coach may well be the problem?

Why keep inviting this player and then fail to design the very plays that have made him successful at his club? What is the point?

The Manager, Gernot Rohr, stated clearly that the SE will not change its style for a player. If that is the case, so why keep inviting Paul? In my view, this is the failure of the manager and not the player.

We have had a player like Onuachu in the past. His name was Victor Agali. Clumsy as they come with the ball at his feet but he excelled in the air. Guess what? Shuaibu Amodu made a successful use of this player by designing plays for him.

Why can't Rohr do the same. Is it beyond him?

He is a professional player. He should be able to adapt to different styles of play and coaching. Will he quit football if his current coach is fired? Do Nigeria design plays similar to the ones Osimhen and Nacho play for their clubs? Onuachu needs to step up if he wants to be a permanent player for Nigeria. The boy has sucked so far!

There are a few problems with this comparison. To me I think you just want to take a cheap shot at the coach and not acknowledge that Onuachu simply isn't good enough, although the coach has to take the blame if he continues to invite him and he does not produce as there are a plethora of options Rohr can utilize.

First off Agali was playing for Schalke in the Bundesliga, so already he has a much higher profile than Onuachu.

Second Agali never ever had a succesful SE career. He played a grand total of 12 games. Now he did score 5 goals which is a very good conversion rate, but you have to ask, if he was so good as his scoring rate would seem to indicate, why is it that he only played 12 games, why is it that he doesn't have any goals scored in a tournament. He went to both ANC 2002 and 2004, and he barely played at all. I remember that era well, and I remember that I and plenty of others were not too fond of Agali.
