Rohr Expresses Concern Over Performance Of Super Eagles Defenders Ahead AFCON Qualifiers
Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr has revealed that he’s worried about the performance of Nigerian defenders in Europe ahead of the team’s crucial 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Benin and Lesotho.
Nigeria is top of Group L on eight points from four games and will face the Squirrels of Benin on March 22 before facing the Crocodile of Lesotho on March 30.
Rohr, who is expected to release the names of players for the two games, told Sun News that he’s delighted with the performance of Super Eagles strikers in Europe recently and wishes to have as many top defenders.
“I’m happy my strikers are doing well and scoring goals,” the former Bordeaux manager told the Sun News.
“Taiwo Awoniyi is scoring, same as Paul Onuachu, Josh Maja, Terem Moffi, and Henry Onyekuru. We also have Victor Osimhen and Kelechi Iheanacho. These players are doing well in their various teams and it’s positive signal for the Super Eagles.
“We’ve too many strikers doing well and scoring in Europe, but very few defenders doing well.”

The difficulties of statistical thinking describes a puzzling limitation of our mind: our excessive confidence in what we believe we know, and our apparent inability to acknowledge the full extent of our ignorance and the uncertainty of the world we live in. We are prone to overestimate how much we understand about the world and to underestimate the role of chance in events -- Daniel Kahneman (2011), Winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics

Yep, that's where he needs to be doing more scouting...we saw the huge drop off with Etebo and Ndidi out...Sunset wrote:Not a single mention of our midfielders, sha its not surprising...

Our defenders are not doing anything special and many here have been saying it for a while.fledy wrote:Does this know what he talking about??

Personally, I will give a passmark to Aina and Sanussi, but our central defenders haven't filled me with any degree of excitement from their club performances recently.
Balogun: Supposedly our "best" CD is in and out of a poorly performing Celtic team in the Scottish Premiership.
Ajayi: A regular in rock-bottom WBA's central defence but IMHO is inconsistent, not commanding and often anonymous. To crown it all was red-carded last Saturday for a clumsy handling of the ball as he was about to be beaten.
Ekong: Dropped from Serie A's Udinense down to the English Championship @ Watford, he hasn't necessarily set the place alight or caught any positive headlines. I haven't been watching him tbh, but I haven't been hearing him either.
Omeruo: Same as Ekong down in La Liga 2. Kudos to him for scoring last weekend but he was standing in the right place at the right time in a goalmouth scramble in the 95th minute. Otherwise, Omeruo hasn't caught anyone's attention of recent.
Others:
Ebuehi: On his way back but nowhere near what he used to be - yet. Scored a similar goal to Omeruo's last weekend and that's about it.
Collins: MIA. At best, is 'just OK' at Paderborn in Bundesliga 2 where he has just renewed his contract. Rumours of him being snapped up from his relegation-bound team by a bigger club at the end of last season turned out to be unfounded.
Ozonwafor: Still trying to establish himself as a CD at Galatasaray and is mostly warming the bench.
So, it might sound a bit harsh but my conclusion is that on the whole, the majority of our defenders do not seem to be on an upward trajectory, unlike our strikers. Some are static and others are more like regressing IMHO.
We need top-flight, top-performing defenders to have any chance of impacting the World Cup meaningfully. All this first-round, second-round 'show face' nonsense is no longer good enough.

I think you need to check which club Balogun plays for, I think you will discover it is not Celtic and he only needs seven more points to be a league champion.Damunk wrote:Our defenders are not doing anything special and many here have been saying it for a while.fledy wrote:Does this know what he talking about??

I always thought he signed for Celtic and the times I've checked for him in their line up, I've not seen him - for obvious reasons.
Is he making the Rangers line up regularly? I don't know but maybe that's cos I've been looking for him in the wrong place.
So aside from the club mix-up, are you saying he is a regular in the Rangers line-up, like Joe Aribo?
Just asking.
By the way, my post wasn't only about Balogun, so keep it in context before you needlessly ascribe ill-intent to a genuine mistake. I'm not sure why you're suddenly going OTT over a minor error on just one player when I spoke about 9 of them...
But this is CE, the home of one-upmanship.

You've even indicated you misspoke, but you go on to ask if he is a club regular. You still do not know his numbers this season and you are still boasting in this thread . Everything you wrote about the defenders were all lies . You are a horrible individual

Guys, Haba! Give uncle Damunkey a break. Since when did we start watching a game before analyzing it on CE talkless knowing which club our players play in?
Damunkey, Damunkey, please ignore them. Cetics or Rangers, same difference, abi?

1st and 2nd in an eternal two-horse Glasgow race for the Scottish Premiership title with no other team winning the top division in over 35 years. That must be a world record.
So yeah, I wouldn't get too excited about either team, or the difference - that's assuming you're referring to Celtic, and not some American wannabe 'soccer' team self-identifying as 'Celtics'.

We will follow your advice and go under the bridge. It's cheaper.
If Eko bridge no work, we go try Onitsha bridge.
Nigeria needs your help. Tell us when you are next in Lagos so you can take us there.
We can fly to Asaba and hop over the river to Onitsha if Lagos no work.
